I thought black hair ate grease.....and that i couldn't use products that weren't targeted to ethnic pool
People. I used to smell my white and mixed friends hair and *sigh*

-Conditioner was a trick they played on white people to get them to spend more money.

- Washing your hair weekly would make it fall out.

- Long haired girls had the "good hair gene".

- Conditioner from the drugstore was only made for whites, unless you're in the ethnic subsection of course.
- The flatter, straighter, and more lifeless your hair is from getting it done at the salon, the better.
- All conditioner made for black people is made equal, there's no differentiation to distinguish what sets certain products apart from others.
- Protein and moisture balance?!?!?!? What?! Ceramides? Is that even a word?
- Slathering 50/11 products on the hair was somehow beneficial.

You are so right! I was told that by my stylist growing up as a kid that I shouldn't wash my hair and that she needed to do it when I went every 2 weeks because she had growing hands and that no one should touch your hair because it would fall out. To be honest, I still believe that you shouldn't let random people touch your hair.

-I didn't use grease but thought oil would moisturize my hair.
-Didn't know how important it was to wear my bonnet every night
-Didn't think I had to wash my hair that much
-Didn't dc, ever!

...that it was crazy to go several months between relaxers
...that water + relaxed hair = DISASTER
...buns were lame
...was hair was too 'nappy' to grow long
...washing your hair more than once a month was weird
...that I would NEVER...EVER...go natural

I just BCed 05/17/2012

Even trying to help my family, they still think that if my hair isn't weighted down with grease that it's dry and needs "moisture". They can't get past the fact that grease is NOT moisture.

That happens to me. Someone I work with is a big believer in grease.
My hair was literally wet and she said my hair looked dry. I'm thinking in my head, just because my hair isn't greazy does not mean it is dry.
I keep my mouth shut.
Even when co-workers with less than 4 or 5 inches of broken off thin hair insist that "our hair" needs grease and will not contemplate any other view point. Again, I'm thinking to myself, obviously it hasn't been working for you.
I have learned to keep my mouth shut. It is not worth the effort.

It seems strange to me that they marvel at my hair constantly but will not let go of practices that do not work for them.
Again, I have learned to keep my mouth shut.

Congratulations on your BC! Can we see?

before my hhj:

1. I washed/conditioned/detangled every day (or every other day if I was feeling lazy)
2. My hair was relaxed every 6 months.
3. Went to bed with my hair loose every night. (never heard about wrapping or bonnets!)
4. Avoided the ethnic hair care section except to buy relaxer kits. ( I was a big fan of Frizz- Ease by John Freida)

The funny part is the fact that I never had a problem retaining length. I've been known to cut from bsl to above shoulder length to piss off a boyfriend  because I never had a problem growing out my hair. Looking back, I think it may have been the fact that I would go so long between relaxers, and lack of heat styling. I could not be bothered to blow out/ flat iron my hair unless it was immediately after a relaxer...so that only happened twice a year.

That African American hair needed and thrived with heat use.
That oil sheen spray applied to the hair just before flat ironing or curling moisturized the hair.
And many more that are already posted. :) I am shocked I had hair.
