And so begins my loc'd journey (PIC HEAVY)

Saga

The Generous Queen
I made the decision to loc my hair in September. Of course, just because I had a desire didn't mean I was prepared to take the plunge. I invested in the proper products, tools, and information before finally doing the deed. I spent the last few months enjoying my loose natural hair as much as possible. Trying new things, achieving different styles, and reaching milestones.

Now, since this year began me and my hair have experienced many firsts liiiike:

And of course, the first time I was able to swing my fro!

Now, it is time to begin a new journey. After months of research, 6 hours of labor, I finally gave birth to my beautiful starter locs. Ladies, I introduce to you my very first set of locs!

I started them with finger coils, with Taliah Waajid Loc It Up Gel and Hot Six Oil. I sectioned my hair and made my parts as neat as I could. They're not all the same size, but for most part I was pretty consistent. Can't wait to see how they look when they finally mature! (I know it wont take long, my hair has attempted to loc up on me without my approval numerous times). I will re-twist once a month, wash every 7-10 days, and keep them from getting dry with oil. I'll probably be around here a lot less, since I want to take time off from being "Hair obsessed."

My locs were born on Oct 22, 2011!

I love this thread. Congratulations!!!! You have beautiful hair and i can't wait to see updates over the coming year.

Happy belated birthday, locs! Good luck on your new adventure. So exciting. You should check out the Sisters with Loc'd Hair group. :poke:

Should u wash every 7-10 days? The locd naturals I know wash every 3-4 weeks. Just asking.

Different strokes for different folks
I know some loc'd folks that wash every 3 days *shrugs*

Many locticians will say that u shouldn't wash your hair to help the process go faster or whatever. From the research I've done, it doesn't effect the speed of locs and can actually be counter productive (having a funky scalp and unnecessary build up.) I personally think it's necessary to wash your scalp regularly because...well...it's apart of your body. Some people probably do it once a month because that's how often they re-twist, and they don't want to mess up the neat look. PErsonally, I plan to wear a weaving net/cap on my head so that it doesn't disturb the shape of the locs.

You can wash locs as much as you like. Some people also avoid washing braid extensions and weaves - this is personal preference but IMO clean hair/scalp is always better.

Thank you so much for doing your homework

Congrats and keep us updated.

I hope it goes well for you. I always think about doing it. Please continue posting pics of your progress.

Congrats on your locs! I recently crossed over and started my loc journey back in March and boi did I go throught some stages! LOL But that's part of the process.

Some loctitians will say not to wash your hair for months but I beg to differ. I washed my hair two weeks after my starter locs. I used a stocking/wave cap and made sure not to manipulate to much to unravel the hair and retwisted and was good to go. As a matter of fact, I think it has helped my process.

There a quite a few ladies here on the board that has loc'd their hair and can help you when you feel as though things aren't going as seems. I've been away from the board for months but now I'm back. I'll be posting soon, hopefully we can be an inspiration for each other as we brace our new process!
