Essence.com-Unlocks the Secret to Growing Healthy Hair

yeah, I agreed with lots of what he said, and noticed he used lots of the products that we like here :) but at the same time, I think if you have someone you trust do your relaxer, and you know their work (my mom has been doing mine for 22 years) and you tell them what you want, and they do what you want, then all is well. I also know many ladies who self relax and do well.

Also regarding box perms/perms w/ no lye

I've used no lye all my life except my 4 month rendesvous with a hairdresser. My hair has never been shorter than shoulder length. Though no lye is drying, it is better for my scalp!!

Overall good article, I agree with everything he said about have a good relationship with you stylist. I can't count how many times I have been to the salon and asked for a trimmed and walked out with a hair cut. I disagree with some of his product choices, only because I have tried the Pantene Relaxed and Natural line and it made my hair fill like straw. If I could find a stylist like this in my area I would still go to a salon if all their clients looked like that

I was going to say the same thing. I didn't agree with a lot of his product selections. Some of the products like the Dr. Miracles, Relaxed and Natural Moisturizer and Doo Gro oil. :nono:

Ok article. He relies too much on your relationsip with stylists to turn your hair around. We need to be empowered to do this ourselves.

I  Essence mag so I really enjoyed this article. I didn't care for all the advertising of Ted Gibson products:rolleyes: but I can't wait to read Part 2:yep:

He said it should be done by professions to avoid overlapping and damage. If the person knows what they are doing then sure. But more often then not, they dont. They overlap, dont prep well enough, leave it on too long, straighten too much, etc etc. I will never get a relaxer at a salon because they will overprocess my hair, I know it, by trying to get rid of my texture.

What exactly did it say about professionally relaxing?

I couldnt see the whole thing cause my pc is slow.

I know for SURE, I aint NEVA letting a stylist relax my hair again.:nono: I have bald spots, I'm trying to grow back. because of stylists. I started relaxing my hair myself. I cant pay people to damage my hair:nono:

Am I the only one who noticed the NAOMI CAMPBELL is one of his clients. Have you seen her hair :nono: :nono:

That's all I needed to see

:lachen: I fell out on that one. I should email him and tell him the secret to bringing back the hair line is dab some aloe vera on it and "seal" that with castor oil, but maybe that's too po' folk like or something. I agree with everyone who says LHCF was the key that unlocked the secret, it did for me!

I think this article is for someone that doesnt want to handle their hair without depending on a stylist. I must add if this was a few months ago I would have been all over it! Thanks to LHCF I dont need it!

Daephae - your hair is soooo pretty - I love your pictures!!!!

This is so off the subject but Daephae I'm going to get a professional press on Thursday as I officially become a straight haired natural & I know I'm going to need a shape up to get a nice style to move forward with - I must admit I stole your siggy pic to show to the stylist in case she's not understanding my description. I love the way your hair is layered in the back! Gorgeous.

BTW...I'm not some crazy web person. I will not post your pics anywhere - only going to show it to this stylist - if that's okay with you. Guess I prob should've asked 1st, huh...:look:

I was surprised at some of the products they recommended. Dr. Miracles?! Pantene?! I use to use the whole Pantene R&N line religiously before coming here for years and IMHO that stuff is complete garbage:perplexed

Yea - when I saw dr. Miracles - I thought...."well - it is going down hill after that..."

You are better off with Peppermint oil... not that CRAP.

Amen SamJ...i know women like that too! And they actually have the nerve to say to me "...i wonder why your hair keeps getting longer and mine doesn't...":ohwell:

Well, I certainly won't compare my self to the wonderful Pink!!!!

But - Yea - I get those statements and comments all the time...." YO' HARRR GIRL!!!!" - Whilst feeling for tracks.....:lachen:
I just stopped giving advice....

Am I the only one who noticed the NAOMI CAMPBELL is one of his clients. Have you seen her hair :nono: :nono:

That's all I needed to see

That poor woman is as bald as an eagle:rolleyes:..... I saw Beyonce's name too... Her hair is JACKED... So he must be the "wig stylist" for these people.:nono:

I knew the article was in trouble after that too...But I read on...

I think he made some good points that most women don't know.

I get my haired trimmed every relaxer. I get a relaxer every 10-12 weeks. To me a true trim is no more than 1/8 of an inch removed. That is exactly what my stylist does. We have had serious converstions about that. I personaly do not feel like it has hindered my growth.

Second I agree with having a relationship with your stylist. I go to my stylist for relaxers only. She knows my hair goals and she knows what I expect of her. I did a thourough search for an hair care individual not just a hair stylist. During our consultation she really impressed me. Believe me I quized her based on the information I got from here.

The advertising was obvious but I can't blame a person for trying to make a living.

ETA: I am considering changing my trims to every other relaxer. Just want to see if I see a difference.

I agree... I think that I am so jaded and I have had so many bad experiences - that a relationship with a stylist is just a joke to me. I am happy for those who do find someone great. I am sure they exist.

OK information. Poor choice of products. Too much relying on stylist which makes the consumer not able to take care of their own hair. Did he even mention protective styling and sealing moisture?

Yeah I saw Naomi, Beyonce and Wanda as reference. If I were him I would reconsider. I do not want hair like any of them.:ohwell:

i am sure our comments (by the lurker) will be evaluated and the next article will be improved, i.e. no mention of naomi campbell, etc.

Interesting article. I agree with him with respect to having a good stylist IN LIEU of being educated on your hair yourself. Some women (myself included) have good relationships with the same stylist for years and years, and I only trust the stylist that I've had since I was 13 to put my relaxer in, because I honestly think I'd jack my hair up if I did it myself. If you have the same person, whether it's you or someone else, putting on a relaxer, I think your margin for error is lessened (IMHO). His product reqs SUCKED tho! OMG. Even I of little skills know enough not to use that Pantene junk!

Having said that, I agree with those that have said that this article is for those that don't have access to or utilize this and other healthy hair resources. There is a lot of ignorance out there, and we all know it. The thing is, if that article can get even one woman or girl to improve her regimen and grow her hair, then it's a good thing.

ummmm i'm sure someone on here has posted this already (i didn't read thru the entire thread) but I just called and yeah - to get a touch up with Mr. Eugene it will cost you $220. not to worry though - that INCLUDES the blow dry. ROFLMAO!!!!
:lachen: :lachen: :lachen: :lachen: :lachen: madness i tell you. (not hating on those who can afford it though. he uses affirm. :spinning:)

$225? For a touch up? GTFOH! That's ridiculous. I don't care if he's using Affirm, DE, OR Phyto, NO touch up is worth that much!

things that sucked:

The average person loses between 50 and 100 hairs a day, and the hair on your scalp only grows at an average of one-tenth of an inch weekly.
When you do the math, this can explain why the hair is slow to grow. Making a commitment to grow out your hair is also an investment of your time to do what is needed to grow strong and healthy locks. Are you ready to enter Eugene’s 12-step hair rehab? How is there a connection between shed hair (whole strand) and growth per week/month? Wouldn't the shed hair and the growing hair be in two different phases of the growth cycle?

HAIRCUT

“The haircut that I decide on is usually one that involves a starting-out process. I am very sensitive to the client’s desire to have long hair. I tend to cut off as much of the problem area the first time, and then lightly trim every eight weeks (or every relaxer) as the hair grows longer,” says Eugene. Why not trim as needed, instead of on a timeline?

“I first started coming to Eugene in May 2006. At that time my hair was in bad shape. It was about to my shoulders, but it was thin and damaged, especially at the ends. Somehow, even though I had just met Eugene, I let him convince me that I needed to cut my hair if I wanted it to grow. This was hard for me because it always took my hair so long to grow, but I knew he was right. After he cut it, I have to say that I hated it. My hair was now about ear, maybe chin-length, and I felt ugly. I didn’t want to be seen. Looking back, that was the best thing I could’ve ever done to my hair. It’s been almost two and a half years now, and my hair is now well below my shoulders, shiny and healthy. I didn’t really believe Eugene when he said he could grow my hair. I had heard that before, but he really did it. I love the way my hair looks now!”
:rolleyes:at the bolded

So all and all after reading that article, amen for finding LHCF. What I did not like is that the article continued to make it seem like our hair can't or won't grow without a magic stylists or cutting and as if the power was not our own. There was also no talk about protein/moisture balance and the importance of protecting the ends and retention. Is it a conspiracy? Are we NEVER supposed to know how to take care of our own hair and that *gasp*, it grows just like everyone elses?

See the red bolded, Believe it or not this was the cure for my shedding relaxed hair, so I was told. Did it work? You see me all natural now with a head full of hair. Thank goodness I found the culprit. I know what you mean about him not mentioning what's really the truth. Why not mention protein/moisture balance. That's the alpha and omega to hair care...just my opinion. And $220 for a touch up. Let's get real. Even if I was a celeb making $3.5M a year, I don't believe in paying too much for anything...

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat!!!! and for Affirm?!?!?! Wow thanks for calling...the person's hair that he did was okay but I just did not see any mad scissoring skills like "Neeko" 220.00 (repeating...) Affirm (not that it is a bad relaxer but we can buy it for less than 30 bucks!!!)....N**** Please....
