Ok Ladies, you've all inspired me! And rather quickly I might add! Below is my first true protective style that will get me beyond SL . I just went in the bathroom and dug up an old hair accessory that I bought years ago and didn't have enough hair to use it.

And thanks Sistaslick for the idea about the Chinese bun (your fotki). I did that one just before I used this accessory. My DBF liked the chinese bun, but he thought it will look even better when I have more hair. His favorite bun to date is the donut, which had been the only one I knew how to do before viewing your albums.

Thanks!

That is very cute. I feel in love with that bun but never tried it for some reason. I need to give it whirl. But your hair is very pretty like this.

I am not sure if the other ladies mentioned that you must be careful with the bun. Try not to put it in the same place. You also need to let your hair rest from the stress off being pulled back in the bun all the time. The modified version here would be perfect for letting your hair rest somewhat from the bun. (and keeping it up at the same time.) Happy Growing!!

Gracias Letitia! What you said was what I was thinking when I went and dug up the hair pin. Until now, I had been doing the donut bun with the satin band holding my hair in place. It seemed my ends looked crazy every night I'd take it down, so that's why I was concerned about always bunning (thus my original desire to roller set). At any rate, I will definately take it into account to move the bun around and try not to use elastics/scrunchies all the time either. I guess keeping it in the same place can eventually do the same thing wrapping has been doing to my po hair! :(

Well, thanks! I guess it just feels like I'm staying still. I guess after my bout with transitioning, then a MAJOR trim, I thought, "ohh no, I've thrown 10 months of progress down the drain! I guess from July until now, I am starting to feel like things are getting back on track.

On another note, the bun I just posted was AFTER I used the Organics Shea Butter moisterizer and sealed with my hot six knock off. Thus the shine.

Yes, that shine is blinding for real!! giggles. I love it.

**Off Subject....I like how you made your measuring T-shirt.*
Okay...I am off to find the tutorial on this bun again. You hooked it up!

Thanks Girl! Yeah, I got ghetto with my shirt and pulled out a sharpie and measuring tape. It at least gives me insight as to how far I am past SL.

You did a good job. That is a great measuring tool. I asked the hubby to work on one for me. lol.

I use either Surge Ultra Max or Profective Healthy Ends on the ends before buning or french roll.

Do you contribute your growth to these protective styling??

P.S. YOU have beauuuutiful hair an inspiration for the ones trying to get to apl.

I know you're trying not to be a PJ, but maybe you should invest in a couple of good vitamins (1 multi and 1 hair, skin and nails vitamins.) I have been having an inch of new growth a month! I believe it's due not only to wearing my hair in protective styles, but also my vitamin supplements.

BTW, my hair was barely APL when I started, and now I'm an 1 1/2 inches away from BSL.

Girl, I do take vitamin... I've always taken a women's mutlivit, but have since added a hair and nail vit and sometimes use ground flaxseed. I don't think it's a deficiency of vitamin for me. I've been on a healthier lifestyle kick for the past 2.5 years and take vitamin daily as well as drink lots and lots of H2O. But thanks for the idea. :)

ETA: I am truly convinced it's like you guys have been saying about the protective styling. The ONLY 2 things that had been mentioned that I haven't been doing consistantly are protective styling and really moisterizing. I've been "toying" with every dang on thing that's mentioned on the boards, so I was trying braid outs, CW, cross wraps, dominican blowouts, you name it! I've even done some bunning, but not with consistancy. More like 15-25% of the time in bun/pony. That has changed as of today.

I also started with sholder lenght hair and now I am sitting right on bs lenght. The things that helped were
1. BAGGY METHOD
2. MTG
3. Puritan Pride Biotin/Puritan Pride Mega hair vitamines
4. Evoo
5. Co washes
You can take a look at my fotki, also consitency is key. Hope this helps :)

Thank you:)

Yes, I wear my hair up 90% of the time.
Plus I always focus on my ends.

Thanks so much! YOUR hair is beautiful! I'm doing 1-3 on your list now and will add the EVOO. When do you use EVOO? Pre-poo?

Co washes were not my friend when I was trying them before. It seems the more I wet my hair, the more problems I have with shedding during the week.

 I have seriously been sleeping on your hair. Greta progress!

I started with SL hair and am at BSL now. I was like you...I started off transitioning and then found this board.

I don't use protective styles at all, but it looks like I'm in the minority on that one. Anyway, good luck, and you have made some great progress!

 Hi Lauren! I met you at the Atlanta meeting in July! You're hair is GREAT girl! I had no idea yous started at SL. What are your secrets since you don't do protective stlying? I'm going to check out your fotki!

Thanks!

That's right, I did meet you! :D Forgive me, my memory's bad right now.;)

As far as growing my hair, I did rollersets. I used almost no heat on my ends, and when I didn't want to wear my hair down, I would generally pin it up like someone suggested a few pages back. When I did flat-iron, I used plenty of heat protectant. Also, I used Mane and Tail Super Moisturizing Conditioner as a leave-in, and I think that helped strengthen (it has protein).

I think rollersets made the difference. They got my hair smooth and bouncy without direct heat. I think if I had kept on curling and flat-ironing my ends regularly like I was before I found the board, I'd still be at SL.

hey, i started with dry broken down damaged fried hair in January 2005

by around April 2006 my hair was brastrap length..i'm now about an inch away from midback and 3-5 inches from waistlength...

its all about airdying...it REALLY IS! for my hair type is strong yet delicate when takin the p*ss with it lol. the less i use heat the more tolerant of heat it gets. i expect that when i reach my ultimate goal of hipbone, that if i wanted i could use heat every 2 weeks and retain that length.I had to learn the hard way about products, and i discovered that Keracare was made for my hair and i preach about it to whoever asks why my hair is healthy and long.

Vitamins play a massive part. i doubt i would be nr midback without the vits.

Oils have been good to me recently. The older my ends r the more they respond to the power of oils (coconut and amla are my faves). Pre-pooing b4 washing one one of the best things i've done for my hair, and so is clipped under buns {using bobby pins - small} and cutting split ends individually {with expensive shears}. Washing and conditioning often is good when your hair is around shoulder length, but PERSONALLY the longer my hair gets the less it responds to frequent washes. I wash every 10-14 days now and my hair is very strong and moisturized because of how oily it becomes over that period of time.

I spray filtered water on my hair daily, i scrunch in some KC oil moisturizer and then scrunch in some coconut oil and pin under in a loose bun and voila. sometimes i take it down for bed, but cos its so loose i dont bother. OH YEH i also comb every 10-14 days! lol i know it sounds ridiculous but it works and i dont really get many tangles due to a good relaxer and good upkeep :)

I guess if I can make it to Jan 1 with APL hair, I'll add the roller sets to my routine. How often do you relax? Just curious.

Thanks again girl!

Thanks Candy C and Silkynaps! You ladies are ALL inspirational! Now I'm REALLY gonna be addicted to hair albums :)

Wow Candy_C! Talk about INSPIRATION! I'm viewing your fotki now and girl if I can only be 1/2 as successful. All of you have given phenomenal tips! I think with the exception of Lauren, it sounds like you all do protective styles most of the time. Lauren seemed to have gotten great success with roller sets (which I thought was protective until yall corrected me here  ).

Bottom line, you guys certainly prove that with a lil TLC I have hope to make it past this in between stage of SL! I guess I made it past the in between stage of chin length way back when and that was W/O LHCF, I'm sure I can do this even faster with you ladies at LHCF! Thanks, Thanks, and oh yeah, THANKS!

I started with a Halle cut. I stopped going to my beautician early in 2003, In December 2003 I had to cut off all my growth again because of another stylist ruining it. Since then I do everything myself.

I handle it gently because I am tenderheaded and have always worn it up since growing it out because I like the polished look of "updos."

Softresses

I was about 3" from BSL before I cut my hair, and I started at shoulder length. It took me about a yr to get healthy hair again after destroying it for so long and then a yr of activley growing it out.

Gracias ladies!

I started out with damaged, above shoulder length hair, but it took me longer than a year to get to bra strap. My hair just grows really slooooooowly. Your regimen sounds good. I would just echo the other ladies in saying that protective styling really made a difference for me. That and oiling my ends with jojoba oil every night, and minimal heat/manipulation.

I gotta go find jojoba oil! Everyone has been singing it's praises  .

Ladies, it's been 3 days now that I've been protective styling! Let's hope I can keep it up :)
