For those who color (or henna) to cover up greys...

I don't use hair color but I use henna whenever I see a lot of grays in the front of my head.

I henna (with indigo) once a month, I don't colour anymore because it broke my hair.

How long have you been doing it once a month? Have yo unoticed any breakage with the henna/indigo?

I did my first henna/indigo treatment about 5 weeks ago and I'm almost ready to do another :look:

About every 3 weeks for me. Mainly when I notice my roots getting too grey to hide. I have a lot. I started when I was 17. I'm not ready to let them all just hang out yet.

I've been doing it for about 6 months now. At first I did it every two weeks, but now the mixing, setting for 12 hours, applying for 3 hours, rinsing forever... It's too time consuming so I only do it around the 1st of the month. So far no breakage whatsoever even when I was doing it more often.

I have been graying since I was 17. My hair grays at the temples and within two weeks, my hairline is covered. I henna every two to three weeks. I love the way my gray is coming in because the henna makes burgandy streaks!

It gets increasingly more often as my hair gets more and more grey :nono:
Nowadays I have to color the roots every 5-6 weeks.

For the past year, I have been henna'ing 2x's per month like clockwork. Beginning in 2010, I will henna only once per month. I am quite sure I have reached my henna "saturation" I don't suffer from breakage, I moisturize daily, and if my hair feels dry after henna'ing, I usually do a whole-head baggy that night. :yep: I use NUPUR 100% Henna. It also has other great ayurvedic herbs that are great for growing healthy strong hair.

Henna conditions and strengthens hair, so as long as you're conditining and moisturizing you shouldn't get any breakage.

Every 5-6 weeks sounds about right if you've got greys at the front of your hairline.

how often do you color or henna?

I was doing this at least every 4-6 weeks because my greys are on a mission to destroy me

The good thing about henna is that it doesn't fade. You couldn't take the henna off with dynamite, that's how powerful it is! One bag will do the trick and it costs $2 bucks.

Henna is a bit messy so I started to venture out for other alternatives. Right now I'm dying my hair with a plant (soy) based dye I get at Whole Foods for $17.99 a box. The good news is, its quicker and less messy than henna. Plus it doesn't have all those harsh chemicals that Miss Clairol has. Unfortunately it took TWO boxes to get my entire hair done the last time. This stuff ain't cheap  Oh and the henna is so strong that any strands of greys that turned red with henna are still RED. Like I said, not even dynamite can get rid of the henna once you apply it to your greys.

Every 4 weeks on the new growth all over my head. If I have a function to go to it might be every 3 weeks with just the hair in the front and temple. I wish they discover a cure for gray hair because I'm sick of it. I started graying at 18.

I 2 step henna/indigo generally based on the sight test :giggle: (how much grey can I stand, IOW) than a set schedule, but no more frequently than 1x per month and sometimes quite a bit longer.

So you mix the henna and indigo together and then apply....?

My mom greys at the temples and I did her first henna last night, I will add indigo over it today when she gets home.

I forgot to mention that I use henna. I'm so gray, I have to henna first and then use indigo if I want to get it completely covered. I henna for one hour, rinse and then indigo for one hour.

No, not for myself (I do this for my mother...it's called a 1 step). For myself I do a 2 step...I do the henna 1st (then rinse) and then the indigo as a separate step.

A 1 step is for reddish-brown hair...you can make it more or less red w/ your henna/indigo proportions. Want less red, use more indigo than henna, want it more red, use less indigo. You dye release your henna and then right before use mix your indigo up w/ warm water and some salt and let it stand for about 10 mins....then you add your indigo to your henna and make sure you keep it well mixed when applying it.

A 2 step is for BLACK...except for my few greys, my hair is VERY black, so if anything I wanna go even DARKER w/ blue tones :giggle: (That's an oddness of black haired people, they want more darkness...this is why Bigen dye exists and ayurvedic herbs/oils are always noted for the darkness they impart :yep:)

I do the two step process but my hair is more of a reddish dark brown. When you are very gray like me, I find it's hard to get your hair black and stay there...bummer:ohwell:

BM do you use the henna w/o indigo just staying red? I'd go back to the henna mami. $18 is a lotta bread compared to $2...LOL :giggle:

:giggle: I love this smiley LOL :giggle:

I have used indigo in the past. Before I found AyurNatural Beauty I was paying $30 big ones on indigo  What in the ... I was like forget it, I'll just leave it red. I was also getting frustrated with the loooong process of henna. I don't always have 6 hours of time to leave that poop on my head LOL

I might go back to henna/indigo for black hair because I don't want to pay $18 for a box. Oh and I lied to you guys. I had to buy THREE BOXES of that Whole Foods hair dye. I can buy a whole lotta stuff for $60 bucks! Hell, that's a KBB purchase with free shipping right there LOL

I 2 step henna indigo once every 8 weeks or so. I would do it once per month if I had the time.

Do you have to let the indigo sit for 10 mins before applying, cause I just mixed it up and applied it to my momma hair. Please help me and dont tell me her hair will be a different color than blk.

I henna whenever I see gray hair and leave in on overnight and what I've noticed is that everytime I do that, my urine comes out black. I've mentioned this before and it seems like I'm the only person this has happened to. I recently spoke with an Indian woman and I forgot to ask her about the urine issue, however what I did learn is not to use shampoo to remove the henna, she said I should use plain water to get the henna out.

I do henna and henna glossing about once a month. I don't have alot of greys but it works like a charm. Looks like random highlights lol.

I touch up my hairline maybe every 6 weeks - sometimes more often, my hair grows in spurts. Like, overnight. It works well, doesn't dry or damage my hair. I've been using it for two years now.

I also bought Rainbow Indigo from Whole Foods, but I've yet to use it.

I've been using Clairol Advanced Grey solution but I have to touch up almost every week because when I workout I sweat the color fades, and sometimes my hair may get a little wet from the shower. The advanced grey solution just ain't cutting it. I think I am going to try Moisture Actif Colorspa as it is a demi-permanent. Just reading about the process of using henna makes me want to run in the other direction. I don't need to complicate my life anymore.

It depends. I use henna/indigo, but not on a set schedule. I give myself a treatment when the grays are filling in around my hairline or if I need to thicken up my fine and thin strands. I guess you can say that happens at least every 4-6 weeks.

What helped me was using one ounce of amla powder to my henna/indigo mix. It made a world of difference in how dark I was able to get my hair.
