1) shaved my head almost every 6 months because I was never happy with it and didn't know how to take care of it.

-I used the neutrelizing shampoo from the perm box as my 'regular' shampoo.

-I thought all shampoos did the same thing/were just made out of regular soap in liquid form.

-blow dried my hair with the comb attachment and curled every morning.

-washed my hair every 2 weeks, much longer if I had braids in.

- used rubber bands as ponytail holders.

-applied perm from root to tip at every application.

- left perm on at least 40 minutes so that it would 'take'.

-moisturized my hair with GREASE

-believed that only products with black people on the cover were good for my hair.

-believed that my hair was tough and could sustain anything (it kinda was)

Gurl, this is everything I would have written down. It's almost errie that many of us have similar background stories/horrors like this. How many are out there still doing these things?

What's even more scary is how many HERE are still doing these things?

  • Didn't know what stretching or transitioning meant.
  • Had never used a clarifying shampoo.
  • Had never seen my natural hair texture.
  • Used hair grease as a moisturizer and pink oil moisturizer was my bf.
  • Never attempted to flatiron my hair.
  • Didn't know that my hair had the potential to grow leaps and bounds.
  • Thought a relaxer was supposed to burn or else your hair wouldn't be straight.
  • Didn't know that a stylists opinion wasn't the final and ultimate truth.
  • Never used a heat protectant.
  • Didn't know that mainstream hair products could be used on my hair.
  • Basically knew nothing about my hair or how to take care of it.
Thank You LHCF!!!!

Girl, the sheer number of jacked up heads I see on a daily basis lets me know that it's plenty of folk doing some form of what I was doing

really? Ya think?

With thousands of members, there have to be some still actively jacking their heads up.

I washed my hair weekly with a regular shampoo
Left the conditioner on at the most for twenty minutes with no cap
Blowdried, pressed, flatironed and curled my hair every week...don't ask.
And that's pretty much all I did with the exception of a weave or braids.

  • never knew what a protein treatment was
  • never knew what a clarifying shampoo was
  • thought no other products but "black" products would work for my hair
  • let my stylist CUT not TRIM my hair with every touch up
  • combed hair one too many times a day
  • wore braids beacause i got tired of "doing (frying)" my hair everyday
  • thought braids and going to a non-caring stylist was the only way to get healthy hair :ohwell:
  • thought that i shouldnt wash my hair more than once a month
  • thought my mom was crazy because she wore a plastic cap over her hair under a wig. *though her hair was always healthy, thick and long.
  • thought mom was crazy to wear wigs anyway, her hair is gorgeous.

would still be using blowdryers everyday
would follow up by using the curling iron
would use pink oil as a moisturizer...............
thought water + hair = evil
was convinced my hair wouldnt grow past shoulder length
never thought id ever be natural

  • Didn't know about protein vs. moisture
  • Never heard of baggying
  • Had no knoweledge about home made products
  • Had no clue about clarifying shampoo
  • Didn't know about pre-poo or co-washes (life hasn't been the same since!!!:grin::grin::grin:)

  1. Never knew about strecthing relaxers
  2. washed my hair right after visiting a stylist( did not like the grease in my hair)
  3. hot curled my hair every other day
  4. never deep conditioned

Before LHCF

I never moisturized.
I never heard of a clarifying shampoo.
I never heard of stretching relaxers.
I never pre pooed.
I relaxed at 6 weeks.

I.....

-Never Clarified my Hair
-Didn't pay ANY attention to the stuff in my products that my hair didn't like (cones, mineral oil)
-Never could get past shoulder length
-Relaxed every 6 weeks
-Used a Curling Iron (Haven't used a curling iron since I joined)

1. I never paid attention to my ends
2. Did not use oil to seal my moisturizer
3. Combed (still a little bit, but working on it)
4. Thought only expensive products were good for my hair--loving creme of nature, s-curl and Dominican products--will try Vo5 and Suave at a later time.
5. Did not know "real" growth aids existed. Still waiting on my BT.
6. Did not think it was possible to stretch relaxers without my hair looking like a mess.

1. Never did a protein treatment before. Ever. In life.
2. Flat ironed several times a week, sometimes every day if I worked out every nite.
3. Used only oil to moisturize my hair.
4. Believed everything my stylist said as the hard fast law.
5. Relaxed every 4 weeks (sides and back more often).
6. Let my relaxer stay on until it burned. (madness......!)

Thats all I can think of right now.... my poor hair. :(

  • Never deep conditioned
  • Never took vitamins
  • Never moisterized my hair
  • Never knew another way to wrap my hair w/o my sides being tender ***(thank you Lord for the cross wrap)

I never stretched relaxers... i relaxed every 5 weeks!
I never used honey or olive oil in my conditioners
I never heard of the baggy method

....didn't know I had naturally curly hair and had never worn any part of my hair airdried and loose. I am wearing an airdried loose ponytail to work for the first time EVAH today. My (caucasian) secretary asked me if it was a clip in or a weave.:perplexed . I said, no this is my hair. I have been wearing my buns for so long that "they" are all in shock...!

I...
Let people trim off all my progress at every relaxer.

Didn't know about protein/ moisture balance and wonder why my hair felt so hard after using Keraphix.

Let my mom leave the relaxer on way to long !!!
Let my mom pull the relaxer all through out my hair.

Never moistureized regular or sometime not at all:eek:

Let stylist(not going to say any names) put bonding glue in my hair on the regular while in high school.

Wondered why my hair was not thick and it was broke off.

Rarely DC'ed-maybe 4 times out the year!!

Went from weave to braids or braids to weave just for convience.

Thought my hair could on grow to shoulder length and that's it.
To make a long story short... I abused the HELL out of my hair.

Before LHCF I.....

1. would go days and even weeks without washing my hair
2. never heard of pre-pooing, con washing
3. never new I had to balance moisture/protein
4. didn't know you could make your own hair care products
5. never heard of essential oils

1. Never heard of pre-poo
2. Went weeks without washing
3. Never did protective styles
4. Touched up faithfully every 4-6 weeks
5. Thought that If I clipped my ends after every touch up I would achieve maximum growth.

I am so glad I saw the light:nono:

Before LHCF, I...

...had some seriously brittle, dry, overprocessed, & breaking hair. I thought all moisturizers were the same and didn't know to hunt for one that would work on my hair.

...thought of my hair as something to hold extensions & falls in.

...didn't know anything about moisture/protein balance.

...knew nothing about stretching between relaxers.

...hated new growth. It was just something else for me to flat iron within an inch of its life.

...hated how my hair looked 2 weeks after a relaxer. Now I can't wait until two weeks after when it fluffs up again.

...didn't know about baggying & protective styles. My ends are no longer crunchy.

...didn't know about pre-poo'ing. Mmmmmm.... coconut milk.

...didn't know about heat caps.

...never heard of Amla oil. I can't live without it now!!

...never clarified. I always thought it'd "strip the perm" outta my head. :perplexed

...didn't know that heat-protecting serums worked on my hair.

...used to think that when I broke teeth out of my comb and didn't cry, I was the ish. Now, if I hear one single little eensy pop while gently combing my hair, I stop and examine the hairs in my comb in a panic. :lachen:

...never got compliments on my hair.
