Can someone tell me how to part the hair for braids or twists?

TRANSITION OVER! 11-22-14
I think I finally have the twist technique down, but when it came to parting the hair to do them, it looked absolutely horrible. I was doing mini twists. Can someone give me any advice on how to make a twist style look nice all the way thru? I hope this makes sense. I must have underestimated where one twist started and where one twist ended.

Girl you better just start parting! I don’t think there’s any particular technique. I part my hair from ear to ear first and then make either box parts ½” to 1” in size, or I make triangular parts. Each ear to ear part I make starts off small in the back along the nape, and gets a little large as I move toward my hairline. The parts at the crown of my head are usually larger, about an inch in width. I hope this helps.

You just have to keep practicing until you figure it out, be patient with yourself. A lot of people don't even part for twists, they just grab and twist.

Yea I just grab and twist. My hair's thick and I'm not doing mini twists so the parts don't show. Now I do try to do nice parts for the front but that's easy 'cause I can see what I'm doing in the mirror.

After detangling my hair really well, I part a row from ear to ear with my hands. I clip up the hair above the part so it doesn't get in the way. Then I just start twisting that row.

For my absolutely first times twisting, I did like the other posters--grabbed the hair with my fingers, felt around to see if it was kinda the same size, then started twisting. I progressed to wanting sharper parts and made rows of parts from left to right. Then didn't like the "exactness" of it and learned how to part with my comb (check out my LHCF gallery). Good luck with ya twists :)

Hi DDtexlaxd,
when I first started to style my own hair, I used 2 mirrors postioned so that I could see the front and back of my hair. This really helped until I got used to parting my hair without mirrors. People would always comment on how neat my hair was. It just takes a little patience and time until you can part to a standard you like.

I just grab and twist too......even when I do the little bitty twists, I think it takes WAY too much time to part and stuff--just grab some hair and go for what you know!:)

I twist my hair going back like cornrows. I've never tried the grab and go, but have seen the pics from members who do and it comes out nice.

Are you doing a twist out or just wearing the twists. If you're doing a twist out just grab and go. But, if you're wearing them, then just make a little box around a section of hair and then twist.

Front:

When I twist my hair, I use a comb to part the front in thin sections like I'm going to cornrow. Then I go along the row and make a small triangular part with my fingers and twist that section. I keep going until the end of the row, and keep doing that until the front is done.

Back:

At the back I do the same, except the rows go diagonally, starting from the bottom right section of my nape. I don't like my parts being obvious.

I just started twisting this way about 4 weeks ago when I started wearing my hair twisted most of the time. I don't have any pics yet.

Thanks for the advice. My hair is short in comparision to most of ya'll who answered my thread, but I'm going to try some of the suggestions you've given me. Thanks again!:notworthy

My hair is short too. I would recommend using duck bill clips to part your hair. Twist use a holding gel, and secure your twist with a metal clip (used for setting hair) and sit under the dryer. The clips hold your hair in the direction you want it to lay. You can use a scarf or stocking to tie around for accent. I know it's hard finding style ideas.
