I don't understand how you ladies get offended......

Hmmm, it wouldn't upset me but I wouldn't like it. I don't mind people touching my head though.
So if they need to check, they can, but I don't think I would "like" it. Just because I've never had a weave and I would never get one.

Oh well. Not a big deal though I guess. People are just curious, sometimes I'm curious, but I could never ask a stranger.

I agree with some of the others there, it's the mind set of the person complimenting your or insulting you a sister says it. It's more like girl that has got to be weave because that **** is tight, a sister will pay about $300 for some good hair or MORE!!!!!! depending on the length.

Unfortunately other RACES think ignorantly that we as a black culture mixed or not can't grow long hair, and don't be light skin cause your momma must have been white because black folk don't know how to use a comb and brush, and our hair can't have pony tails cause we too po for conditioner and shampoo. (kidding none the less)

We get mad because it's not what you say it is how you say it. And hopefully it's not underhanded, when some of my white friends go IS THAT YOURS" I go YES IT IS, when I had hair and they ask me four times in a row I go YES Again, ,but when they ask me am I mixed I don't want to give them that idea that Black women can't grow hair so I say NO, I am not and I don't need to to have long hair!( I am of mixed race but what does that have to do with the price of tea in CHINA)! That is what UPSETS ME! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR (BITING THE HEADS OF IGNORANCE)))))))

So sad cause I find that it's mostly my own folk approaching me with this bullish.

Weave checks don't bother me, I think it's the touching that bothers a lot of people.

Some people just pretend to be offended, they don't want to admit that they love it.:lachen:

ITA...I think it's the touching part. I would never just grab someone's hair. :nono:

ON a related note, I have a great aunt who's probably in her 60's with gorgeous, thick BSL hair. She had her hair in a beautiful spiral set, but had it protected with a cap until she walked inside for Thanksgiving dinner. When she took off her cap, my other great aunt started trying to put her hands in it. The first aunt demanded her to stop. She kept teasing her and messing with her and finally my long-haired aunt got up and asked to switch seats with me because she wasn't dealing with that. It wasn't ugly or rude, but I respected her for respecting her own hair.

I could care less. but just don't touch my hair. I am really funny about people putting their hands in my hair. Its gross. I don't know where you hands have been.

I have a question...

Short hair girls, do you get checked too?

I don't have to wait until my hair is long to be weave checked. :lachen: I have been checked numerous times in my life and my hair hasn't been long by anyone's standards.

One time in highschool my teacher weave checked me in the middle of a lesson.:ohwell::spinning: My hair was nape - shoulder length at the time.

It only upsets me if:

You touch me without asking - especially strangers.

You come at me with attitude.

I know there are plenty of people ignorant about our hair textures. That's something that I can't control. I was ignorant about my own hair for many years.

but sometimes people just don't know how to keep it respectful.

When I wear my hair without help "OMG I love your wig!!!"
It.Never.Fails. :lachen:
And it's far more annoying, than it is offensive...to me at least.

I have seen girls with short hair get weave checked.

Their fros and bobs just look so thick and luscious, people just think that its weave instead of their hair.

And I love a girl with a blunt bob or a real full fro. Make me go gaga :lick:

:nono: Sorry to hear that!

I am the only person of Black race in my block circle and literally the people look and inspect my hair, the ones who are related to my neighbors, I am like do you have nothing better to do (these thoughts are in my head) are eyeing and STaring like superman x ray vision to see if I have a piece in my hair.

My girlfriend we will call her Afternoon, she goes hey when are you getting your hair done I go this weekend. So she asks am I going to shampoo my hair tonight, I go no I will wait (she wanted to use my CHI). Her cousin LOOKS AT ME LIke ILLLLLLL! She ask why. I tell her normally caucasion scalps need more washing because of the oil build up, compared to AA. She looks like ewww!
Well upon her departure she goes I am going to get some PULL pork from White Castle you wants some, I say no thanks, Afternoon tells her "she doesn't eat pork" She goes OH! I thought ALL black people Eat POWK and she pronounced it like that this time to put on a country accent. this is how I felt  ----< you bdidtliltin gholthlhtyotbhe

This is what I go through, the sisters I usually meet are positive or ask questions.

BUT you have a nice head of hair :yep:

I TOTALLY AGREE :yep:

I think it depends on the persons approach.

You hit it on the nail :yep:

HOW IS THIS ONe,

I LOVE YOUR HAIR, where did you get it from?

Why? Cuz I ain't no dog and I don't wanna be petted like one. Thankyouverymuch!!! I couldn't care less if people think my hair is fake or whatever, but nobody has a right to paw me up to satisfy their curiosity.

My ego is a bit too secure to find a "compliment" in such dubious treatment. It's almost like when White folks used to rub Black men's heads for "luck". I guess "long hair mojo" rubs off too?! ;)

I am waiting to get weave checked.

My grandmother thought that my twist out was a weave and when I told her it was mine (and my mother proudly piped in that is was mine as well) she looked so proud. And DH's sister was asking him if that was my hair. (I am a little past SL) I still haven't had a physical weave check, or had to show my scalp. I have seen other black women in stores look at my hair, and look like they wanna say something, not negatively.

That being said, I don't want a stranger just coming up to me putting their hand in my head, I would be happy to show my scalp. And if they ask, I probably wouldn't mind them touching. But knowing me I would probably do a wash that night...

Like most people said it's the approach, if someone grabbed a fistfull of hair then you are pretty much allowed to be upset and offended but if they asked polietly and apologetically then I guess it's cool.

For me, it's less about my length and more about my thickness/density. The longer it gets, the more commentary I get. But I got the commentary when I had a stacked bob too. I can't help others' ignorance, and like other posters have said, it is truly all about where the person is coming from.

I've only been weave checked a couple of times but most people assume my hair is all mine. I've been told it looks like a wig (I have a lot of hair) but I've never been accused of having a weave to my face. I'd probably be amused since I never wear weaves.

Asking if my hair is a weave doesn't bother me at all! I just don't like people sticking their hands in my hair checking for tracks. I just think it's super rude, especially without asking. I have had people I don't even know grab my hair or try to rub my scalp because they think my twists are extensions.

I do not understand how ppl get offended either unless someone tries to be negative with the weave check..like if someone is trying to put them on blast..or if someone tries to put their hands in it without permission

I take my weave checks with pride.

idk...my bff jill

Oh yea congrats on your compliments. :happydance:

see that's exactly the problem i had. i didn't mind so much getting weaved checked to a point- i mean when too many ppl are doing it has a tendancy to just plain old get on your nerves as is we aren't capable. but it was the strangers sticking their nasty paws in my hair or pulling it to see if it would shift or something. booooo! but i did have a nice lady who was much taller than me so she was looking at the top of my head(lol) ASK if she could touch it and that was cool. believe it or not i just got weave checked yesterday for thanksgiving since my bc. they was like- i can't believe it's growing back already!

I'm just a little past SL now (basically Collarbone) and I get checked mostly because of thickness. I don't understand it because to me my hair CLEARLY looks real. When I was relaxed and APL, I got weaved checked by my grandma :lachen:. No one else ever did it to me then though.

To me "checking" is actually touching my hair. I'm only past APL, but it has happened three times in recent months and all by other black people (two girls and one guy).

Two times there was actually a "tug" on my hair to see if it was real. I was offended and shocked to say the least.

My boyfriend weave-checked me and I took it as a compliment...one of my good friends did, too. She is transitioning

I got weaved check yesterday at Target by an old childhood friend! :lachen: I've always had my hair cut short and I guess she couldn't believe it was long now. I always get this tho....

However, I didn't know what a weave check was until reading this post. I used to always get weave checked when my hair was cut in the old Halle Berry style and I would dye it cold black. Confession....I loved it then and I love it now!!! :lachen: This just confirms that I'm doing something right!!! :yep:

Now I know....

Sometimes those weave checks are followed with a little backhanded :yep:compliment or negative remarks to take away from the compliment :wallbash:.
So, that can be offensive...and they can keep their "compliment"

Not exactly a weave check, but way back when I was natural and didn't know how to do a style I'd wear my hair back in a ponytail. Well, I once overheard a group of girls say, "That's not her real hair, you can't see the scalp." I just rolled my eyes, but I secretly wish they'd done an actual check so I could prove them wrong.

I had women come up to me and touch my hair all the time during those days... Those were weave checks? I was 12-14 (basically stopped getting all the compliments after I relaxed then started wearing weaves. :() and pretty flattered!
