Black Currant Oil Supplements, Dr. Oz Says They Stop Split Ends!

I happened to catch the end of the Dr. Oz Show today. He had a special on supplements, juices, etc... under $10 that help eliminate wrinkles and some other things, but what I was most interested in is the Black Currant Oil supplements. This lady with long blond hair came up on stage and she had a lot of split ends. He said the supplements would stop that (repair, mend or something like that). I always thought cutting them was the only way to repair them.

Anyone ever hear of or try these supplements? What are your thoughts?

You're welcome Bnster. Yes thanks faithVA! I just read that link and see he also says the same thing. I'm getting some of these supplements! I want to see as my hair grows if they keep me from having to trim as often.

Ms.Tiki Borage Oil? I never heard of that either! I'm so behind LOL! I just read the skin benefits of this. Very interesting. Thanks!

Did he say that taking an internal supplement will mend split ends on hair that has already grown from your head and is already damaged? *scratches head*

...Or did he mean that the oil will improve your internal health and your hair will grow in stronger? I'm trying to clarify because if he is claiming that taking a supplement will mend already split ends, that claim is false.

I'm skeptical of anything Dr. Oz says. His advice is always a bit nutty, in my opinion. Isn't he a cardiologist by trade?

No. He didnt say it would mend the split ends you already have :nono: it is a preventative suggestion.

It'd be great if it did, my only confusion is most split ends are the result of mechanical issues: rubbing on clothes/various fabrics, combing/brushing, dryness and becoming fragile...not trying to knock it but the science doesn't quite add up to me. How would an oil do this?

Linoleic acid is an essential fatty acid that must be consumed for proper health. A lack of LA and other n-6 fatty acids in the diet causes dry hair, hair loss,[7] and poor wound healing.[8] However, achieving a deficiency in linoleic acid is nearly impossible consuming any normal diet and is thus not considered to be of clinical concern.

ETA:

Split ends sometimes occur because the protective hair oils do not reach the end of the hair shaft, causing it to split.

Cardiologist huh? And he's been talking about everything but lately.:lachen:
But I read it on faithVA's link too. Another doctor, so maybe so maybe not.

Ok, so when he said it would stop that, that's what he meant? I thought he was talking about the ones she already had after he said he could see right through them. He said it so fast and shooed the woman off the stage I didn't quite understand exactly what he said.

Black Current or Black Seed Capsules are the same. I've been taking the Black Seed Capsules for the past 4-5 months, not for split ends though. This is the first time I've heard of them being good for split ends. I'll have to check my ends and see what they look like. I use the Black Seed Oil to pre-poo with.

im currently taking black seed oil for my acne. i wonder if it will have an effect on my ends it i seal my ends with it for a few weeks

Since its suppose to help from the inside out, you would have to check your ends from the hair that hasnt sprouted yet.

I once looked for it and I realized that there are often misconceptions when looking for black seed oil. Some people refer to black seed oil when they mean BLACK CUMIN SEED (nigella sativa) oil, others when they mean BLACKCURRANT SEED (ribes nigrum) oil. They are 2 entirely different things.

Black cumin seed (nigella sativa) usually comes from Egypt and it is used as a supplement and externally for many things, it was said to be a remedy for all diseases and Cleopatra used it. If applied externally it is said to strengthen hair. Whereas Black Currant Seed (ribes nigrum) is a great supplement for Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) and it is a bit like hemp oil, in the sense that it should give the benefits of Borage oil without its controversial side effects (some people say Borage oil has a toxic component), or the benefits of Evening Primrose without its side effects (some say it is estrogenic or it interferes with their menstrual cycle). So it should be good for hair, skin and nails among other things (I take hemp oil because it is more cost effective and it benefits my skin).

They can be both beneficial, in different ways.

Yes. He also has a staff that consists of black, white, hispanic and asian women. Oprah's show (Dr.OZ) has a research team that researches the material used on the show. He shares what his team and other experts have studied.

I'm sure someone on team reads this forum. Forums like these are a gold mine for research and development teams. LHCF is not a secret to any of the industry insiders :nono:

Um...Dr. Oz's "advice" is still questionable, as was plenty of the information that was presented on Oprah Winfrey's show before she ended it. I didn't see this clip from his show myself, which is why I asked for clarification, but Dr. Oz promotes a lot of new age medicine and discusses medical topics that are completely outside of his area of expertise.

He has to keep the ratings going, so he presents "alarming" findings, such as his claims that apple juice is a dangerous drink full of arsenic :ohwell: (interview and clips from show). The FDA to Dr. Oz: Apple juice is safe. His "team" conducted an investigation that improperly measured the amount of dangerous synthetic arsenic versus harmless organic arsenic in apple juice.

Just my opinion on him, do what you feel...I take advice from all sources with a grain of salt. That includes both the FDA and a doctor who makes his millions off of sensationalism.

The capsules I'm taking now are " Black Current Seed Oil". It also provides 14-17% gamma linolenic acid -GLA and 1 gram of Black Seed Current Oil; it's 500mg.

Regarding him talking about things beyond his expertise, he often invites the related specialist to the show to actually give the advise. For example, if one of his topics is about foot health, he would have a podiatrist, etc. on the show to talk about the topic further.

He knows that he can't really give advice on something that he didn't study in detail. I watch his show daily, and this is how he's always done things.

I'm still not fully understanding how this would help prevent split ends but it doesn't seem as if he went into that on the show. I wish he had posted the information somewhere so people could examine it for themselves, especially since he gave the advice to a white woman and their texture and hair care habits are vastly different from ours.

Maybe just research the product and find out if is something you can benefit from. Good luck on your hair journey.
