Growing Hair Long With Braidouts

Great thread Isis I was about to ask about doing braidouts in the summer, but that question was answered by Slyver2, so I think I will be doing this throughtout the summertime. Although I have one question how does the heat effect the hair being out, because it gets hot in Califoria.

I also notice that you guys are doing braidout after you wash. How do you keep your hair from tangling while braiding? Because I tried this wet and me no likey, it was tangling along the way.
Thank you Cocowhite! I do my braidouts after my hair has airdried ( in a rollerset). My hair does not tangle at all while braiding. I've never tried it wet.:)

anybody still rockin' braidouts? I think I'm gonna have to bring this style back for the spring/summer once the weather warms up some.

I wore braidouts for the entire 2 years of my transition to natural. I would wash and deep condition once a week. I used Herbal Essences Replenishing conditioner on each section before braiding it up. The key is to do small sections and use a k-cutter to get the tangles out and a denman brush to get the section nice and smooth before braiding.

I still wear braidouts, probably always will. :)

Braidouts are my signature style now that Im transitioning. I am seven months post today and my hair is thriving like it has never before. I hope I can just continue and do this until I trim the last bit of relaxer. I trying to incorporate the baggy method. It worked out well today.

I've been doing twistouts rather than braidouts...twistouts are quicker and easier to do for me.

My hair has really grown since last year when I posted in this thread, but I haven't been consistent. Back in March of last year, I had a 4-5 inch TWA... now my hair is nearing armpit length when stretched. During that year, I had about 2-3 trims.

Just last week, I was doing twistouts with 10 fat twists in my dry moisturized hair at night. Then I would wake up in the morning, unravel, and fluff into shape like the picture in my avatar. Right now, I'm wearing a more defined twistout from several medium-sized twists I put in my hair last night (sorry Nonie, I couldn't stick with keeping twists in my hair any longer).

I just wish I could be consistent. I think what throws me off is how to style my hair after washing it to achieve the same twistout look. My hair feels and acts different after it's been washed. When I airdry in fat twists and then unravel and fluff, it looks a mess. I hope I can figure out a way to airdry my hair so I can achieve the same softness and shape of a twistout done on dry hair that hasn't been washed. :)

I just tried my first braidout about two weeks ago. i only took a couple of pics, and i have to post them, but I thought it came out really cute, and I got alot of compliments. It's definitely become one of my signature styles.

Wow, your hair is so beautiful Poohbear and is getting long so quickly!! With trims too! You're doing an excellent job!

So twistouts can be really defined after just one night? I haven't done one because I didn't think the twist would be defined if I just kept them in for one night. Are you ladies getting defined twist after one evening of wearing flat twist? :look:

I usually do my twists or braids over night. The trick for me to get them nicely defnied so that by the end of the day they don't fall, is to lightly wet my hair. Sometimes I do this with a leave in spray, and alittle castor oil, and sometimes just wetting my hands and running them through my hair. It makes the twist or braidout pop. I also like doing this on dry hair to get a little more fullness, and in the morning I coat my hand with some hair milk while I fluff, but I like my hair big these days, so that step is optional.

I just started doing braidouts last week and I got a really nice compliment. I love braidouts. I believe I just need to perfect my technique.

After reading through this thread, I've been wearing braidouts for the past two weeks. I've even find myself wearing my braids (I just do two pig tails) when I'm out and about. It's a very low maintenance style....I love that!:D

Glad I saw this thread! I'm sick of wearing buns/updos ALL the time so it's good to know you ladies have been having success with braidouts. I think I may alternate wearing braidouts one week with bunning and see how my hair reacts.

Thank you ladies for all your input. This is a great thread with a lot of useful tips. Bumping for others who are interested in doing twistouts and braidouts and need those extra tips to seal the deal. I'll be attempting my first twistout with my next wash...wish me luck!

I have been doing this all summer and didn't know it was once a challenge. I am having very good results. today I am in small twists I put in last night on lightly damp hair and used the Hairveda whipped jelly for setting.

I was surpirised at how full and thick my twists are now compared to previous years. I usually do medium or large twists and now my hair is the length of the very first set of extension twists I ever had in my hair. :)

I think I want to contiue doing this until at least October or November going back and forth between braids and twists.

Gotta figure out a cowash routine with these tiny twists though to try and keep them in for at least a week or two. Not sure if that will happen since my hair likes to dread up with a quickness, but maybe if I add more oil in my spritz it will keep them from dreading.

Ahh the joys of experimentation.

I do braidouts all the time, but I just started using rollers on the end. In fact, I'm on day two right now, and I slept without a scarf... still looks good. I might do a twist out next time, though, this thread has been inspirational. :)

Meeee... i always go back to braidouts and my hair responds to them esp. since I am almost totally natural. I have 4 ab/3c hair and i like to keep it stretched. Its just alot easier for me to handle and it retains pretty well like this.hth

what is a braid out? how is it done. Is it braiding your hair overnight and then undoing it to get that wavy crinkly look? I dont know just guessing...

oh! yay me!!! but how how can this help with growth? let me in!!

It doesn't necessarily help with growth, but it definitely helps with retention. It's a no-heat, low-manipulation style that helps your hair stay moisturized and happy.

I've been away from braidouts for a while now. I think I'm going back to them SOON! A lady asked me the other day, how did I get my hair to grow so long. I told her half-wigs, crochet braids and braidouts. Now that my ends are clipped, my hair should hang at the nape of my neck, instead of falling below my shoulders.

I just wanted to bump this thread to see if anyone is still reaping the benefits of growth w/ braidouts.
