I never really gave any real thought about hair growth speed in terms of racial background. I think there's an average and that's as far as I'll think about it. I'm more annoyed by the "White women do it too!" claim, as if that justifies unhealthy hair practices.

The thing is, whether white women do it or not, the sheer numbers don't lie. AA women are responsible for billions of dollars in sales for hair products, artificial hair, and relaxers. The percentages show that an overwhelming amount (not all, I'm not saying all, don't shoot me!) of AA women are buying things to make their hair appear longer or straighter, or to hide some severe damage. I find that when someone points out these observations, that's when people get twitchy about racism and they feel offended because someone says something about it.

I also kind of get annoyed by (and it's one of the reasons that it took me a long time to actually join up) how many people will resort to insulting the hair of women of other races. "Their hair is limp, stringy and scraggly looking, my hair is so versatile!" and then justifying the insults by saying "Well, they're talking about our hair anyway" or "White people are so obsessed with our hair". Chances are, they're not giving it any thought.

Well I don't think ALL white peoples hair grows faster than ours or any other race in the world. I am sure there are many who grow above the average. Just like there are black girls on here who grow above the average.

But I don't care about white folks growth rate. My hair is growing and thats all that matters. :yep:

I can't believe people's responses in this thread.

It's like saying black women don't have a different body type. We just "happen" to have bigger hips, butts, and generally thicker builds. Lol it's GENETICS

It's the reason why we don't have blue eyes, why we have more melanin in our skin, why our lips are bigger. There are exceptions, but there are also general characteristics! Hair growth rate is different among different races.

Perfectly stated! :)

IN MY OPINION, white people's hair grow alot faster!

This is my story and I'm sticking to it!!

If anyone thinks I'm wrong...prove it:yep:

sorry, you introduced the theory, burden of proof is on you.

you seem kind of passionate about this but it's still a bold statement to make without some form or fashion of facts.

sorry ..but I've seen so many threads where people tries to argue the fact..
It just kind of made me think that alot of ladies here was in denial...And I got kind of annoyed..:ohwell:

I don't think it's denial.

Like it was stated...both hair types can grow at the same rate but coilier hair may break a bit more.

I think the thing of hair PUSHING from the scalp faster than Afro texture simply because its straight would be inaccurate. (not denial) I think it is more about retention of length than how fast it comes out of the scalp. There is a difference.

Besides how do we know that the lady with chin length hair simply was someone who had faster than average hair growth?

lol. yes..I was going to explain who she was but I thought that would be a bit too much...still haven't slammed the death penalty on that helfa yet!!:nono:

That case was my obsession prior to my new love, LHCF. I followed that case for nearly a year and I check up on it occasionally. If I recall correctly, Casey is an example of someone who experiences fast growth. In her partying days, she purposely kept her hair in a chin/neck length bob and on the advice of her attorney, she did not cut her hair and let it grow into a more mature shoulder length style in an attempt to alter her image. Once she was imprisoned after the final arrest, she hasn't been able to cut it. Her hair was already past chin length when she got arrested. She has been locked up for over a year - she SHOULD have some length by now!

Remember, she is locked up with no access to curling irons, flat irons, chemical services - nada! She is the poster child for low manipulation.

Really, I'm only concerned with how fast my hair grows...Plus, it is all genetics and genetics has nothing to do with ethnicity..."racial" appearance only accounts for less than 1% of genetics, so "black" & "white" hair is irrelevant. Plus, there is hair type and texture which comes into play.

Ex:
My aunt has gone from BC (less than one inch of hair) to BSL within less than a year's time with silky 3a hair, and I had a jewish friend with coarse 3b hair go from chin length to shoulder length in that same amount of time.

It is the individual genetics not this false perception of "race." Plus, all white women do not have silky straight hair. The same as all black women do not hair kinky, coily hair.

There are black folks in this forum who's hair grows faster than mine. There are black folks that I see everyday whose hair grows faster than mine. They all aren't 2's and 3's either. Yet I still carry on with caring for my hair. Their hair growth doesn't change how I care for my hair and neither does a white persons.

Oh and if that white woman was Paris Hilton heck yea the black woman's hair would grow just as long probably even longer, lol. Basically it depends on the person.

I agree that most white people are NOT concerned, but they DO think about it. Any white person that I have gotten close to/ lived with has asked me many questions about my hair.

My Asian friends were curious about my braids, and a Jewish friend of mine asked for hair care advice.

As always, my question is if WE are jacking up our hair so bad, how does one explain little black girls with short hair and white 3 year olds with long hair. Doesn't add up.

Excuse any errors - I am on my phone

I don't think there is anything to admit here. Hair growth rates vary regardless of race and hair type.

Scientific studies have shown that African hair grows an average of 4" per year compared to 5 or 6+ with Caucasians and Asians. I'll come back with the link if I can find it. The thing, though, is that "black" does not equal African. There is so much racial admixture in black people, esp. black Americans that the numbers are all mixed up.

And anecdotally, I know black people who's hair grows really fast, and also white people who's hair grows slowly. You can't really underestimate the importance of retention. Even if you only lose a quarter of an inch/month due to breakage, that adds up to 3" lost per year. I think this happens a lot with black women. White women don't experience breakage like that unless there's really a lot of damage.

Who cares? Growth rate don't mean squat if you are abusing your hair and making it break off and kinky hair is the most fragile hair type so it's harder for us to retain length. The retention factor is the difference because the white girls I know don't use chemicals and they are washing their hair a lot which is the same thing I do and people keep complimenting my hair on how fast its growing...

i cant agree with the bolded. i've seen too many lil white girls with zero hair and 3 strands of blonde hair held up in a boy.

it goes both ways... its all in the genetics your parents pass down

some of us have to work like slaves to get long hair LOL!!!!

So do some white women.

One of my coworkers had hair that in her words "just doesn't grow". The entire time we worked together, her hair never grew past shoulder length. In the meantime (2.5 years) I grew my hair from chin length to BSL....trimmed back to APL and grew back to BSL again. She eventually got a long waist length weave.

There are plenty people on this board that believe white and black hair grow at the same rate.

I don't care what study is done, I will always believe that their hair rate is faster than our's. Yes, retaining length is important but I don't believe thats the total difference.

I'm so surprised that no one has commented on another thread about a lady who has done a BKT and someone asked her what race she is and she said, just black. Now come on, black is not a race and to me, its really deceiving. We all know, whether we agree or want to admit it, what everyone views as 'black hair' is not type 3 hair. You definitely have a mixture of ethnicity if you have type 2-3 hair. But lets keep the PC threads going:nono:.... THANKS ORIGINAL POSTER FOR SAYING SOMETHING!:lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen:

I saw that.

But, what have you seen in real life??? It is almost impossible to tell how fast a person's hair grows via the internet, their claims, and pictures taken from all different angles.

Just like people on youtube "supposedly" exaggerate their growth, people on LHCF do the same thing.

I can take a pic right now that will look like my hair is APL, but it's not

Forget some whites folks hair....uhhh lets talk about your siggy. What I gotta do to get a body like that? I need help!

OK I see what you're saying now. I think that some people (especially those on Youtube from what I've seen) will use that "fact" to make excuses as to why their hair doesn't grow. If it annoys you I would say don't pay any mind to it. I'm not a scientist so I can't say whether or not white women's hair grows faster than mine. If I start to pay too much attention to statistics I will go nuts.

I was looking at that too, but it says "this is not me" underneath, so IDK?
The "thats not me" portion of her siggy is in reference to the hot mess drinking juice, not her "swangy hair"......... change that boingboing !you gotta look @ ur siggy preview missy!:yep:

Maybe the people who are taking care of their hair are doing this to them? I've seen mothers combing all sorts of chemicals through their daughters' hair, braiding way too tight, relaxing, etc. There's this little girl who lives in my building, she's about 6-9 years old, and her mother has braided her hair into oblivion, with the heavy barrettes and beads. Her teenaged sister has one of those broken off, relaxed to the point of breakage, one inch pony stubs that sticks up like the flame on a candle.

As for white people asking about your hair, sure they'll ask. It's something different. On the other hand, when they're sitting around together with other white people, I doubt they're wondering what black women are doing to their hair.

It always gonna depends on the person. Not even 2 yt girls grows their hair at the same rate.
Anyway, i just think that knowing that is irrelevant to my own hair care, sometimes i wish my hair grow faster, but anyway it is growing and that's all that matters :)
