Do men hit on you more with long hair?

Yes, I've gotten more attention, especially from Black men, with my hair longer. One guy said I must be mixed, so I told him my mother is AA and my father.....is African.

His response? "Oh! Well I need to leave you alone, then." All this in front of my husband who also found the guy's response funny.

What the *bleep* did he mean by that? That because you weren't mixed, you and your hair were no longer appealing? If anything he needed to "leave you alone" because your husband was there! Unbelievable. Another prime example of why I rarely give black men the time of day. I know stupid comments come from all men of all races, but...

Unfortunately, that was the case with me. I remember one time in high school, this guy that tried to talk to me was singing the jingle from "Just 4 Me" kiddie perm commercial out loud in the train station...I thought that was hilarious!

I know this is a corny question, but out of curiosity I was wondering if anyone has gone from short to long hair and found that men were suddenly more interested?

Even better, were there men who wouldn't give you the time of day until you grew your hair out? Did you do the right thing and turn your back on them sending your long hair flying in their faces?

No not at all. I had way more complements when my hair was short.

I got so much attention when my hair was relaxed and I wore my long, curly phonytail that I finally just stopped wearing the darn thing during the day. It was weird. The same men that were ignoring me the day before were now running after me like fools.
ohwell.gif
But I still wore it to clubs/bars because it guaranteed I got a lot of free drinks.

Hi MizAvalon

I find it amusing when people tell on themselves, as he did.
laugh.gif
Yeah, my sense of humor can be different. Yeah, I guess he meant that since I'm 1/2 African, there was no point in continuing to converse.

Something tells me that I wouldn't have been missing much if he had decided to continue.

I think yes and no. I know most men go for the sista with long hair, but then again, I see them hitting on females with short hair as well. I know yesterday I had my hair curled with rods that caused it to touch my nape area but that didn’t stop any males from trying to talk to me, in fact, I think that hairstyle got me that special 30% discount on those shoes I bought
smile.gif
. IMO, sometimes hair really does matter (lengthwise) but then again most men talk to anything with legs so hair is just an added benefit...

well i had a anita baker cut and i've had wigs and i must say i get alot of attention with the long wavy almost waist length wig. then again i only wear the wig to the club and i have low cut shirt and low rise pants so maybe that is what it is

That's the "just got out of bed" look - they probably think you're looking hot and sexy!

Flyjump, u know now that u mentioned it I get the same thing. Sometimes after I work out I run to the store to pick something up or run an errand. Well I look BEYOND Rough because Im sweaty with my hair all over my head and no makeup bc if I had any on it would be gone by then. Sometimes I think I get MORE attention in this case than when I look really nice....

I don't know if I have noticed a difference. I get attention even when I wear my hair up, especially now with my new braid-out up-do(ends still protected). I've gotten a lot of attention with that. Personally, I think it's all in how ones carries herself. If one is feeling more confident and loving towards the self, I think that creates a glow and people notice that, because you are exuding positve energy (hair up or down).

I get more attention when my hair is shorter or in braids. Men seem to be intimidated by long (real) hair. If I have braid (cornrows, micros etc.) I get attention all day, but my real hair...they look---they just don't approach, like they feel i'm out of their league or something. I have more white men approaching me than anything.

[/ QUOTE ]

I would like to know more about the psychology on this phenomenon. Why should men (black men) be intimidated by long, real hair? Does having long, real hair represent power to them? And why aren't white men intimidated by the same hair? This may have been already discussed in the Off Topic Discussion board but it's an interesting point to perhaps be reintroduced on that board.

[/ QUOTE ]

It is very strange. My sister is in college and recently stopped wearing braids and weave. She's now maintaining jaw length hair. More black men approach her when she's in braids and weave then they do with her jaw length, healthy, shiny hair and she actually looks better with her real hair. Very strange indeed.

I think since my hair passed my shoulders I definietly hear more comments from men and the stares from men of other races....more latin men are far more vocal, I don't know if that is because they are more vocal these days or what.

When I had chin length hair to shoulder I'd get attention but I feel it was an overall thing, complements based on your overall look, but since the longer length...the stares are focused on my hair.....I sometimes I feel people are trying to figure out if its real or not...funny

I don't know that black men are actually intimidated by long hair. If anything, they are probably in awe of a black woman with long hair. I don't think it has the same effect on white men because long haired white women are a dime a dozen, so they are used to that. When I wore long, crochet braids down to MY BUTT, you would not believe how many white men AND women thought that they were my real hair. Most of the time they just don't know the difference, so seeing a black woman with long hair is no big deal. Now, most black men know the deal, so when they find out that a long haired sister is actually rocking her own hair, they don't know what to do with themselves.

Since my hair is almost ALWAYS in a bun or some protective style, ...don't get me wrong, I get plenty of attention now...but I notice that I get tons more looks when I wear my hair down....every once in a blue moon....but I think the majority of men love a woman with long hair.

They get a little more flirty, you know:

definately!! everytime i get weave in, a significant amount of guys try to holla. its crazy..

No, not really. Maybe I have that "unapproachable. I'm already married" air about me. But up, down, wavy, or straight, no matter how I wear my hair, I don't really get bugged.

Lotsa men hit on me no matter how long my hair is...especially when it's looking rough. And I'm usually not looking cute no matter what the length. But they still holla.
