Well.

My hair is growing very nice & LONG!
Im so happy about it..

EXCEPT!

Ive been wanting to highlight it for sometime now..

Can anyone tell me what the risks are?
I really dont want to hinder my hair from continually growing..
just kind want a 'new' look?

If I DO decide to go ahead & get it done..

What do you suggest I do afterwords?
:nono:

Color, especially highlights is a big commitment. Your regime should be on autopilot before you consider color. What effect are you trying to achieve? Are you sure highlights are the only way to get there? How much maintainence are you willing to do to the color afterwards?

I truly feel like Im really on top of my hair right now. I deep condition 2 x's a week. Co was often. Clarify 1 x a month. MY moisture/protein balance seems to be good. My hair seems to be GOOD right now- I just dont know if it`ll STAY there!

And I also plan on stretching my relaxer :/

DON"T DO IT! It can be very drying and very, very, very drying if you are going lighter. It weakens the hair!

Also, lightening and relaxers don't have good "long term relationships."

what color are you trying to color your hair i use henna to color my hair it gives me light red highlights it shows in the sun that is safer then using chemicals to highlight your hair henna is all natural.

I want to do color too. My hair is really thick and healthy now. I don't want to slow down the process. I am natural so it would only be one process versus relaxer and coloring,.

I colour my hair and I use highlights, however I went to Aveda salon, their colours are very nice and it is not so damaging. It is best to go to a professional.

I wouldn't do highlights ever again because I had a bad experience with them some years ago and don't want to risk a setback. My hair broke off really short where I had the highlights. That said, if you moisturise like crazy you should be okay I think.

Okay. What look are you going for? Sometimes you can still achieve a certain look with something other than highlights. If this is something you are going to try to keep up, you also need to drop down one level in relaxer strength.

I color my hair and proud:drunk:

I usually stick with reds and use professional non-boxed dye only. But i am also natural so its probably less harsh on my hair then it would be with someone who already has a chemical in their hair!

Hilights are kinda harsh, i remember when i was relaxed(every 6mths) and i got just a few hilights and i had breakage...but i also didnt take care of my hair too:lachen:

I lost quite a bit of hair to highlights a few years ago. My stylist used me as a hair model for a new coloring product. My hair had never been colored before so I didn't know what was happening to my hair at first...then i realized it was the color. I was taking real good care of my hair too, so i know it wasn't my regimen. I guess everyones hair doesn't like color .

You should take into consideration the thickness of your hair strands. My hair didn't do well at all with double processing but there are ladies on this board with thicker strands that don't have the issues I had with color.
