Does anyone soak their ponytail holders in oil?

Does anyone soak their ponytail holders in oil before use? And does it really make a difference? I've been thinking that ponytail holders may be the cause of some of my breakage around the ponytail area. And since I am either in a bun or ponytail everyday I need to try something new. I just started two days ago, but now I'm wondering if it's pointless ...

^^ LOL. That's funny. I also have a lot of product on my hair, but not that much that it would act as a buffer. And do you ponytail or bun on a daily basis? I do. :ohwell: I tried it for two days now and I must admit I hate fetching my ponytail holder out of the oil. I wonder if I'm taking it too far. Your hair (and you) are gorgeous, BTW.

I don't do it but I've heard of people doing it.

Are you wearing your ponytail in the same spot daily? If so, move it around. That could be the cause of the breakage also.

Thank you girl! yeah its the pony tail mostly every day occasional bun here and there. If you dont have enough oil in your hair I think it would be beneficial :yep:

It is.

It took me years too figure out why my sides would never grow like my back and the top. Dwayne, a male member, of this board posted a thread about ponytail holders of any kind breaking the hair.
What the Hairs In Your Ponytail Are Trying to Tell You

I stopped using them and purchased some Good Hair Days Magic Grip Pins and duck clips to catch my hair up and lo and behold my sides are beginning to show some progress. I know it's goin to take a while to to really reap the benefits of not wearing pth, but it's worth it.

good tip..i was just coming in here to suggest good hair day pins...i love them! :yep:

I use satin scrunchies now. But before I used those, I soaked y regualr scrunchies in oil. I got a baggy (the kind with the zipper) and put a few scrunchies in it. Then I poured the oil into the baggy and squished it around to make sure the scunchies were nicely saturated. I kept them in the baggy and just got one out when I wanted. I'd wash them every week or two

This worked great for me because the scrunchies always dried the mess outta my hair. Coating them with oil made a HUUUUUUGE difference :yep:

Also be sure to move your ponytail around. Top middle, middle, lower, lower left, lower right, etc. Never keep your ponytail in one spot for too long.

Wouldn't they make your hair greasy? :barf:
That depends on the type of oil used. Some oil penetrate the hair (like olive oil) while others sit on the hair, looking as greasy as can be.

I used to soak mine, especially when I did the ponytail rollersetting method. Now, if I do this, I spray the hair-safe ponytail holder with oil. I have some organic olive oil that comes in a spray.

I dunno, maybe my hair just gets oily easily.

I use organic jojoba oil and I have used organic evoo... I cant use a lot of oil, it makes my hair yucky. I section my hair in 4 sections and put a nickel sized amount of oil in each section.

A soaked ponytail holder just sounds terrible for my hair. Would it work if you soaked it in a creamy leave in?

I think it would work just fine with a creamy leave-in. :yep: The whole point is to protect the hair so this would work. :)
The example I gave was for wet hair. When I wear ponytail holders on dry hair, my holders are satin and loose, not binding so those don't get sprayed or soaked in oil at all. Those who wear holders on dry hair that are more binding, may want to use oil or leave-in, as you asked about.

That's good advice, I will start moving the location around.

Yeah, my hair drinks oil. The only I like is JBCO or regular castor oil, everything else just sits on my hair. JBCO is the only one where I feel like it's locking in the moisture but not just sitting on my hair.

Wow, that's interesting. I don't have hair thick enough to totally go without a ponytail holder, but I will look into getting silkier ones or maybe using pantyhose material or something like that instead.
I use the scunci ponytail holders that are made with satin. They are available at CVS. I also move my ponytail around
Thank!

Yeah, I think I will stick to soaking them now (better than not it seems) and moving the location of the ponytail around as well.

No. I use oil in my hair daily anyway and I've found the one that works for me --- JBCO.

Thanks a lot, Isis. I guess I will stick to soaking it for now b/c it seems to be beneficial.

Ditto! I used to use the cloth covered bands and everytime I took down my pony- there was always hair on the holder. Now I use these kid satin covered scrunchies that I got from Family DOllar and they are just perfect. They don't pull or make me lose hair at all.

Soaking the reg ponytail holders in oil didn't work as well as using the satin covered scrunchies.

May I gently encourage you to try eliminating ponytail holders altogether.
I have very fine, thin hair and had I stopped using them long ago, I would have thickened up my tresses long ago. People with stronger, coarser or non-relaxed hair would have less trouble with breakage using ponytail holders of any kind.

Everyone has given great advice here, but if you are talking about thin hair (versus just fine), practice creating faux ponytails with clips and pins. You'll be happy you did. Dwayne's thread is dead on.

My hair is thin and fine. How do you create faux ponytails with just clips and pins? I used clip in extensions once (for a few months) and it ate my hair :nono: and made it even thinner. The way I do my ponytails and buns now is to pull my own hair into the ponytail holder and protect the ends. Then I take pins and pin a faux ponytail around my own hair. How would I be able to use the faux hair in the method you talk about?

I think I will look into this. The kiddie ones covered in satin (as long as I can find it in black).

I have to apologize because I am horrible at taking pics and posting in my fotki, so I don't have any newer pictures without a ponytail holder.

Here is a pic that does show the use of a pony holder (not doubled for tightness) that I placed and then used a Magic Grip pin to secure it so the ponytail holder wouldn't fall out. I started trying to replicate this without the ponytail holder and have been a bit successful. It doesn't give me a perfect ponytail look, but it's close enough so I can go to work and social activities without looking a HAM.

Great.

I cut knee highs into 1.5 inch strips. I do not use the band portion.

Thanks!

Ok, I'm going to try this. Because I think I also may be damaging my hair in the middle also. I took a starting point pic last night and my hair is shorter in the very middle. I think I just pull a lot out with my daily buns and ponies.
Yes. I noticed less hair in the ponytail holder after removal
Yeah, I don't like the amount of hair that comes out :nono: so I have to try something new.
YES! They slide right out.

Thanks.

I improvised and instead of soaking in oil, I now baggy my bun with plastic and place the ponytail holder over the baggy. SO now it never touches my actual hair and I am not seeing all my hair wrapped around the ponytail holder. I use a phony bun to cover it. I will continue doing this until my own hair is long and thick enough to wear without help and then I will pin it up instead of using holders.

I will try to post pics, but my hair was breaking too in the back using scruncies. The reason were they were too tight. Now, I use a child size head light head band and it gives a very loose pony. So far, I have not receive any breakage in my front and sides.

Here is a link to a similar headband that I use. I am also natural so I am not sure how it would hold up on relax hair!
