So, I am the only one who has to maintain a strict regimen and still hope and pray for growth. 3" - 4" of hair growth a year is sad.

WELL HELL AT LEAST YOU'RE GROWING!! SOME PEOPLE CANT EVEN GET THERE!!
:bighug:

I am an effortless grower. My hair has gone on autopilot all by her lonesome. I still care for her though :-D

I am more of an effortless grower. But in the past I have caused damage with heat, my hair would still grow and I would still retain, but my hair was not in the condition I wanted. That being said, my enemy with growing my hair is time. I am so impatient.

I work for it, in the sense that I now leave it alone.

My hair hates heat, my hair hates chemicals, if I stay away from those two things my hair grows (standard rate) and retains.

My regimen changes seasonally. Now I'm co-washing daily or every other day, and using leave in conditioner. Some braid outs but a lot of Wash and Go's.

As long as i moisturize everyday, do my bi-weekly protein deep conditioning, and PS my hair grows and i retain.

Great questions OP!

I guess I'm lucky, because my strands are thick and strong (even though they are super coarse). I don't use a daily moisturizer, I don't deep condition, I don't protective style, co-wash, baggy, steam, stretch relaxers, or anything. Just wash every couple of days, lye relaxer every 8 weeks, and stay away from direct heat.

I have to work to retain every inch of my growth. Growing isn't a problem. Only retention. I barely manipulate my hair. I've worn wigs and braid styles for almost 3 years yet I still am not at any good length.

I would say that I'm a relatively effortless grower and I think my retention is pretty good too. I used to relax, dye, and comb and brush my hair multiple times a day (I remember combing my hair just because I was bored) and sleep with it uncovered and wear it down most of the time but I still had hair that was bra strap to MBL.

That was until I decided to shampoo my relaxed dyed hair daily without using conditioner or any moisturizer; I remember my hair breaking off in clumps. :giggle: I had to get it cut to shoulder length but it still grew back to bra strap again within several months. I used to really torture my hair but it still grew. :nono: My hair strands are very thick and strong though. My hair can take a bit of abuse before falling out.

Even now all I do is use regular conditioner as a leave in, finger comb, and keep my hair up as much as possble and my hair is thriving and is the longest it has ever been. The secret to getting my hair to grow is pretty much doing nothing to it. Just literally wash and go. No special vitamins, diet, daily moisturizing, deep treatments, etc. for me.

My hair thrives in warm weather, when it is summer time my hair grows like a weed but in the winter time I have to seriously focus on my hair just to get average growth.

ETA: My friend's hair is darn near indestructible (she has thick individual strands ). She has done everything to her hair, form using straight up peroxide to change the color (8th grade), to relaxing and coloring her hair fire engine red within the same week ! If I did that to my hair I would be bald for the rest of my life, but she is able to maintain at least SL hair.

I'm an effortless grower. I'm too inconsistent for growth aids of any kind. I hardly use growth aids, get lazy with my regimen and my hair still manages to grow. I just let my hair do its thing. As long as I keep my ends moisturized, it's smooth sailing for me.

My hair grows at a snail pace and I have to do protective styling or else I lose what little I've gained. I have very dry, fine cottony hair. My sister's hair is thicker and 'silkier' and she can do anything to her hair like add color, puffs everyday and still retain her growth. Weirdly enough it was almost the opposite when we were relaxed.

:lachen:I did that pouring straight peroxide in my hair for color thing when I was in highschool. It made a BEAUTIFUL color and my hair was fine.

My mom still talks about how beautiful my hair was with that color. If she had known back then, how I got it, she would have been MAD! LOL

UGH! I used to try so hard to color my hair with peroxide and my hair wouldn't lighten for NOTHING! Am I crazy if I try it again in the future? lol.....yeah probably...grr guess i'll pay $90 again for highlights one day

i'm an effortless grower and retainer-er. :look: whateva, you know what i mean.

i would trade my effortless growing and retaining with someone who is slim and in shape effortlessly.

we all have our advantages.

eta: although i haven't noticed a change in my growth or retention, i do like caring for my hair now. its much easier to handle now that i know conditioner is not an option :look: i like how moisturized my hair is and how easy it detangles. before lhcf, i had a hard time with my hair. i didn't wash it regularly, so my scalp hurt sometimes, and i didn't know i HAD to use conditioner. :look: just like when you take a bath, you use soap but you may not put on lotion afterwards? well i thought all i had to do was shampoo and the conditioner was optional. :nono: i didn't moisturize it the way i was taught, and i would rip combs/brushes through when i'd attempt to detangle, with no product in my hair at all, or some pink lotion. i remember that horrible snapping and crackling sound.

it wasn't all that great to have long hair but struggle with it like that. ♥

Peroxide isn't going to cut it. You'll need some bleach. I used it to lighten my ends so that I could dye them pink. It worked great and my hair didn't break. I might do it again once I trim away the already colored ends.

Same
Even though i think that my constant battle to be smaller benefits my hair. I workout and try to eat healthy now, and also i take a protein shake every day, not for hair purposes but for weight loss.

Anywaym even before i started with that my hair growed and i retained the lenght pretty much doing nothing.

I'm an effortless grower and retainer(I think) as long as I don't abuse heat. My hair has always been long and I only washed during touchups or unless my mom forced me too. It wasn't until I stated thinking I was cute and flat ironing every 3 days (only using herbal oil as a leave in) that my hair started breaking off which is when I cut to the length in my siggy.....but I voted in between....just because my hair was growing long doesn't mean it was the healthiest. My hair feels better than ever now that I actually take care of it.

wow your story sounds just like mine except my hair broke off with me flatironing multiple time a day. :nono: i started with bsl hair and didn't notice it was breaking until it was too late, and thats when i did my first bc. :nono:  i can laugh about it now. i don't know any hair that can withstand flatironing every day. i've seen some sizzled up hair on white girls. ♥

My hair grows long no problem without any extra effort. However. I had breakage so it would be long on one side n the other side was brittle

No, you're not alone.

I shampoo, porosity control, protein treatments, deep condition, moisturize, cover at night, sometimes protective style, try to live a healthy lifestyle, vitamins, protein shakes, water, don't use heat, natural, trim...and I'll be lucky if my hair grows more than 3 inches a year or past 6 inches total.

Oh, to answer to the question, I have to work for growth, but no matter how good I treat my hair, growth isn't guaranteed. But breakage is. :)

My hair grows about 1/3 inch per month and likes to break at any given opportunity. I have to work hard for my hair.

It's easy for me to retain up until about apl. After that, I'm fighting for every inch.

I woulda never thought it.

I 'm fighting what seems like a useless fight. My hair was longer when I was relaxed but I'm not going that route again. Oh well!!

I'm an effortless grower...my hair grows and had almost reached WL w/o proper care (just throwing on a wig)...

BUT

even though it grows...its thin...so I have to WORK for thickness

Effortless grower, thank God!
I still haven't learned to detangle gently, and when I used to do "touch ups" from root to tip, I still stayed between apl and mbl.

Same!! Or at least it's seeming that way :ohwell:. I always stayed between SL and APL when I was relaxed, washing my hair once a month or so, and using the curling iron almost daily. I'm full APL now as a natural and my hair in the back is between APL and BSB. It seems that these last 1-2 in. to BSB is going to be hell to get.
