I wash my hair/scalp at least once a week or more, I wouldn’t feel comfy waiting any longer than that, there’s nothing like a nice clean healthy scalp! :yep:

My mom says this stuff. I just look at her a shake my head. :nono: "Woman, wash your hair! And you wonder why you're edges are thinning. " Anyway though, I tell her at least to wash it once a week. My mother actually does have thick pretty hair, but it's only shoulder length (at one point in life, pre-LHCF, I thought this was long).

I wash my hair everyday, or at least every other day. Why? Because I just love washing my hair, it feels so good and my scalp just feels so lovely and healthy. I'm sure I don't have to do it this often, but I just enjoy it and my hair seems to enjoy it as well. It's so moisturized and such. I do a special diluting process to my poo tho. Before when I only washed it once a week, it was healthy too. The problem then was I just wasn't protecting my ends.

I wash my hair once a week despite my mother telling me I'm "washing the perm out". I just do my thing and keep it moving. Even before joining this site I made sure to wash my hair once every two weeks (salon/pay day) and I had people look at me like I was stupid for even doing that :ohwell:.

If dirt makes your hair grow then I'd rather have short hair .....I have a girlfriend that washes her hair ever 3 weeks...and I can not stand the way her hair smells....she keeps it gelled in a bun..one time she used my brush to do hair and my brush was stinking .I had to throw it away...I told her, her hair stinks and she was like I don't smell anything and if it did my husband would tell me....her hair has a sour mildew smell to it:barf:
LOL, LMAO:lachen::lachen::lachen:!!!!

Once a week---any more, my hair gets too tangled and its too much manipulation
Any less---my hair dries out.

Anyway, i think its pretty accurate for black people who know nothing about hair to say that water is bad for your hair.....IMO water & washing can absolutly be bad for our hair if you dont know what to do after.
If you get your hair wet or wash it, its going to remove the oils from your hair, then its going to most likely leave your cuticles alittle open--which will leave your hair dry and porous (and our hair is already naturally porous, chances are if you dont know anything about hair, their hair is going to be even worse).---Then to the women who wear relaxers or presses, the water/wash is going to leave you with airdryed hair that should not be combed---or as we know it will break rather easily.
All they know is that their hair is now dull, dry, and brittle--and then their going to try and comb/brush it, and its going to break.....thats nothing but bad.---plus if its damaged you can now see that very good.

But we know to use the right shampoos and conditoners that will moisturize hair and close the cuticles, and to afterwards apply oil, leaveins, or moisturizers....and if we airdry not to comb our hair ect.

For people who dont know anything, non washing is probally the best thing for them---it is helping their hair probally better than anything they've ever tried, they just have the wrong name for it (dirt)......their not manipulating their hair, and it at least has some of its natural oil to help it out. That probally a thousand times better than someone who would use the wrong shampoos and conditoners daily, then think they have to use heat daily....or just shampoo and airdry and rip the come through...all sorts of terrible things.

Wash or no wash, your hair will grow regardless, I think it is probably because of less manipulation that you retain more length that's probably why people think you hair grows more when you don't wash.

I wash my hair weekly but when in weave or braids I tend to go for 1 month or longer and I see the same growth rate. It's been about 3 weeks since I last washed (currently have a weave) but my scalp is still very clean.

ITA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yuk! I wash every 5 to 7 days at least. I hate the smell of dirty hair.

My 19 yr old daughter believes this (she hates doing her hair), and I tell you to get her dirty butt in that shower and wash her hair, imp hair starts to smell after 2 wks of not washing.

the only time i dont wash my hair as often is if i'm in protectives
(which i am in now)

but even then i always get the itch to wash.

when my hair is out...i'm usually washing 2 or 3 times a week.

Yuk....nothing worse than a woman with funky hair. How can you keep a man with dirty funky hair.

Okay, I'm stressed these days and so lacking tact, but if dirt made your hair grow the average black woman would have long hair and white people would be bald. And anyway, I wouldn't give a rat's furry bumbum if not washing made hair grow. I am not about to compromise standards of cleanliness for some long hair. Washing dries my skin out, too. Do I stop doing it? No, I get some dang on lotion.

Usually I wash every week. I can be pretty active so my hair can easily get dirty/sweaty/smelly/itchy if I don't wash within that time period.

i think those who dont wash their hair often
and DO get good growth

it's probably more because of the low manipulation
and not the "not washing"

ha.

my grandmother doesnt wash her hair that often
and her hair has always been long

but i think it's mainly due to the fact that she doesnt really mess w/ it

I'm glad to see that most of us wash our hair at least once a week! I hate stanking hair. I don't think anyone should ever go more than two weeks.

I wash at least once a week now, but when I was younger I used to wash once a month and sometimes longer than that! :barf:
I used to think my hair would grow too if it was dirty and that shampoo simply dried my hair completely. I'm glad I know better now.

Thats the point! Now you know better! Personally, unless I have the nerve to address the issue... I can't look down on someone else for honestly not knowing. For years I didnt know better and my hair suffered because of it. I wore braids for months and didnt bother to do any type of washing. My hair grew like crazy and I already knew the Crown and Glory method of pulling the dirt hair apart. But once out of the braids ..... thats another story. But God heard my prayers and I found this site and Im like yessss  but still i made a mistake with too much manipulation with washing and my hair has breakage when it didnt before. But its a learning process! I now know I dont need to do too much and jump on every knew bandwagon introduced on this site. CW everyday is still okay. But low manipulation!

Try having to shampoo a woman's wildly matted, stank'n, linted...hair while in cosmetology school, (oh and uh if they request you, you had to do their hair, nails, facial...)all the while staying professional. She literally jumped out a window of PennySaver Inn ran across the street to our school to get her do (un)done. Let tell ya'll you can see everything that's across the street with our big *** windows.:lachen:
Hmmm, not a pretty site and it(I mean she) did not smell to friendly...more like something viscious! It wasn't my client but when one sista suffered, we all suffered. We were always willing to help each other out at school...But hmmm:nono:
I know what ya'll think'n PennySaver Inn, uhh huh, it was one of those joints that's y they torn them down after unteen years. But those were the days.

I wash at least 2x a week if not more. I can't stand a dirty scalp. If dirt makes your hair grow then I should be bald.

I think that the only time that i went long without washing was with cornrows but i will only leave them in 1-2 weeks.

Now, I can't knock the girls idea that not using shampoo on a regular basis MIGHT have helped her hair grow, but it wasn't because her hair was dirty.

1) Low(er) manipulation...
2) Not stripping hair of natural oils/hair was more moisturized...
3) If the scalp is irritated from the shampoo she uses, it gets a chance to heal...
4) She might have hard water, and that was weakening/breaking off her hair...

So, yeah, I can definitely see how changing how/the frequency that she washes her hair could influence the growth rate. It wasn't the leftover skin cells, oils, and products gunking up on her scalp that was the cause, though. :ohwell:

Even when I had dreads, and didn't use shampoo, etc, on my head on a regular basis, I rinsed my scalp CLEAN everyday, and used practically NO products whatsoever - so I can see going for a while without using shampoo or conditioner, and still keeping your hair CLEAN.

So what did you cleanse your scalp with if you didn't wash. I like the idea.:look:

EWWW!!! That's nasty! :nono:

However, I must confess....years back when I was in middle school and I didn't have the LHCF, I used to go weeks, sometimes MONTHS without washing my hair. :nono: Even when I had braids in my hair I wouldn't wash my hair not once while the braids were in my hair for months. :(

Back then I wondered why my hair always had dandruff, or why when I would wet a brush and smooth my edges down, my hair always stunk to high heaven. :barf: EEEEK!!! Now days my hair always has a clean, "just freshly-washed" type of smell. I LOVE it!

I can't even imagine going a week without washing my hair (let alone months!). :nono: It just doesn't feel right. It's like cleaning your body. Who would only shower or bathe once a couple of weeks, or once a month?? Can you imagine all of the dirt??....ugh...I don't even want to think about it!

I think the "overwashing" concern is just a myth. That's like denying a plant water because you're afraid of OVERwatering it. Our scalp is like soil, and our hair is like flowers/weeds. In order to grow healthily, I think we should put water on our hair often.

Back when I first joined LHCF, I used to wash every 3 or 4 days, and my hair grew like a weed! My hair got the longest it had ever gotten with Co-washes, shampoos, protective styles, and little manipulation. Now days due to my crazy schedule and the texture of my fine hair, I opt for at least once a week. But I still have to have SOME type of water on my head every week. :yep:

I voted biweekly. Since i permed march 3, i now get it washed every 2 weeks at the domenican salon. Its the only time i get the whole nine meaning wash, deep cond, set and blow.

I live a busier life and find that i have less time to take care of my hair so i dont wash at all at home. For work, i just put some silkener, grease quickly the ends, and clip the hair up voila! everyday and at night let it out under my satin bonnet. But no more washing for me, now that my hair is more fragile relaxed, i tend to rip it and it NEEDS a deep cond so i just pop my pills in the morning and get it washed at the salon. it works best for me. i hate drying or rollersetting myself or sleeping with rollers. my last wash was march 3, i havent washed it yet since...and we're march 13 lol i know i m bad but soooooooo lazy. i could now easily go 3 weeks without washing it hate to manipulate my hair and all the breakage for me happens at wash time. The less manipulation, the thicker my ends stay

Is that your hair or a wig? if it is your hair its growing like weeds

I voted "At least once a week". In the winter, it is once a week. In the summer, my washes increase and I enjoy it.

I had a girlfriend who washed her hair every morning and her head still scalp still stunk. The girls in class refused to play with her hair.

So I was getting my hair cornrowed last night and the chick who was braiding it keeps her hair really low like faded normally...but she decided she wanted to see how it would do if she just let it grow naturally twa. Anyhow she made the comment on not washing her hair because "dirt makes my hair grow"...I was like:blush:. I didn't care to comment because home chick was in my head and I didnt' care to upset her. I couldn't help but think about that the entire time she braided. So my question how often do you all wash your hair?

----Wow I didn't see the other poll from 06'...feel free to ignore the poll...---

LOL, I understand. :yep:
All those dang MYTHS...That's why Im so glad I found LHCF. I tried letting my hair stay dirty when I was younger. All I did was put a nasty ring around the tub when I finally washed that I had to clean before my mama came and :kick:. That didn't work plus I got sores from scratching too much sometimes. I wash my hair once a week and usually CW daily.

Is that your hair or a wig? if it is your hair its growing like weeds

Thanks Hair Iam! its not a wig it's my hair indeed lol i just found that the less i manipulate it, the more it remains thick.

But i won't lie all that not washing plus the vits make my head itch a lot!!!!! (i scratch, massage my scalp every second)i really keep a low maintenance now as everyday i just put the serum and grease the ends, i know my hair must be dirty (even in the house i leave the hair loose under the satin bonnet) and i make sure i grease well the ends, it s dirty but i think i may leave it like that for 3 weeks (dare i say a month lol)

It itches too much because of the vits but i dont apply nothing to the scalp, the dominican stylist told me to make sure my silkener serum does not touch the scalp ( i dont know why though) and just grease on the ends. so between salon visits nothing else gets applied.

It s funny my other girlfriend who's below brastrap and keeps twists for like months and grew it that way told me the same thing that dirt makes her hair grow. at first i used to look at her puzzled but i now understands what she meant and what i apply: " i noticed the less i wash my hair, the less i manipulate it all i need is to clip it in between hair salons. i dont recommend it cause it s gross but each time i go back to the salon i m pleasantly surprised specially when i think that if u look at my sig pix and this one below there is actually 2 months and 2 weeks between them!!! i love leaving the hair alone now, no manipulation no nothing i just feel each time i see the hair it gets thicker and i dont plan on trimming anymore either

i dont know why i m soooo lazy with my hair these days. i so dread washing it lol but i m pleased by the fact that it seems it grows longer and thicker. i think i just retain more this way not handling the hair too much.

For me it's all about low manipulation that helps my hair grow. I will go 2-4 weeks w/o washing, but I use very little product in my hair. Most of the time I use a leave-in conditioner to "set" my styles with some oil on my ends, but I don't put anything on my scalp.

I don't think dirt makes anyones hair grow, I believe everyone's hair grows but some people need a low manipulation regimines to retain their growth. If washing everyday or every other day works for you, by all means do you. I know what works for me and my hair and I have never gotten a complaint about smell or noticed build-up.

I think my hair looks it's best after about 2 weeks of not washing. My avatar is 4 weeks post and I was getting compliments all the time on it. I think everyone needs to find what works for them and run with it.

it was a combination of this post
and all the herbal essences long term relationship reviews
that prompted me to wash my hair earlier than i had intended to.

lol...

since i put my hair in these twists
i was trying to not wash them so soon (today is day 5)
because i want them to last longer

but shoot...i really cant go but a few days without washing

i knew i shouldnt have even set that goal.

current goal: atleast once a week!

I used to do it bi-weekly but time is of the essence.. When it gets warmer I will try my best to go back to bi-weekly... My hair thrives in moisture and wetness ontop of a clean scalp!:look:
