I lost length when I started going to stylists for relaxers. They relaxed bone straight and I think that overprocessed my hair. My hair was the longest in high school when my mom did my relaxers; she timed them and washed them out after EXACTLY 15 minutes.

My two major set backs were clippers and heat damage. The lady that did my BC used clippers on my hair and she didn't even shape my hair right so even til this day, my hair is uneven but i'm slowly trying to even it out and also because she used clippers, by ends were horrible. The second setback was heat damage. I used to get a press and curl every three weeks at my aunts salon and never had any problems but once I started doing it myself without and heat protectant, my curls wouldn't curl and I had a lot of breakage. I learned by lesson, babied my hair and I can say my hair is in the best state its ever been in my life.

Trial and error is good to a certain extent. But what I see on the boards is just product junkyism. It usually doesn't take 13 conditioners to figure out what works for your hair if you've done your research and paid attention to how your hair reacts to products and their ingredients.

The problem is, people don't start by doing the research first. They just see who has the longest or prettiest hair or what's popular at the time and do that. Then they wonder why their hair is breaking or they have a setback.
Oh ok, good to know.:yep: thanks

Knock on wood, I haven't had one yet. But I am really cautious with heat (I've only used direct heat once this year) and protien. These, when not handled properly seem to cause a lot of set backs.

I haven't had any set backs. But I notice that a lot of people's setbacks come from not knowing what they're putting on their heads and why. Also, it seems to me that people use a product or technique because someone raved about it without asessing whether it will be good for their particular head and that leads to some major problems.

I completely agree. The first five products I bought when I joined worked just fine (shampoo, DC, moisturizer, leave-in, and hood dryer). But, I kept buying more and more for no reason. Thankfully, this hasn't caused me a setback, but I wasted a lot of money. I think trying too many different shampoos was a problem, if anything.

Pre-LHCF, my issue was "bumping" my end dailiy. Rollers and pincurls are now my friends :yep:.

I voted other because I feel my major setback is the lack of funds. There are times when I know exactly what to do to my hair to get it back on track. The problem is finding the money to get those products whether they be cheapies, homemade, or expensive. No matter what, they all cost something.

My Setback occurred in Nov/Dec '08 and was caused by a disasterous Salon Mishap over Overprocessing, Overlapping and Poor Neutralization and basically Negligence.

Now, that I am a DIY, I will be able to pinpoint any mishaps. And it will probably come from My total "Lack of Skills" since I was a slave to the Salon on a weekly basis for over 25 years.:perplexed

Leaving my hair out loose too often. It leads to me eventually getting frustrated, so I become lazier with my regimen. That equals single strand knots, dryness and blowing out my hair too often (not for manageability but to switch things up). It's something I'll have to get over as I'm reaching the stage where I'm going to need to protective style with my own hair (I don't wear weaves) instead of braids.

My hair was a bit past APL in Jan but I had to cut it to SL/APL in May because I left it out for 3 months. It's back around APL now but I'm going to keep my hair braided up with extensions until it's no longer possible.

i had to trim twice this year already because i manipulated my hair too much this winter. i was wearing WNGs for 3-4 days (and not braiding them up at night) because i didn't want to walk around with wet hair. once i started doing flat twistouts my hair got better; once i put in senegalese twists it REALLY got better. i voted for rough manipulation.

i also voted "other" -- i noticed a lot of people getting to APL/BSL and being so excited that they stopped paying attention to their hair. i am guilty as well -- now that i am APL i have straightened my hair more than i should have. i have seen no damage, but i realize i need to go back to what i was doing if i wanna keep up my progress.

You tell me! If you've ever had a major/noticable setback, what has it been?
ETA: I forgot HEAT! Ah well, that was the case for me previously, with dying, scissors and improper moisturization...

There are SO many thing that had set me back. Luckily they were all within about 3+ years ago, so I have fully recovered. :)

1. Relaxing w/o protecting ends. Relaxer run-off caused major thinning/frail ends that would need to later be trimmed off.

2. Relaxing with anything other than Phyto. I successfully used Affirm, Optimum Choice, Vitale, so many others for years with (seemingly) no problem. It was just so much WORK to keep it looking full and healthy. protein all the time, protecting ends, being afraid to touch and comb hair for fear it would break. Phyto changed all of that. It wasnt noticeable until I really started gaining length with more Phyto than the other relaxers...and it was clear as day what I had to do. Chop off the weak frail relaxed ends that were noticeably weaker and thinner in structure as it continued to grow in length. My hair is almost like a naturals now. which led to #3...

3. Too much protein. Once I didnt need to use protein, I almost got some losses with breakage. Oops. Quick fix restored it though.

4. Heat styling w/o protection or deep conditioning.

5. Going on a crash diet and losing TONS of hair in about a month, having to get it all trimmed off.

6. Not trimming uneven hair -- it traveled up, impacted other pieces, and made it word. I've learned to let the strands GO.

7. "Protective styling" without actually protecting my hair. Just keeping it off my shoulders wasn't always "protective". I had to ensure it was clean, w/ a healthy scalp that could breathe, and finding the products I needed for the season my hair was in.

8. This wasn't a setback of the hair as much of a setback of the wallet from buying nearly every product that someone exclaimed about being sweet glory on their hair. Jumping on bandwagons during product raves has put me back for unnecessary mess that really didn't make much of a difference in my achievement of hair goals for maybe even thousands of dollars over the years. From hairstyles and techniques, to high end products, to cheapies... jumping ship too quick set me back with what was tried and true on more than one occasion. Once I learned to stick with what works, and trust what is good, I flourished.

When I think of all I used to do to my hair - it is a miracle that I was not bald at some points in life...

Me. I am very Hair care challenge and have completely ruined my hair. Even with all the advice I get and try, I have continued to completely damage my hair. I give up. No more kitchen beautician. :wallbash:

Been there. Done that. Hated it. When I think of all the times I paid $15 for a 5 min deep cond. treatment...it would make me feel justified in buying some ultra high end conditioner. And a steamer. And pibbs. And a T3. And caruso rollers. And mesh rollers. And a chi...:nono:

Seriously, salon Slaves are becoming free though. FREE THE PEOPLE!
Congrats on your decision.

See I wear wash and gos 95% of the time and the other 5% twists. I'm worried about winter hair. I don't want to be in the cold with wet hair. I mean it's 4pm and I washed my hair at 6am and it's still wet. I guess it's best to stick to twists for now huh? :ohwell:

Or can you do a W&G in the evening? And just spritz it in the AM with water or something like Dove Moisture Mist to freshen it up? I do this sometimes when I am wet bunning and dont want to go out in the cold.

well I hate to admit this, but I don't like to sleep with anything on my head so a second day wash and go usually isn't happening. My hair will frizz up as soon as I hit the bed and even when I wear a bonnet it squashes down until it looks matted.

I think I've only had one bad setback. It had to do with me not trimming my hair, and allowing my split ends to travel way too far up the hair shaft. The other thing would probably be heat damage. My hair splits really fast, and heat doesn't help matters.

Under processed strands. I have like 3 different textures going on right now. I'm to the point where I want to relax my whole head. It's a tangly mess. :nono:

Single strand knots cost me almost 1 to 1.5 inches of growth this year.

I had to put an end to the knots.

YES!!! i didn't even realize it till i paid extra at the dominican salon and after 8 min she pulled me from under the dryer. :nono: i was probably better off when i skipped the DC because i figured "they put conditioner on my hair after they shampoo it, why do i need to pay more $ for more conditioner) :nono:

yeah...i had to pick them out in the morning, then they were frizzy. twistouts became my friend -- 5 big flat twists at night when i cowashed, then i took em out in the morning. i am flexirod-ing my way through the winter this time.

I often lose length dealing with professional stylists. Either they are scissor-happy, or they use sub-par products that don't do anything for the health of my hair. Whenever I want to grow my hair out, I avoid professional stylists like the plague. All of my hair missteps have involved professionals who couldn't care less what my hair looks like after I walk out the door of the salon, as long as it looked good when I got out of the chair and pulled out my wallet. My current stylist is a notable exception, but only because I made my expectations clear (and told him NO sodium lauryl sulfate shampoo!)

I have some Silk Elements Stimulating Herbal Shampoo and it has sodium laureth sulfate (its actually listed twice in the ingredients) Is this poo a :nono:?
so does my Cream Of Nature detangling shampoo.

I think it's supposed to be drying to the hair. I noticed a difference in my hair using non SLS shampoos.
