Braids Braids Braids til Dec '08 Challange!!

Thanks for the refresher on the rules. I've been good. Cornrows out on Monday afternoon, wash/DC/moisturize Monday nite, cornrows back in on Tuesday nite. Basically just 24hrs between out-and-in again. But on July 11th, I switched to box braids. Took me all of 8hrs to do my own head:blush:. I will be replacing individual braids as needed, but for the most part, these will be staying in 'til the end of my challenge in december. Moisturize nightly as usual, and still washing and conditioning twice per week with braids in. I think I should be OK:yep:........right?????:perplexed

oh definitly, and then some!

I'm in box braids right now but i think i'll have to switch back to cornrows in Sept in the intrest of time.

Count me in! I'm actually going to keep my braids in longer than December, I'm going to go all the way to this time next year. I've decided to get crochet braids because it will be less damaging to my hair and also easy to take out. I found the Rafri Astri type braids and some of the hair is really cute. I remember some years ago when I wore cornrow braids for 11 months my hair grew 5 inches and I was not taking care of it. I was just eating healthy and this was how much my hair grew. People could not believe that my hair grew that long. I had cut it in a short style and when I took the braids down for good, my hair was little past my shoulders. I want to achieve this same length. I will not be getting touchups during this braid challenge, just moisturising my hair everyday with my aloe vera moisturising spray, keeping scalp clean with witch hazel, the kind without alcholol and tieing it up with durag/satin cap every night as well as oiling my scalp and applying my OCT or MegTek. I hope my hair will thicken and become longer.

I searched to see if a braids challange was going on, but no such luck:perplexed

I want to keep my hair in braids for the rest of the year simply because it is very low manipulation and maintence. It is also much easier to apply my growth aids when I am wearing braids. It would be much easier to reach my goal if I wore braids, and I know the best way to keep up on that is to have a buddy or buddies involved for motivation, plain and simple:grin: We can all reach our goals! If anyone wants to join in with me, here are the rules:

-you must keep your hair in braids until December 31, 2008.
-you must moisturize everyday, NO IFS, ANDS, OR BUTS ABOUT IT!!!
-you may take 1-2 weeks after taking down one set to DC and baby your hair, then its back to the braids.
-a maximum of up to 3 weeks without braids is allowed ONLY after a relaxer.

Let's check in every week or however often you feel. Who's with me? HHG!!

Sign me up. I put in Kinky twists three days ago. I finally found someone who didn't do them too tight - I've had some pretty bad experiences in the past - loosing my edges and all that. This time I actually made them leave most of my edges out; I guess i'm better off safe than sorry.

I am using AJamericanDiva technique to maintain my hair for this period. Hopefully I will experience minimal shedding when I take them out in 6 weeks.

I'm:
  • Washing & DCing once a week with diluted conditioner and shampoo
  • Spraying my scalp daily with Surge #14 (I found a local BSS last week that had 8 bottles for $5.50 each - I bought them all)
  • I'm spraying the length of my twists with S-Curl
  • Sealing with Surge Oil #9 (The BSS had that too - Oh it smells delicious:lick:!!!!)
I'm also working out on most week days (mornings) so I simply stand in the shower and let the water run through my hair to rinse out the sweat and proceed with my SURGE - S CURL - Surge Oil routine.

Wish me luck cos I hope be able to keep them for the full six weeks. I tend to get bored easily... I'm already envitioning how I'll let them do it differently next time - and its only been 4 days.

.

Okay I got my braids in yesterday. I got cornrolls in the front and individuals in the back. I will get the cornrolls redone every two to four weeks and the individuals in the back redone every two months.

This will be my regimen:
1. Wash scalp and braids with very diluted "ORS Aloe" poo.
2. Spray scalp with "The Roots" braid spray only after pooing.
3. Spray braids with "The Roots" braid spray daily.
3. Apply MTG lightly to scalp twice a week (I needed to use this up).

what she said .. except my braids are my real hair and my cornrows arent going to last 4 weeks without being done over .. i would look awful

im soooo totally in its ridiculous!!! lol, i was thinking i was gonna do the EXACT thing today, so im really excited to see this!

At the moment I am using two braid sprays. The first one "The Roots" braid sheen & conditioner and the other is "Africa's Best" Braid Sheen Spray with Conditioner. I thought it would be helpful to you ladies if I listed them and their ingredients in case anyone is in the market for a braidspray.

The ingredients for "The Roots" Braid Sheen is:
Glycerin, Shea butter, Hydrolyzed collagen, Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil, Purified water, EDTA, Jojoba Oil, Aloe Vera, and Fragrance. ($5.99)

I have only used this for about four days. My roots feel very soft and moisturized.

The ingredients for "Africa's Best" Braid Sheen Spray is:

Water, Acetamide MEA, Hydrolyzed Hair Keratin, Panthenol, Sorbitol, Sodium Cocoyl Collagen Amino Acid, Cocoyl Sarcosine, Wheat Germ Acid, Wheat Germ Oil, Linolenic Acid, Linoleic Acid, Sulfur Polysorbate 80, Oleth-10, Jojoba Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Hydrolyzed Glycosamino-Glycans, Propylene Glycol and Nettle Extract and Amica Montana Flower, Extract and Nasturtium Officinale Extract and Rosemary Leaf Extract and Sage Leaf Extract and Methyl Paraben and Propyl Paraben, PEG 50 Shea Butter, Dimethycone, Diazolydinyl Urea, Lactic Acid, Polysorbate 20, Fragrance. ($2.99)

I bought this one mainly because of the price and the ingredients are not that bad. I think I will replace "The Roots" braid spray with this one.

Hi guy's when i joined i was already in braids - so its been around a month for me...last night i took them down, i got nearly and inch of growth...so i gues i will give my hair a break for 2 week if i can.

I might get cornrow for the two weeks then go back to braids -

At the moment i have gone into work with a semi fro...i really dont think they approve. :lachen:

I want to join this challenge but sadly I wont be able to get any braids till august because last nite I broke down and got a relaxer . I tried to get some braids after work last nite but the lady said over 200 dollars and after years of going to the dominicans I forgot how expensive other salons could be so I declined.

I am finally done with my braids. I will post in a couple of weeks. I am trying to closely follow the C & G method as well as use MN on my scalp daily. I think the MN is causing me to have headaches though. :ohwell:

I am going to keep this set until the end of September...I will probably re-braid the edges in between that time.

Very pretty!

Can I join? I just installed some yarn braids this weekend. This is 3 weeks after my relaxer. I got tired of trying to style my hair with this humid weather:perplexed. I'm loving the yarn braids, it's easy to do and cheap too because I still have a big spool of yarn that can last me for eternity:grin:.

I love the goddess braids on that site...the only down is the starting point of the goddess braids are so thick and round...yuck

Just wanted to post a quick update. I started taking my braids out a couple of days ago. I finished taking my braids out early this morning around 2am. I was too tired to wash it and do a protein treatment. I plan on doing one later today before the olympics come on. I am not sure what I am going to do with it yet. Since it's short and uneven. It has growed some. I'm not sure how much though. I plan on having individuals put back in sometime next week.

I wanna get braids but my hair is so long it's hard to find hair (human) that is long enough. Any body know and websites. I think I'd need 22-24'' or 24-26". I like at least 3-4" of loose ends.

Wow, your hair is simply beautiful!! Have you considered just braining your very onw hair without any extension at all? :yep:

Can I deep condition IN braids?

I do it all the time, but if you're not a veteran of braids, following the C&G method might be safest coz you may get matting if you do not wash off the conditioner properly.

When I DC, I apply the conditioner starting from about an inch from the base of my hair--never that first section where the braids start-- and smooth the conditioner to the ends the way you'd apply relaxer. I do a few braids at a time. Then I plait them to get them out of the way so I can concentrate on another set. I make sure to leave them hanging down instead of pinning them up because I want the conditioner not only not to drip down to my scalp and the starting point of the braids but also because the ends have the oldest hair and really should have the most conditioning. Then I put on a plastic cap and go under a dryer for 20-30 mins.

When it's time to rinse, I rinse for about 5 mins, squeezing the braids gently as the shower spray runs through my head. Then I complete the rinse with a dunk of my head in ACV solution (1/4 cup to a bucket (2 gallons?) of water, 20 drops of EO of rosemary (optional) and 20 drops of EO of lavender (optional)). While head is submerged, I massage my scalp to make sure no conditioner residue is left on my scalp. The solution further closes my hair cuticles locking in the goodness of the conditioning I just did and ensuring smoother strands.

I would like to mention that what makes me comfortable DCing is the fact that I redo my braids often enough to be able to prevent any matting, should that be a risk when one DCs with thick conditioners. If you aren't able to braid your own hair and therefore redo a few at a time...or be able to check progress of your hair to verify if this is working for you, then stick to C&G regimen for braids (www.growafrohairlong.com) as it is straightforward and has proved successful for many people.

WEll I've had mine in...so far ...geez... about 2 1/2 months I'm on my second restyle done. I've been doing Kinky twists... Its like $100 plus about $27 to buy the hair...the lady was prego last time I got it done...so I'm trying to hold off until she returns (sad, huh?) :lachen:... I really liked her a lot and once you find a good stylist you should stick w/ them, plus she had a gorgeous head of hair... (if they hair tattered, why should I let them touch mine?) ... and its all natural and she's a gorgeous Nigerian to boot... it only took 4 hrs... so she was due when she last did my hair in July... Im figuring I hold out til 2nd week of September??? Or should i try to call in earlier to see if she came back???

Oh man I wish I had seen this earlier. I did this for 16 months (the braid part and I did 1 week between braids after a relaxer, but I didn't know to moisturize everyday). I got awesome results, I think I'll join you guys at least until december and maybe longer bc these buns are getting so old

Just took out my yarn braids and my hair is so soft! I will be doing 3 weeks of deep treatments and then I will relax. After another 3 weeks I'll put in some more braids, probably latch hook braids.

I just got Senegalese twists put in. I'm in the HYH until December challenge but I'll post pics when it's done
