Yes, moisture is key and so is staying away from heat. In fact, I wish I could find a way to give my hair sheen for long lasting periods of time. I expected my 'fro to naturally be dry, but Afrosheen doesn't work for me! LOL

It works for everyone else in my family but me. So now I'm still using the sheen spray I used when I was relaxed! LOL

Otherwise, I've been enjoying con washing my hair as often as I like! I feel so freaking free right now. I can get my hair wet at will!!

Oh, and back to you because I rambled (LOL), what length are you starting at and what's your goal? /images/graemlins/grin.gif

[/ QUOTE ]

For sheen...have you tried apple cider vinegar rinses? They are wonderful for bringing sheen to your hair...especially with all of the conditioner washes that you do. I don't even use shampoo anymore, and I credit the ACVs for bringing me all sorts of "your hair is so shiny" compliments.

Keep cheerleading. I love your spirit!

Ok, then I'll just anxiously wait to hear how everything goes! LOL

And I can't say that I'm too interested in sleeping in a plastic cap. I've been enjoying ignoring my hair and letting it do its own thing, but when it gets 3 or more inches, I probably will try different methods to keep it growing. Thanks for the tips. /images/graemlins/smile.gif

Great! I didn't go from almost bra-strap straight to a TWA, so I can imagine the courage it took fo ryou to do that. I just cut my half of my relaxed hair off, then about 3 months later I cut off the rest and that was drastic enough! LOL

It amazes me how many of us are cutting our old relaxed hair off all over the world. It's like a mini revolution of sorts! /images/graemlins/grin.gif

And you have a good length of natural hair already! I wish you had an album, but anyways, happy growing and I can't wait to see how we all end up. Think about it, a year from now, your hair when stretched could touch your sholders! /images/graemlins/trampoline.gif

After seeing one of our sisters (Jaineygirl, I hope I got her name right) courageously undertake the BC, I had to ask you all how you were doing!

Are any of you closer to your goal?

I can't wait to post an update to my album so you can see the difference a month can make. :-)

Hiya
I'm a 4a with a 2" TWA been natural since 97' finally decided to calm my scissor happy butt down for a while and let my hair grow. Looking forward to growing with ya.

Hi Xerxes /images/graemlins/wave.gif

Hey wait for me!!!! /images/graemlins/trampoline.gif I'm doing great. Today when i was driving i looked in the rearview mirror and my hair is sooooo jet black without the relaxer in it. I love it!! When the sunlight hit my twa the sheen was like WHOA /images/graemlins/grin.gif I have to say that i'm totally spoiled now and wonder if i'll trim over the next few months to keep my twa for a minute.... decisions, decisions. How is everyone else doing?? -- jainygirl

LOL!!

Hey Jainygirl!! /images/graemlins/clap.gif

I won't ever stop clapping for you! LOL

I know exactly how you feel about the TWA when it's at its shortest. I love that look so much. Especially when I had it after it was first edged up and shaved down just right.

Then I started looking at some of the other natural girls' albums and I just couldn't wait to be able to twist my hair, so I officially decided not to trim my fro anymore. I still have a short TWA, but after a couple of months I should be able to twist something! LOL

Enjoy every moment of this! What I love is that I can do whatever I want with my hair and it takes less than a minute to style it! I can't ever see myself relaxing my hair again.

Also, the coolest thing is that right away, everyone's attention is focused in on your face and even you start to realize how great your bone structure is and how large your eyes are!

You basically fall in love with yourself all over agin, but it's deeper because you're finally enjoying who you are naturally. You're not fighting your hair, you're in harmony with it. /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

This is a nice way of putting it /images/graemlins/smile.gif You all are almost making me wish that I had BC'd instead of just wearing braids for a year and letting loose /images/graemlins/spinning.gif

As long as you're happy with your results, that's what matters most.

People like myself just weren't meant to transition for a long period of time. I lack the patience and the desire to struggle with a ton of newgrowth and old relaxed ends. And considering how short I cut my hair, I should have only grown my relaxed hair out for no longer than a month! LOL

How did you handle being natural right away with about 6 inches of virgin hair? Just the idea of starting off with a 6 inch 'fro scares me a little. :-)

You are so right Xerxes!! /images/graemlins/smile.gif Today people commented on my eyes and that my twa just "matched me". I know that it may be very different when i go to work this weekend but today i didnt get one person giving me a negative comment at school or when i picked up my son from the bus stop. Everyone has been cool. I told my hubby it was so weird because i didnt really know what to expect. I really like it and i think it shows because people are picking up on the positive vibe and throwing positive words at me /images/graemlins/smile.gif

I know i've mentioned it before, but i really love that i'm just jumping in the shower and deciding on a whim to shampoo or no poo. It's really cool to not have to make a dang session out of it. I need my twa to last a minute so i can really enjoy this convenience /images/graemlins/smirk.gif.

Anyone else planning on no heat or dyes? I seriously dont want to use any heat or dyes. I think my hair will wuv me for it later. I just want to see what everyone elses plans are for their twas. TIA ------- and once again,"4B TWAS UNITE!!!" /images/graemlins/bouncy.gif -- jainygirl

ETA: Xerxes, i just realized that you are doing no heat as well /images/graemlins/smile.gif

It was really weird, but it eventually felt good to get back to my natural kinks (I got my first perm when I was a freshman in college). I basically started with braidouts until my hair was long enough to just rock puffs and then later twists and twist outs. It took me a while to get used to it, but I definitely ended up liking myself and my kinks more than I ever did when I was relaxed /images/graemlins/grin.gif

All of these hair typing threads are making me feel like a bloody freak with my frizz on top and coils in the back. /images/graemlins/frown.gif

I am used to being a misfit but I have my rare moments and this is one of them...

LOL!!

Well Jainy, right now, it would be a bit absurd for me to put heat on my TWA! I really think it only makes sense to attempt putting heat on hair that's longer than TWA status! LOL However, I have no interest as of yet to go down the destructive path of heat and or chemicals on my hair. A black rinse is as far as I will go, but my hair seems black enough for now.

I finally have hair long enough that I can pull and stretch out on top! The sides are still not longer than 1.5 inches. The top is almost twice as long and that's really because of the way my stylist kept cutting my hair, so I have sort of a graduated nappy mohawk!

And last night, partly because I was bored, I attempted to make twists with the hair in my crown area! And it worked! My hair on top is just long enough to make small twists! Of course they looked like hell, but after two months, I should really be able to twist more hair! LOL

I know I'm being long, but I have never been so proud of my hair before. My naps really are a reflection of me that my straightened hair never was. I feel authentically like myself and I'm loving me!

I had better enjoy this now, because I fly home in a couple of days and I have no idea how my family will react to the new me! It will either be /images/graemlins/shocked.gif or /images/graemlins/clap.gif or /images/graemlins/confused.gif LOL /images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hey ChiChi! Now maybe my eyes are failing me, but according to your updated pics, your hair looks longer than any 2.5 inches! LOL Especially if you were to pull your twists and measure them. As someone who can finally claim that some of my hair has passed the 2 inch mark, I know without a doubt that your hair is closer to 4-5 inches on the top unless you cut your hair since then.

I liked your micro twists, especially in the back because that's what I can make for the first time. And I have learned my lesson-- never try wigs or quick weaves! /images/graemlins/tongue.gif

well congratulations on quickly adapting to your hair! Since Jainygirl brought it up, have you had the desire to use heat on your hair?

My hair is still too short to consider it, but even if I had a 6 inch fro, I just don't see how heat would benefit me unless I was interested in pressing my hair, but I just don't want to use anything that could mess with my hair's health.

What are your views on the heat issue? /images/graemlins/drunk.gif

You're definitely having a "moment" alright! LOL

Don't worry I'm sure there are other freaks out there just like you! LMAO

Ok, let me stop. Basically, I think that very few of us if any have exactly one texture of hair on our head. I'll admit that I have plain old ill defined naps sitting right next to tight nappy coils and now as my hair begins to grow I'm seeing a tiny population of retarded straight hairs that are messing with the harmony that the rest of my hair was in, but at least these hairs are patted down and covered with ease. And I'm loving all of it!

Our hair is just like our DNA, it's completely unique to each of us (unless you're an identical twin and in that case...) LOL

Oh well, I look like my daddy and I may as well face the fact I have his fro also...LOL! I have one nearly straight hair in the front that likes to vex me daily. /images/graemlins/laugh.gif

<chuckle> Now you're sounding better! And I can't believe you're not going to measure your hair for so long! Good luck to that! /images/graemlins/spinning.gif

Xerxes!! your hair is looking good girl /images/graemlins/shocked.gif!!! I love the first twa pic especially /images/graemlins/grin.gif. I know you are ahead of me in length, but i still have to ask, how did you do your comb coils?? This is one of the styles i wanna try in a few months. looking good /images/graemlins/smile.gif TIA -- jainygirl

I think you are definitely past twa and in the in-between stage everyone talks about. You have a good length to start practicing many hairstyles /images/graemlins/smile.gif. -- jainygirl

Jainygirl, you are just too sweet! I looked like a hot mess! /images/graemlins/laugh.gif LOL

Honestly though, you'll be surprised at how fast your hair will grow. And from your avatar, you look like you're pretty close to my length already! lol

I am still horrible at my twists and just like you mentioned, my twists look more like comb coils! All I did was twist my hair using the two strand method and released my hair and it formed a coil instead of a twist.

My hair just prefers to either have no definition whatsoever and just be fuzzy looking or to coil up when I do try to encourage a curl or twist to form! LOL

Hopefully in two or more months, my hair will be longer and I can make decent real twists. Comb coils only require you to use a small tooth comb to pulll through your hair in a twisting fashion and you'll end up with a nice shiny coil.

Tigerlily, thanks for the compliment, but you know that your 'fro stopped being a TWA like 3 inches ago! LMAO

You've got a real 'fro going on! I can't wait to get to your stage! And are you going to show any pics of you with twists or anything? :-)

Okay. lol, it was hard for me to tell. I think anything above the shoulder blade is short, lol.

I do have a couple of pics of twists (or my attempted twists, lol) in my Natural hair album if you want to take a look. My password is in my siggy.

You do not /images/graemlins/laugh.gif!! In a few months i will try them with the comb and see how they look.

My twa is doing great. I'm trying another product as well. I always buy the Soft N Sheen spray but i also picked up a tube of the Sta Soft Fro moisturizing lotion. After i try it i'll get back to y'all with if my twa likes it or not /images/graemlins/smile.gif. -- jainygirl
