Adverse effects from steamer (Youtube)

I was searching youtube reviews for hair steamers and I came across this video, "Beware-Hair Steamers"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wx3uAScPyuA&feature=related

She states that she used it too often. Her hair fell out and her scalp is raw. I had no idea something like this could happen. I've only heard of burns from the steamer spewing hot water instead of steam.

If this has already been posted, sorry!!

ETA: I read some of the comments on the video and a couple people said it made her eczema worse. Has anyone else experienced that? I have seborritis dermatitis (spelling?) but it hasn't flared up in a while. Could steam make it worse?

What she described sounded like an allergic reaction, perhaps it was the conditioner...or just something elese...and she said she already had scalp issues. Still, it's very interesting.

I find it difficult to believe that is was the steam. It may be a combination of things.

I am with you Coffee on this one. You can encounter steam every day just taking a shower, I too find it hard to believe a steamer would cause you to develop the scalp issues she was describing.

I just hope she get better and find out what the root of her scalp issues are.

I watched this video and I doubt IMHO that its an issue from the STEAMER alone.

Even based on the comments, most seem to agree that the steamer is NOT the issue. In the comments she mentions a wheat allergy, eczema and it sounds a number of issues. She was also using WEN which she seemed to have problems with.

SMH. Sorry to hear she is having issues.

I haven't used my steamer in months, mainly due to laziness. However, towards the end of it's use, I noticed that the steam would get extremely hot where I could no longer steam my hair without having a plastic cap on because it was so uncomfortable and to prevent burns. I was only using it once a week. Maybe it has to do with the brand of steamer and/or how it's used.:perplexed

I had a coworker that said that wen made her hair come out. I didn't know how much hair came out till she showed me a picture of the wad and it was the size of a small animal!!

Plus she was steaming that stuff right into her scalp. I'm not surprised.

Yesterday I couldn't see the link so didn't watch it. So finally did today. And I think it was more a product issue than the steamer. If her scalp is like mine, if I use the steamer with thick conditioner the conditioner clings to my scalp and I can't get that stuff off. I think if she steamed with just water or oil she would have been fine.

Now the huetiful does get hot towards the end but that's just because by then the hair has been infused with hot water so the steam has soaked all the way through and that can be hot. But its only the last 1 or 2 minutes.
