I don't understand how you ladies get offended......

I could care less. but just don't touch my hair. I am really funny about people putting their hands in my hair. Its gross. I don't know where you hands have been.

I can't thank you enough for this post. I haven't been weave checked yet, and personally I don't care who thinks it is one. Just DON'T TOUCH ME!!! Maybe if they asked first that would be different. To me just walking up touching me or my hair with out my permission is an invasion of my personal space. Not to mention it's rude. Lol and I'm very territorial.:brucelee:

It irritated me one day when a woman actually yanked my hair in the store. I still dont care for her too much after that. I didnt like that incident or backhanded compliments

But I got weave checked yesterday-three times

and I liked it!!!

Why do some ladies take offense to that?

I got compliments that my hair was so shiny, and soft and full, so I don't understand how anyone can see that as a bad thing. :perplexed

Can someone explain that to me???

I have never understood this either. Even when I am MBL I probably will never get weaved checked because I like messy, wild hair...or toussled rollersets, or high ponytails. Noone ever weavechecks these styles do they?

I would LOVE to get weave checked, but I know it MIGHT only happen when I am MBL and flat-ironed.

Weave checks don't bother me, I think it's the touching that bothers a lot of people.

Some people just pretend to be offended, they don't want to admit that they love it.:lachen:

 How did I miss this?

It's true a lot of the time.

but honestly I would much prefer a normal compliment. "Your hair looks very nice" makes me feel good! :yep:

"Is your hair fake?"... not so much. The question is a little awkward. At least give me a "real" compliment first, then ask what I do to my hair. Have some tact.

but yeah, the touching and bad attitude is what makes people go from just feeling awkward to feeling annoyed/angry. :yep:

I don't know about weave checks but twice I've had black women think that my real SHORT hair was a wig, because of the fullness. My hair was shorter than my avatar but very thick. I was at a salon arranging my appointment for a weave, and they also sell wigs. When I came back to do my weave the owner, who is black, was all surprised at my hair. She had assumed I was wearing a wig because my hair was so full. Everybody in the salon apparently thought my hair was a wig.

I took as a compliment; my hair looks good enough to be a wig? Well damn! :)

lol me too, I don't think I've ever been weave checked.:perplexed My brother said my hair was too messy or something to be a weave. :look:

I think I'd take it as a compliment if it happened to me, I'd assume my hair looked particularly good that day. Or I'd hope that was the case.

Sometimes I wonder if woman's hair are weaves. But this isn't just for black woman. If your hair looks perfect; long, thick and/or lush. I'm like 'is the beautifulness real'? I never ask people though and I'd def never touch them.

I used to get weave checked all the time when I was a relaxed head. But as a natural ... nada ... zip ... zilch ... not one check.

It never bothered me when it happened though. I never had someone just roll up on me and stick their hands in my hair without asking first.

How else are supposed to fish for compliments 'round here?(Giggle)
When my co-worker asked me if I was wearing a wig one day b/c I was wearing my hair in large flowy curls, I was flattered and couldn't wait to rush in here and share my joy!(HUGE Smile!)

:lachen: I love being weave checked (First time was a couple of years ago, I did a curly rollerset and someone asked me what "hair" I used cos she liked the curls)! It's even more fun now cos I'm transitioning and my hair doesn't look as long as it is (shrinkage) and I'm usually weave checked when I'm wearing a braidout or twistout. I was so excited when my friend told me my braidout puff looked like a phoney pony :lachen:

Okay I have to ask, how exactly is a weave checked performed? Is it just checking to see if the hair feels fake/looking for tracks?

I think the offense comes when people assume it couldn't be growing out of your head. Same thing with being asked if you are mixed with something....

No, I'm crayola brown and my hair JUST GROWS!!!! I don't need a sew in to look like this (and my hair is only APL)....but people have sooooo been convinced that black people don't grow hair that...well...there has to be a SPECIAL reason.

If anyone ever yanks or pulls my hair they will be asked what the H E double L is wrong with them. I think those pulling hair is looking for track to fall out or something. That is rude.

There was a post... someone had it in their siggy and it was sooo true. It said something like, "All I'm saying is, those of us who are exceptional may just have to get used to being called exceptional". I really wish I could find the quote. But it's like, those of us on this board are more likely to have truly exceptional hair. The kind that people don't see growing out of scalps every day. We might have to get used to people being shocked that it's possible.

Looooool, you just have to have a good humor and perspective about it. People stop me and ask me if my eyes are real (they're green) and if my hair is my own (it's wavy on the top/front and loosely curled in the back plus it's super fine). People are generally curious about what THEY don't think is "normal".

I finally got weave checked yesterday!!! I was on the train and these girls came up to me and asked "is that your real hair?"

but I'm only CBL and my flat iron job was puffed out to the max (looked like a blowout, because of my bad flat iron job)

I was feeling a bit insecure about my hair too at the time, so it was pretty nice.

I've never been weave checked but, from what I understand, it involves someone running their fingers through the scalp. I hate to be touched by strangers, and the scalp area is far too intimate for some @sshole off the street to be touching.

I wouldn't get pissed off though, not at the implication that my hair is fake. I'd even be flattered if someone thought that my hair was too nice to be real :D I don't really care if other people think that I'm really bald or something. I'd be pissed off at someone thinking it's ok to be putting their hands on me without my permission, especially on my scalp, and even more disturbing is me not knowing where their hands have been.

It depends on the person who's weave checking. For some reason white ppl weave checking me is irritating b/c I know it comes from the mindset that black women can't grow hair.

I CONSIDER THAT THE EQUIVALENT TO THE HEAD PATTING AND RUBBING FOR LUCK THEY USED TO DO. THEY HAVE JUST UPGRADED IT!!!!

There is a Good weave check and a Bad weave check, lol. There are people that will look at you with awe and ask if it's your's. They will compliment you on your hair etc, etc. Then there are the rude weave checks where people are taking out their aggression on you for "thinking your alla that" LOL! It just depends on what kind of weave check you get.

Some ppl don't like strangers u don't know from adam and eve in ur hair. If it was someone I talked to or I was close to then I could understand.

I don't mind if asked properly, but sometimes enough is enough. My BFF's brother compliments me on my hair a lot, and I don't really have a problem with him touching it lightly. HOWEVER, lately he has taken to petting me right on top of my head and telling me how soft/long/pretty/whatever my hair is. This is especially a problem when I have a WNG or twistout...I mean, afterwards it's all lopsided. Last time he did it, I snapped on him and screamed "DO I LOOK LIKE AN ANIMAL?" -- that mess was annoying.

Some simply have admiration while others seem to have contempt. That determines how I feel about the "weave checking"...

i have experienced this and most of the time, it's wrapped up in shade, contempt and people trying to knock you down a peg. I don't like it and the person's self-hatred just radiates. It's gross.

Most black women just assume/know its my hair. I only get offended when WW ask me "is that a weave?" in a whisper, with this stupid look on their face LOL Like they just caught me in a lie and want to keep it a secret between the two of us.. GTFOHWTB

Yeah I am cool with getting weave checked as long as you don't nose dive into my scalp at least ask first lol

I agree with all the posts here about the context of it generally there's tons of shade attached or ppl wanna put their paws in it .... No bueno!!! If its a genuine compliment that's fine.

I think the underlying problem is that people, Black or otherwise, TRULY believe that Black people can't grow their hair unless they have some kind of genetic miracle going on. I find that kind of thinking strange. Like it's so nonsensical that it's kinda sad that people feel the need to "prove it" by digging their nasty hands in people's heads and feel their scalp or pull their hair. It's absurd. Should I go around squeezing breasts or butts if I think they're fake? :lachen::look::rofl:
