Well it is a lil more challenging to learn on your own head. I learned on dolls at first ( I was much younger) and just a lot of trial and error on my own head. but I think it was a good 2 months of consistent trial and error B4 I could do my own

I'm trying to teach myself. I suck, but I'm getting better.
I'm using one of the cosmetology school mannequin heads from sally beauty supply but it's hard because of the silky straight hair. I need to get one with a hair texture closer to my own.

no i can't get cornrows my scalp is too sensitive, but i did learn to do two strand flat twists. I braid the ends instead of twisting because it makes the twist last onlger.

I'd like to learn in the future. There are some good videos in youtube that show step by step instructions. I'd like to have more length before I cross that bridge, just got my 1st sock bun  The girl who braids mine said i'd learn easily with one of those human sized salon model doll thingy's :drunk: I don't know the name of them :lachen:sorry!

Practice on your girl friends! That's how I learned how to french braid last year. But now they keep asking me...

I can cornrow my own hair but since I just wear a wig over it is not really aesthetically pleasing but it gets the job done.

not trying to brag, but I learned when I was about 12 years old because my brother was dating a girl who did braids. She got me a doll head and I would braid the doll while she braided my hair, and after they broke up I had to do the trial and error thing learning on my own head. Now I can braid like a champ! lol but shhhh, don't tell no body cuz I don't like to do it.

I can't cornrow, I was trying to learn this past weekend and I got kinda frustrated. I will keep trying though.

I can flat twist.

I just learned how to braid. I practice on my own head. However I can only braid the sides down and back. I can't figure out how to braid going straight back. I am still practicing. I am hoping to get the hang of it soon.

Uh no, 'cause my head is shaped weird-completely flat in the back... so that style looks WHACK on me. Plus I have a sensitive scalp but I learned to do a french braid on here, which, when you think about it is one big cornrow...isn't it?

I dunno how but I'd like to learn. Not for apperance but for protection when I'm not doing anything. Plus it'd make a bad braidout? Do I feel a learn how to cornroll in 2010 challenge comin' on?

I know how to cornrow, I used to do my guy friends hair...they let me use them as my practice dolls. Doing my own head though is another story. I think I just give up because my head is too big and my arm get tired!

Yes I did.
I always had trouble getting my braids to stay tight.
In the beginning I had to braid my hair twice. I would section each row, braid my entire head of hair. then Go back and re-braid them tighter.
I am not sure how long it took me to get better but I would say within 2 weeks, I was able to braid my once and be happy with the results.

It's really worth it, if you can be patient with yourself and learn her to do it!

I've only recently learned. First I mastered flat twists and then I graduated to cornrows. I always was doing them the wrong way before, starting over instead of under. Actually today is my first successful cornrows because I wanted to copy a style I saw.
Learning the flat twist technique 1st definitely helped me figure it out

I've tried many times with no luck! Any ladies in the HOUSTON area who can do two strand twists or box braids, holla at a sista!!! I'm looking for a cost effective way to manage my natural hair.

What are the best You Tube tutorials out there? I'm so jealous of women who can do this. I've tried for so many years, but I feel like I have 10 fingers on each hand. :nono:

I always new how to braid so cornrows was a no brainer... Last month I cornrowed my own head two weeks before having my darling daughter.. I find it easier to braid my own hair b/c I am so tender headed that when other people bread my hair it hurt so bad.. I feel like the little girl in the color purple when she was getting her hair comb saying ouch ouch ouch ouch..

No but I learned to french braid. I've played with flat twists and I have make a bit of progress on cornrows

Hmmm, i'm not really sure how to respond. I think that cornrows are mainly under handed right? If so, then nope, can't do them to save my life, but if they are over handed then I'm good. I've only recently learned and now I'm trying to master the under handed technique. Once I get that down, I pland to learn how to do a circle. I guess the good thing is that I'm learning on myself and my braids are pretty taunt so I don't have to worry about them coming undone:)

I've also just recently learnt, my mum tried to teach me for years with no success, lol. 2 things I realised I was doing wrong:
1. I always used to bring the hair over (for french braids), instead of under (for cornrows).
2. I'd forget to do one braid before you begin to start picking up hair.

Hope this helps someone!

No french braids and cornrows aren't the same as French braids are flatter and cornrows kind of stick up. Not to mention with French braids you braid overhanded and with cornrows you braid underhanded. I also taught myself at a very young age. Only thing is I can't part to save my life so I can only do straight back on my hair and I'm a female so that only works for braidouts. I wish I could learn how to do designs on my head. I find it hard to cornrow UP on my own hair. It can be done but as with any skill someone wants to perfect, PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT.

I learned when i was about 12,13 years old. That's when i thought i'd be in charge of my own head and at first they looked messy and uneven. But practice makes perfect. But the thing is, because i learned and practiced on my own head, i can only do them on my own head because i have to put my hands in a certain angle. So i still have no idea to do them in other people's hair because the angle would be different, i would be doing it from above, if you know what i mean.
So if you really wanna learn just practice a lot, like just get a section of your hair and practice and re do it. Once you learn you'll never forget.
