Anyone here with type 4b hair with length to it???

Everyone seem to post pics of soft wavy hair that is any type but a 4b. Not hating on those sistas but that hair is easier to grow long! When you see people with hair to the bra strap or longer, it's a 3 something or a 4a, not the kinky kinky stuff!
smirk.gif
Not that it's never seen, but it's rare. Our hair is dry, wirey and breaks easily. What moisturizers work best for folks with the nappy stuff????
Is washing once and twice a week o.k. although it's drying to hair that is already prone to be dry?
confused.gif
Or, should I just condition wash 2 times a week and shampoo biweekly??

I don't know. I know women on NP.com have members with 4b long hair with albums, but I think when hair is long regardless of what type it is, it just looks different than it's shorter equivalent.

You may have seen 4b hair but its long so it may look different. But then again I might be wrong.

A good book to look at which has great pictures of long 4b hair as well as 4a and 3ish hair is Pamela Ferrell's "Let's talk hair" its chock loaded with some very good pictures.

myspice, I'm definitely feelin you on that, but I'm a 4b (at least I think I am) and I'm going to do everything I can to have this stuff down my back. When I do, I'll definitely post pics and u should too. We'll set it off!!!

What's this thread doing on the OT board?

This forum is a great resource for type 4s who want to grow long hair. Check out a similar thread on the hair board called "Type 4 not wavy straight nappy". You should search for threads specifically asking opinions from type 4s.

I prefer to wash and deep condition once every 1-2 weeks with minimal or no manipulation to my hair in between washes. I bun it and leave it alone to grow. (Multiple washes weekly were a hassle, and I was breaking my hair.)

Lately I've used Elucence MB conditioner and Salerm 21 leave in to moisturize. Putting vaseline on my damp ends after washing and conditioning but before making the bun sealed in moisture.

Enjoy the reading!!!

Tbird, that's my plan! I just cut my relaxed ends and I plan to grow some hair now! I'll gladly post pics when I start making progress!!!!
Thanks for your reply

megonw, I'm new to this board and still tryin' to figure stuff out. After I posted, I said "darn, I posted it on the OT board" But, too late now!

Thanks for the reply, I'll look for that thread. Are you a 4b and how long is your hair?

Myspice, I have kinky, kinky, nappy 4b hair and I love it! I've made great hair growth and health progress since coming to this board. One very important thing I've learned since I started my regimen is that I needed to wash my hair more often, like every 3 days. It keeps my hair moisturized at all times. That and staying away from heat has really made a difference for me!

Edited to say:

I have grown my hair long in the past - brastrap length - but it was not healthy hair. The only reason I can think of to account for the growth was I decided to do daily washing of my hair for a while (did daily heat & frying too!)for no reason. It had to be all that moisture!

skegeesmb, Nice hair! Looks very healthy and you may be right about the longer hair appearing to not be a 4b.
Although, I think I can spot the kinky stuff when I see it!
You know, one kinky to another....

My hair has been long in the past and I have some real nappy locks

I think anyone can achieve great length, with the proper routine

My hair type is DEFINATELY a 4b, with a TINY biy of 4a mixed in, but my hair gets NAPPY!!! Especially in the crown area. Im not natural, Im relaxed and my hair has a little bit of length to it.

Thanks, Isis, your hair is SO gorgeous and thick, Ive always admired your hair.

Myspice:

I have very dry 4b hair and I know exactly what your saying. I currently relax my hair. I have to relax every 5-6 weeks, by that time I'm struggling! But, to tame my hair, I use Smooth N' Shine's conditioning gel to hold my hair and Profectiv's Mega growth Anti-breakage strengthener and smooth it in from root to end. My hair is growing better than ever, not as fast as the sista's with a different hair type, but it's growing. I condition wash my hair about every 3 days to keep it from getting too dry, and I wash with shampoo once a week.

i'm 4a/b (about a dead even tie if ya ask me) and YES you can get ALOT of length from it. ( i didnt notice you say if you were relaxed or natural
wink.gif
) Having 4b hair has nothing to do with it, it doesnt matter if youre natural or relaxed.. your hair will grow ALOT. the only thing you have to do is retain what you grow
wink.gif
i've notice plenty of type 1's that need a good pair of scissors taken to their damaged hair, so that is just not true about hairtype and growth

That's pretty much what I'm trying to do too. My hair gets dry easily, I realised con washes were not for me, because I don't want to detangle that often. Between washing and deep conditionig once a week, I keep my hair moist by spraying it with braid spray a few times a day, at night I use a combo of profectiv breakfree and mango butter, sometimes I add shea butter too. I put it mostly on my ends.

I have 4a/4b hair mostly 4b and I believe that you can grow long hair. Actually I'm on a quest right now to grow it long. I'm relaxed and I agree with Jainygirl, the key is to retain what you grow.

Myspice, Im 4b with a tiny bit of 4a. I think its very much to do with education and finding out whats right for you. My family members have 4a hair and their hair always grew very long and mine didnt. I didnt ever think that I could have long hair becasue I wasnt born with it and they were. I cut my hair really short (like Halle Berry) 2.5 years ago and decided to grow it back, now that Im educated, it grows and grows. My hair is now way longer than any of my family and friends hair due to the fact that I now take care of mine, but their laziness and uninterest has lead to abuse and damage. I wash once every 2 weeks unlike most ladies here, that works for me but perhaps may not work for others. You have to find whats right for you...

Corbins:
Thanks for your reply! That sounds like a realistic regimine for my hair type. I understand what people are saying when they recommend washing more often and putting some sort of sealer on your hair to trap the moisture in But......
Right now, I'm in braids. I did the BC after talking about it for 4 yrs. I just did it 2 wks. ago so I haven't gotten the chance to embrace my new natural hair. I got it braided the day I cut it.I can't wait to see what my hair is like with a healthy hair care regimine!

Jainygirl;
I hear ya girl...I'm natural as of 2 wks. ago. Just did the BC so I'm down to the nappy roots!

About 2 inches worth. I'm in braids as the 1st step to my hair journey.
Can't wait to meet my goals!

Bettydavis;
WOW! Nice hair! I like the pic with the 2 puffs.... you rock rough and tough with those afro puffs...

(it's a song, had to say it).
I can't wait til my hair gets to be that length! I hope I can keep it natural for that long. How long have you been natural?
Keep up the good work! You know what works best for your hair!
These pics are so inspirational. They give me something to look forward to!

ricamorena03;
Your hair looks good! I also agree that retaining your ends is how to achieve growth. That what my inquiry was about...the best way to retain ends on our hair type.
Thanks!

Hi lonei

I have the Halle Berry cut now and I can only hope I can get some growth like yours. What is your regimen? What products do you use?

I totally agree with Jainygirl and Lonei. 4b hair doesn't mean anything except the hair type. It can grow as long as you want it to. Just look at their hair - they know what they are talking about.

Hi Neen, I wash my hair once every 2 weeks with motions products. I rollerset with motions leave in and IC Polisher. When its dry I grease the scalp with ORS Carrot Oil and spray with ORS Olive Oil sheen and pin the curls to my head. This is my protective style for 2 weeks until wash day.

Re: Anyone here with type 4b hair with length to i

Check out Cathy Howse's books. I met her at a Black Expo and she looked like she had about 2 months of new growth and I'm pretty sure she's a 4b.
