Essence.com-Unlocks the Secret to Growing Healthy Hair

It was an okay article. I like alot of what he has to say..must of it is dead on. Its nice that he is an advocate of natural and relaxed hair. I dont agree with him on the following: heat not being the enemy even on damaged hair- whateva! and the part about trimming every 8 weeks.

I wish he was near me.......I just love men in my hair!

It was informative...but it relied too much on that stylist turning these women's hair around. I think that black women (like we have) can turn our own hair around without waiting for expensive stylists to open their books up to new clients....

He has some good info on there but the other 20 something pages are "his clients" tooting his horn and basically advertising his services lol....

We can have long thriving hair without a Primary Care Hair stylist lmao, he makes it seem like health insurance will cover your salon visits!

Pretty good article. He is a stylist, so I expect him to push staying under one on a weekly/biweekly basis.

The main thing I didn't agree with is seeing $200 for some hair serum...that ain't never happening!!

He had me til he started talking about trimming at every relaxer. I didn't really care for the advertisement feel of it either. "If you want long healthy hair, come to me!" A lot of what he said was just common sense. Essence didn't unlock anything for me but I'm sure the article helped someone. I learned all that plus more right from this sight.

I kinda agree with the relaxers being done by professions story.

My previous stylist relaxed me bone straight. Now because I have thick hair, it wasnt paper thin but it wasnt the thickness I have now. Once I started relaxeing myself again but this time with more knowledge about prepping and applying, I have thickness and some texture again. I am trying to get rid of these bone straight ends I have. I will, slowly but surely.

Two Words - JOB SECURITY, however, even though some of his information is "obvious" there are a lot women who are not privy to "our hair society forum" and I was glad that he was not solely advertising "Ted Gibson products" and provided some products options to those of us who are "financially challenged" - I don't think people want to chose between their car note and 200.00 serum.

Couldn't thank you enough. I relied on stylists for YEARS and my hair hasn't progressed at all:nono:

This year I'm taking my hair into my on hands.

Daephae, your hair is looking very pretty:yep:

Right.

He kept saying look to a "professional" - But we have all done that before.. Hence why we are here.

Frankly - I have seen hair on this board grow longer in 6 months than what some of his clients claim.

OH well, better than nothing.
I thought his product reccomendations were not so hot.
Ted Gibson Oil....200 bucks? Hair Sheets????:nono:What are those?
Please.

I agree with this too - the problem for me was that - there was no professionalism with the stylists I had. Overlapping, overuse of heat, etc....killed my hair...

Haa.. my car note is 150.00:lachen: I am sure it is one of the oils in my cabinet, and eo's.... 200 bucks! no way.

LOL!!! Some good advice...but tooooo much stylist reliance...he just wants to make that $$$.....ha ha

I know 2 women at church who NEVER miss a hair appointment. Their hair looks EXACTLY the same- after 15 years:ohwell:

What exactly did it say about professionally relaxing?

I couldnt see the whole thing cause my pc is slow.

I know for SURE, I aint NEVA letting a stylist relax my hair again.:nono: I have bald spots, I'm trying to grow back. because of stylists. I started relaxing my hair myself. I cant pay people to damage my hair:nono:

Overall good article, I agree with everything he said about have a good relationship with you stylist. I can't count how many times I have been to the salon and asked for a trimmed and walked out with a hair cut. I disagree with some of his product choices, only because I have tried the Pantene Relaxed and Natural line and it made my hair fill like straw. If I could find a stylist like this in my area I would still go to a salon if all their clients looked like that

I was surprised at some of the products they recommended. Dr. Miracles?! Pantene?! I use to use the whole Pantene R&N line religiously before coming here for years and IMHO that stuff is complete garbage:perplexed

I got the Essence.com e-mail this AM and read it and I think the secret was unlocked for me when I paid my $5 to become a LHCF member.

Yeah, I was mindlessly using that Pantene line for a while during that year when my hair only saw 2 inches of growth. :nono:

Am I the only one who noticed the NAOMI CAMPBELL is one of his clients. Have you seen her hair :nono: :nono:

That's all I needed to see

I think he made some good points that most women don't know.

I get my haired trimmed every relaxer. I get a relaxer every 10-12 weeks. To me a true trim is no more than 1/8 of an inch removed. That is exactly what my stylist does. We have had serious converstions about that. I personaly do not feel like it has hindered my growth.

Second I agree with having a relationship with your stylist. I go to my stylist for relaxers only. She knows my hair goals and she knows what I expect of her. I did a thourough search for an hair care individual not just a hair stylist. During our consultation she really impressed me. Believe me I quized her based on the information I got from here.

The advertising was obvious but I can't blame a person for trying to make a living.

ETA: I am considering changing my trims to every other relaxer. Just want to see if I see a difference.

I did NOT notice that! Have you guys seen her hairline lately? I'm sure she's asking the same question...she hasn't seen it anywhere! If he's so great, he should have told her about those lacefronts a long time ago.

(DISCLAIMER...of course if applied correctly, this could be avoided)

with clients like naomi campbell --- who doesnt have a hairline, i dont think so. thanks for article, it was informative but he will never be my stylist.
