I went back to my super gro lite conditioning grease... i tried the no grease method, but my hair was breaking like crazy with out it. I think my hair likes grease. My mom used it on my hair back in the day, and my hair grew like weeds. I'm also trying this no mineral oil/petroleum grease by africa's best..the texture is a little thick for my scalp so I use it as a sealant.

I dont put it on my scalp, because its just buildup.. and my scalp wont stop itching.. begging for me to get the grease off!!
I had even stopped putting it on my hair altogether but my hair shed a lot just using oils. So i used grease and it stopped!
So basically.. i just put it on the hair, not the scalp
I may try using oils on my scalp tho

Nope, haven't used grease in years.

I do remember those tiny blue and green grease jars from when I was little.

I don't use grease on my scalp. It's too thick & heavy. I prefer to use light oils or creams. Sometimes I don't use anything on the scalp, depending on the condition.:)

i went about 4 months without greasing my scalp. now i do it once a week and its working fine. the grease i use is blue magic coconut oil grease and it only has 2 ingre. coconut oil and petrolium.

Since i started co-washing several times a week, i no longer see the need to grease my scalp, I only grease my scalp so that I can finish the hair pomades that i currently own, Dr Magic hot gro, once its finished, I am not buying anymore grease!!

No. and no flakes i think because i cowash so often..i havent used greased since May and i dont see myself going back

I havn't greased my scalp for a while except for a light oil. My scalp is actually less dry now. I also wash/cowash more frequently then I did before. I actually have no dandruff now and my itchy scalp is down to a minimum since I stopped the heavy greasing.

I didn't when I first came here but now my scalp gets really dry and in the last few weeks the oils only made it worse. The oils are good for my hair but not that great for my scalp at certain times. I have no idea why. So I use a bit of grease on my scalp now and it's fine.

I only put castor oil on my scalp now and my scalp and hair love it.

I don't.

I'm not above putting a dollop of grease in my hair in the winter time when my hair needs help holding onto moisture, but I don't see any benefit from having such a heavy substance on the scalp.

If my scalp is irritated, I'd rather use an oil or aloe vera gel... something that allows my scalp to breathe.

I do....

I Luv's me some grease, it's my best friend. I am not ashame to admit it. Oils have the tendency to dry my hair and scalp out. My hair is like a sponge, when it comes to using oils. I don't know why this is so, but what I do know , is that our hair will let us know, what it needs, when it needs it.

Im way to lazy to grease my scalp.. Since I've been washing with my aritha bar and moisturising with a leave in an oil I've not had a problem with dandruff

NOOO. But I use natural oils sometimes. I think there's a difference as the grease may clog but light oils like avocado helps to clear out sebum and also encourage growth and sometimes coconut too.

I have used castor but only after a fresh wash, mixed with avocado. I only do after a fresh wash so as not to clog the scalp.

To each their own though. I'm sure someone's doing it and it's working for them.

I apply castor oil/coconut oil based Boundless Tresses Revitalizing Hair Balm to my scalp 3 to 4 times per week. It keeps my scalp clean and helps my hair grow thick and strong. :yep:

Since this "Old Thread" Got Bumped...ok....I'll take the bait.:look:

My Fav "Grease" is Black & Bossie by Kalawentz All Natural Hair & Scalp Oil with Aloe Vera, RNA, Biotin,Vitamins B5, A&E, Bee Pollen, Jojoba, Wheat Germ, Hydrolized Protein, Keratin and Other Natural Oils.:lick:

Its not a grease really it is hand made oil by an herbalist here in Houston that suffered from alopecia before and came up with her own cure and treatment basically. My stylist uses her products on several of her clients and I started using the hair oil and leave in tea.

This is her site if anyone would like to check it out. She is natural and promotes going natural to everyone. She is going to be giving workshops on going natural starting next month.

I was wondering, what exactly is grease as opposed to oil?

"Grease" is just another word for pomade, which is a thick product usually composed mainly of petrolatum (think Vaseline), mineral oil (think baby oil), or some other cheap carrier. In most greases, the good ingredients are less than the main "bad" ones for hair, like the mineral oil and petrolatum/petroleum. The reasons these are considered bad is because they don't actually penetrate the hair shaft or scalp.

The molecules are too large to do so. Petrolatum and Petroleum are oils, as they are made from purified crude oil (same element gasoline is synthesized from). Other lighter oils like coconut oil, almond oil, grapeseed oil, etc., have smaller molecules that can penetrate the scalp and hair, and have better nutritive benefits for the hair and body (as you can take coconut oil internally). Petroleum coats the hair and scalp, blocks out moisture/locks in moisture (think of what happens when you put Vaseline on wet skin, it works well for sealing the moisture in). Well, since skin and hair are made of keratin and other proteins, these oils work usually in the same manner on both. HTH.

P.S. I love grease, I apply sparingly to scalp and use on moisturized ends to seal them. I have used grease for years, and my hair hasn't suffered because of it. I also use many other oils, so my hair gets the penetrating effects from the lighter ones, and the sealing/lubricating effects that come from a heavy oil like petroleum or mineral oil.

Thanks for the link, her hair is beautiful. But, I would question my own sanity to spend $42-$75 for a 1-2oz jar of oil, essentially grease. Ain't nobody's product that good...I could make my own for half the price! The other products are very reasonable, though.

I said the same thing when I first started purchasing it:lachen:
I have had great results from it. It says its a 2 month supply, but really a little goes a long way and it always last me 3 1/2 months minimum.

I used Dax as a child and thru my teen years. I stopped many years ago but not because of my hair but because Petrolium based and mineral oils caused my face to break out. I just started back up several months ago but now I use and all natura castor oil pomade. Love it.

After geting my hair cut a few months ago, I asked the stylist for maintence suggestions. She instructed me to grease my scalp with bergamont regularly. I asked her thoughts about using evco instead but she said she was not a fan of oils as they tend to weigh the hair down. She said to think of the grease as fertilizer and to remember back when I was a litle girl...my mom only used grease and my hair grew great.I could see where she was coming from and going to with that. I greased with bergamont once but i didnt care for it. What I have found and like is shea butter oil in a tube like applicator bottle or just a bit of evco right on my scalp maybe once a week. So far my hair has remained soft, shiny without being heavy. I think I'll continue oiling my scalp sparingly.

I recently discovered the Georgia Peach pomade. Yes! My scalp loves it! Winter destroys my scalp so I grease it. I don't get build up because I wash my hair every 3 days.:yep: When I stopped using grease, my hair and I have suffered. I've decided to listen to my hair on this one.

I will put Groganics Hair Growing Wild hair grease on my scalp when I have a headache, it has a tingle and is really soothing. If my hair were not so fine I would use it regularly, but it is too heavy for my hair.
