#4 Natural Hair

j0414100_Full.jpg

Educated Black people like natural hair. They love to show their pride for their race and culture by wearing their hair in its unrelaxed and natural state. This may include a range a styles, such as braids, twists, locs, or freestyle kinky/curly/coily tresses.

Since natural hair is so versatile, they can rock any number of styles. While educated Blacks love for people to admire their hair, they hate it when someone touches it without invitation or permission. And if you do touch it, they HATE stupid comments like, “Wow! I had no idea it was so soft!” That’s a surefire way to get told off. Educated Blacks also love for both Blacks and non-Blacks to comment on how much they love their hair. The standard comments are typically, “I love your hair!” or “I wish my hair could do that!”

Educated Blacks love to encourage other Blacks to allow their hair to grow out in its natural state. However, what they love most is to give Blacks that wear relaxers guilt trips about how they are conforming to the European standard of beauty. It makes them feel so much better than you to know that they are educated and liberated enough to not have to be a conformist.

If you are a non-white, don’t ever think that you are being complimentary if you ever wear an afro wig or attempt to wear your hair in dreadlocks. And be sure to never refer to your otherwise frizzy hair as feeling “nappy.” Aside from the fact that it’s offensive, it also makes you sound AND look ridiculous.

this is too funny! I cant even lie that is a recurring prejudice of mine about the phd black buppie crowd. Talk about conformity! that's "black educated" subculture pressure to conform just to fit in and be accepted right there!....thats prob why I resist the image lol

As a budding feminist scholar and education fanatic I get it on the regular about my 20" yaki straight weaves from the "conscious educated" black folk smh Yes, my natural hair is unrelaxed but I like the manageability factor of weaves. I have high-maintenance hair, if I wore my real hair it would probably all fall out because Im so lazy. I would rather roll outa bed run a brush through my tracks a couple times and look flawless versus having to wake up an hour and a half early to detangle and wash my hair 3-4 times a week.As far as I'm concerned, my hair is not a determinant or a reinforcer of my black or feminist identity nor is it directly a byproduct of any kinda socialized pressure to conform to any beauty ideology (for me that is)

To be honest, I love when I encounter those educated-conscious naturals that have something to say about straight hair or weaves...gives me amplole opportunity to flex my intellectual skills on blackness, femininity and liberation over their inadequate self-validating arguments about straight hair being anti-black. guess all of those educated north african, Caribbean, middle-eastern and latin american women of color with naturally straight 2-type hair should feel racially inferior to the type 4s according to the educated & natural interllectuals! lololol

People can be intellectually liberated and not wear wear locs, burn incense and listen to neo-soul lmao

*flipping my waist length straight hair and putting on my chanel shades*

Lemme stop... bc I'll prob be the exact stereotype in a year or two lol

I am wondering what the concept Educated Black People really means. Do other races have similar sites. Surely not... Imagine the Educted Asian People site???...

The concept makes me feel that the members of that club think that they are some kinds of rarity that need to be highlighted ... that shouldn't... "yeah, I am part of an exclusive group and you don't...nah,nah, nah" BS:drunk::wallbash:

Look at it that way, most educated black women prefer natural hair, most black women are relaxed. Hum, so most black women are not educated...Great message to the non black people: whenever you see a relaxed black lady, don't ask her where she got her MBA from... What ??? you mean my Mid Back hAir... at LHCF of course:lachen:

Thanks, I just don't like when people claim themselves as educated people. Education is a learning curve. My grandma didn't have a degree, she knew much more than me with my degrees. She was natural, I am relaxed. Gosh, the world is upside down:drunk: Take care ...

I love this site.

To the ladies taking it too serious....it is all in fun. But if it is really hurting peoples feeling like that I guess there might be some truth behind some of these things :hide: LOL

(I think when they say educated they mean degree wise...but we all know that just because someone has books does not mean they have a lick of common sense!)

My black med school aquaintances LOVE to talk about this site. Some of that stuff is on point! LMAO

Why do naturals have to belong to a group? I get so tired of natural hair being an issue. Does any other race feel ashamed of their naturalness? Why does ethnic hairstyles relate to black people? If an Asian woman wears her hair natural, even if she did it up with chop sticks or whatever, is that considered to be an ethnic hair style? Why do mostly black people hate on black naturals so much? Is it because we remind them of what they are ashamed of which is being black??? Do other black people want me to perm my hair so other races won't see that our hair is really kinky or curly? Hmmmm.....but the site is funny. I think it's to be taken lightly and to be laughed at. I just said all of that other stuff because I just wanted to get that off of my chest...:ohwell:

***Disclaimer- the statements made above are not aimed at any at LHCF, I'm speaking of the dum dums that I deal with from day to day.

This article is actually very true...I go to a black school, where it seems half of the female population like it straight, while the "educated" half are all wearing a large afro, or growing dreads down their backs. And it seems like the naturals are the first to snicker at the "weave" and/or girls who wear straight hair. Not knocking any naturals (because I'm darn near one myself...I can't even find any relaxed strands anymore!), but this is what I've observed on my campus...which is full of educated black folk, let us tell it...

Don't worry I am not taking it too seriously, it's quite funny ... The thing is I was not commenting about is it good or not to go natural... well, it is a personal choice. I am relaxed, but I really love my best friend's natural hair. My point was it is really unfair to stratify people based upon their eductional level. I am an engineer myself with a MBA in finance and I love chocolate, lots of chocolate:drunk:. Is that a healthy choice or not, doesn't matter, that is my problem. Why would I try to find out if other people with MBA like me love chocolates just to feel that I am on the safe side. Does that matter?? I love chocolate (or natural hair) that is it. Don't need statistics to feel secure about whether or not I am on the right club...:nono: "By the way, it is a proven fact that only smart, over-educated, articulate black women love chocolates. So you, out there, under-educated black women, who don't like chocolates, I am sorry you're not welcome in our exclusive educated people club :lachen: WELL IT'S ALL FUN. It's only my point of view, nothing to get serious about:grin: Take care

Hmmm... never thought of it this way; I guess that is kind of insulting.

I did check out the stuff white people like and was amused to find Mos Def on the list. Also, Barack Obama was on there.
