I was showing my friend this site. She admired everyone's long hair and said she would join. I showed her a couple of threads and in one thread she made a face and started laughing. (the black girls secret to long hair thread)
Me: What?
Her: You don't really believe this do you??
Me:You can tell it's her hair!
Her: No not that. But c'mon! Vaseline?! 90% of black girls would have long hair, if that was the case!!! You know good and well if there was a product out there that grew hair LONG, that broad would keep it to herself!!!

We discussed it some more and I started thinking. Real hard. You know how someone tells you a product grew their hair and you try it, but It does NOTHING for your hair??
I trust LHCF though. I have gained soooo much valuable information. My hair is in the best condition ever!!
It did make me wonder though. Reminded me of when I saw a girl in senior yr of HS. At the end of Junior year, her hair was neck length and very damaged. Beg. of senior yr, her hair is almost to her butt and soooo shiny! I asked her what she put in her hair; she smiled, said nothing, she just washes and conditions and she uses African Pride grease. Yeah okay Chick! :lachen:

BTW this is a nice thread okay!! I'm not intending to start no e-drama kay??

Not really... it doesn't make sense to me.

I mean, there may be a small amount of people (NUTBALLS) who would do such a thing...

but what reason would a sane woman with long hair decide to come online, pay a fee, take pictures of their hair, talk about hair all the time, devote A LOT of time to it... just to lie about what she does to her hair?

That would be a very weird, unbalanced person who would go through ALL THAT just to recommend that people use bad products

Yes folks lie. And what works for one doesnt work for another. Some folks are just stingy with information PERIOD. That's just folk.

But you couldve used that African Pride grease and got the same results OR your hair could've all but fell out. You don't know til u try.

It definitely depends on the person..
I remember one time my hair looking great, shiny, soft, bouncy curls. The lunch lady asked my what did I use on my hair..I paused a bit because I was embarressed and told her I used Super Gro grease..I felt embarressed because that was it. I had no awesome hair care tip, I didn't know what else to use but grease. i felt bad because I didn't have a better answer or hair care secret.
That's why it is important to be careful of the advice you take..some people really don't need as much to retain length or/and know nothing about hair care. the advice they give you could be total crap, like with me and the grease. grease was my life!

I think very good basic hair care is generally discussed. Every now and again a JustKiya will come along and share something OUTSTANDING. For the most part, I feel that everythng is discussed here but the "How's" and the "When's" of how to best use certain products are vague.

I just run everything by my lil sis SamathaJones. She has always given me on point advice.

Oh and I use vaseline.

Some ladies maybe keep stuff to themselves but I think for the most part members are willing to share.
All my inspirations have very detailed fotki's and are more then willing to share their reggie.s and pictures during their different stages of growing out.
I think the biggest secret on LHCF is called patience

I LOVE THAT!!!!!

Shoot I do too!!! Did you see my thread I made the other day?? :drunk:

i get what you're saying. I also know that when i was younger me and my sisters would have like this competition to see who's hair could get the longest. WOW! how immature we were haha we'd keep little secrets as to what we were doing to our hair it was just so silly. I think this board has very mature women and i doubt that they'd be in that kind of mind state. I remember my mom use to use nothing but grease, pink oil moisturizer on my hair and i never had any problems with my hair...lol it'd be so greasy but it was healthy.

Some women do, but I have my own regimen so I don't worry about it nor do I ask them what products they use. :superbanana:

It's funny to me that people will always assume you used something "magical" to grow your hair. You tell them and they are like...huh?...there's nothing special about that! Just like some of you have described. A huge part of the process is what you are doing to your hair. It amazes me how that gets overlooked in favor of a product. What you do and what you use must complement each other to guarantee success, and even those two crucial elements have to then be formulated to your specific hair type/structure. A person could have very well grown hair to their butt with vaseline cause their hair just happened to like it, but they also could have stopped coloring, stopped using direct heat, started washing more frequently, started DC'ing, stopped sleeping with nothing covering their head, started wearing protective styles, stopped cutting often or even got more frequent needed trims, learned how to balance protein/moisture, stopped relaxing so often, switched to a better relaxer, transitioned to natural, massaged the scalp, found a better way to detangle without so much breakage, found a way to wash the hair without tangling it so much, take vitamins, change diet, exercise, etc. I find the question asked is usually what do you use on your hair. I think the products I use now are fantastic, but if I had continued the same hair practices from 2.5 years ago with the same products I use now, I'd probably be near bald and blaming it on my DNA. As much as some people really want to believe there is some secret underlying LHCF magic formula that only some people are privy to, it just isn't so. Patience, persistence, and sacrifice...you gotta stop complaining about what you refuse to do....like stopping the heat and protective styling...and just do it to get where you want to be. And you can't do everything everyone else does....I can't stretch beyond 10 weeks, I can't go 6 months without trimming, I can't use the 50 bazillon products that are hyped on a daily basis cause my hair is just too fragile. You can ask every tailbone-haired girl you see what she uses on her hair, but until you dig down deep and sacrifice some of your daily cuteness with some grandma buns to achieve some long-term gain, you may not ever see your true potential. I guess what I'm trying to say is, you can ask what someone is doing to grow their hair, but if you are asking someone in passing what they did to grow long hair, and you understand there is really no magic formula, how likely is it that they are going to give you the key to growing YOUR hair long and healthy???? You can only find that here in a forum like this, with knowledge, common sense, patience, persistence, through trial and error, through tears and finally triumph. Oops! Did I get OT, do I sound like somebody's momma now? Whatever....y'all know I love my LHCF sistas!

OP, I understand what you're saying......crazy as it is, I share my hair life on my Fotki with any LHCF or Fotkin that cares to look, but at work, or in person I am way more reserved. I've had coworkers ask how I take care of my hair, but depending upon the initial comments I get, I wont say much more. For me it depends upon my audience, even though there are tons of folks here and on diff sites, still the misconception about proper black hair care continues.

I think in LHCF world everyone is completely up front and honest about everything they do to their hair....not just their products but their whole regimen.
However, IRL, I know there are some sheisty women that think they're "special" because they have long hair and don't really want anyone else to have it. But even if that's the case, whatever they do to their hair may or may not work on yours, so it doesn't really matter anyway.

I completely agree ladies! I'm actually making my friend your responses. :lachen:I want her to see LHCF the same way I see it...as a "sisterhood"; a lace where we come together to strive for great lengths while sharing practices! :yep:

thats about all i was gonna say. she may have been doing that but failed to say she was washing it every day and keeping it in a wet bun. but to answer your questions...i think SOME people lie but not about everything. i mean they might be on a bandwagon and fake some results so they can be the talk of LHCF but i dont think most people up here would do that. everyone that i have asked for advice has been up front and honest. doesnt mean i can do everything they do but at least they tell me.

PREACH!!! ITA with everything you said, especially the bold.

I believe that even on LHCF some people hold back good info and/or lie because that's just folks, as someone else posted and in every community of human beings, especially virtual communities without any consequences for bad behavior, people will exaggerate, lie, hold back, whatever, because they can get away it. This is just my humble opinion . . .

I filter the information here just as I do IRL

:yep:agree with everything except this. i refuse to do the grandma buns. i rather shag it out:lachen:

I think the biggest secret on LHCF is called patience

I def. agree about the patience part!

Anyways, I don't think people really lie per se, they may not think that saying they drink 50 gazillion bottles of water a day, eat only salmon and dark greens, work out 3 times a week, practice low manipulation, etc. are necessary to share. So many diff. things contribute to hair growth so it may be hard to pinpoint everything you do that makes your hair grow long and shiny.

I think sometimes people really don't know the answer either. I remember (pre LHCF) I started retaining length on my relaxed hair and I was almost at armpit length and suddenly everyone kept asking me what I was doing to my hair. I did not know what to say because I was not doing anything different (I thought then). Upon reflection I think maybe I was not trimming 1/2" off my hair every month and hence I retained length - duh! I then started going to a new scissor happy hairdresser that was giving me a new hairstyle everytime i visitied her until my hair was ear length in 3 months.

I agree with most of this post. I learned that I had to sacrifice 'cuteness' for PS and I got mad growth from doing just that. I can't have my hair flat ironed daily/weekly and see growth. To me, that is the magic formula. Trial and error, protective styles daily and being patient....

I think that most of girls don't tell lie or hide their "secrets" but the real thing is that when you tell people your regimen and when they see the results most of people don't believe... because they think it's too simple .....

Dang, was the "1 star" really necessary?:perplexed

Bump 'em girl, bump 'em.

I agree w/Lavendar's post 100%. By the way, my buns are cute thank you very much:grin:! Anyhoo, I don't have a problem sharing any info when asked. Now IRL, it really depends on the person. I don't usually give a whole bunch of details but it's not out of malice, it's because I simply don't feel like it! I tell most about cowashing, little to no heat, EVCO, etc. I'll put it like this, if I see you have a genuine interest and desire to know what I do to improve your hair, I don't have a problem sharing. If you're just trying to figure out if I have any business w/hair or you think you already know what I do, that's another story.

I totally agree...I've noticed that there are folks here that are vague and stingy with info...you ask them specific questions about things that they post and either they "don't remember" or they don't answer...ummm ok...I don't know if they feel the whole board is going to run out and buy up all of "their miracle item" or what ,or they don't want anyone looking like them ....then there are ladies here who are wonderful about sharing information. I mean I can understand holding back info from folks outside of the board b/c of some of the negativity and skepticism that one can get from someone who just doesn't get it...but on here? come on now...:look:

I've never thought people withhold info, unless y'all are talking things like where to find the last remaining bottles of Surge. And hey, if that's a staple and they're flying off shelves then I can't be mad at them for taking care of #1. Otherwise I have never imagined anyone would lie about their regimen or the secret to their success. I do take the two-inch growth a month testimonies w/ a pinch of salt :look: but otherwise methinks most of what's shared here is true.

I do see the "don't remember" thing sometimes and I'm just like, ok. On the flip, there are some days I really don't remember what I used, especially if I've been playing mixtress or if it's a day or two after the fact (which can cause temporary dementia in a PJ), but that's why I started keeping a journal:grin: This could be the case for many of us, I'm sure.

Exactly!!!

Exactly what she said.

I think everyone is open and upfront here but i think people do tend to hold back IRL.

For example, there is this little girl at my sons's school w/ really thick pretty BSL 4a, 4b hair. While getting ready for the spring concert her mom pull out this mystery jar and starts putting this product on he daughters hair. This was a plain white jar, no label, writing or anything. So I'm like Whats that it smells really good. She didnt answer so I asked a little louder and she pretended not to hear me. Guess she wanted to keep the secret to her self.
