how to part your hair for braids or twists

I am trying to learn how to do my hair as a transitioner. My hair is not that long, so I can't braid or twist going strait back. I'm trying to learn how to do some braid or twistouts. I can do the bottom nape going across, but the next layers look sloppy. How can I get this style down enough to even wear the twists outside? I need any suggestions that have helped others to master these styles.
