If you have had a weave in for a long time or if it has begun to mat than adding water or conditioner will make it much worse and your hair get even more tangled and you will likely lose hair. I have personally experienced this and this is what happened to Ateyaa recently. I am going to look for the thread where this was discussed...

she dyed her hair while in the braids...wow! never heard of that one before. do people really do that?

I've done it before. I got blonde streaks while in micros :look:. It came out cute but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. i didn't have any damage though.

I thought her set back was due to her washing her hair before detangling?

You're right...adding water will make it worse, but a good moisturizing conditioner, a wide tooth comb, and (most importantly) PATIENCE will ensure you don't lose more hair than necessary. She's using a small tooth comb that I wouldn't even use on freshly relaxed hair! She didn't even care about her breakage, and her hair looks drier than the Sahara desert.

This lady is resigned to the fact that her own hair could never grow or be beautiful, so she doesn't care what happens to it. She's just going to cover it up anyway. It's pretty typical. I've been there.

Yes I've been there too. There was years I just covered up my hair cause I thought what's the point? It will never look nice, so I might as well weave/braid it 24/7. I would detangle like Sabrina did, and then relax it myself, and then rebraid it that same day, and of course my hair was always broken off underneath the weave. It was only a couple of years ago that I found lhcf and actually learned about how too care for my hair. But.....Sabrina is supposed to be a cosmetologist, a beautician, a salon owner, someone who cares for and styles other people's hair. If I was a potential client, I would think if this person doesn't care about the health of their own hair, why would they care about mine.

I agree ladies I would never add water to my hair until first detangleing in order to avoid a hair disaster. But I wouldnt be opposed to adding some conditioner. As a stylist she should be ashamed of herself.

That was hard to watch. I too have been where I have hated my hair because I just didn't know what to do with the dryness. However, she is a beautician, she should know better or at least find the answer. If she does not know what to do, it is her duty to find a way to better her craft.

On the detangling tip, I just got out of braids yesterday. I prefer to finger detangle as I take them out, then wash, with conditioner in finger detangle again then use a denman.

I just watched this.

Oh My GOD.

She should be Shut down......:nono:

They SHOULD be shut down, but they won't be. There are a couple of articles floating around about a sting operation done several years ago that included Sabrina's. The state of CA was trying to shut down braiding shops because the people in them don't have licenses (like at Sabrina's). Sabrina and others argued that 1)because the state licensing curriculum for cosmetologists does not teach braiding or the care of AA hair and 2)that braiding is a thousand year old art form and 3) that it doesn't require the use of chemicals that need to be regulated, a license shouldn't be required to operate a braid shop.

Sabrina started her business out of her house and eventually moved to an actual shop. I'm not sure if she has her license but usually the girls working in their don't. Which is why you won't see anything even remotely related to healthy hair care.

I have mixed feelings about whether or not Sabrina should be forced to get the girls licensed though. On the one hand she teaches classes that are open to anyone in the neighborhood and then invites a good number of those people to work for her. It's a legitimate way for young women to make money, which is great. On the other hand, her business practices are deplorable.

Yep, Sabrina is very active in organizing braiders to fight against regulation.

I do understand their reasoning, but it's a shame that the shampoo girls at a salon need a license, while braiders don't. It's why getting your hair braided can be so dangerous...many, if not most, black women have had serious damage from braids at some point in their lives. But on the other hand, cosmetology school clearly doesn't teach stylists anything about healthy haircare practices, so the licensing requirements are probably just a waste of time.

http://www.salon.com/news/feature/1999/09/13/hair/print.html. The article ends with a quote from Sabrina: ""I assume they would rather me strip for a living." :perplexed

I like how some of those loc extensions look. Maybe I'm way late, but I didn't know that you can do that! but heeeeeeeeells no I would never step in that shop. lol

As for her hair... if she doesn't care, I'm not wasting my time worrying about it.

I don't know if I think they should be forced to get a license, but they do need some kind of regulation. I mean, licensed beauticians jack up heads every day! But can you imagine if these girls had healthy hair care practices to go along with their braiding skills? Add that in with some business courses, and they could do wonderful things!

oh no! My jaw hit the floor when she was showing the short bit. And she didnt even care!!! She doesn't even care for her own hair so how is she caring for her clients?

Great advert IMO, A great advert for people to not go there

Regulatated or not. If we AAs stopped tolerating piss-poor service these types of salons/spas or whatever would go out of f'n business.
BUT NO we still frequent these facilities (nail care tech incl.) And then later complian about how much damage they do.

I noticed in the comments that she mentions...

I Am, as i continiously tell the world..A Braider not a Cosmetologist..I run a professional Braiding and Weaving salon ONLY.We do not do natural hair of any kind..I have built a huge name for myself and my Braiding & Weaving Salon that has been running successfully for 13 years straight...It is not my duty or resonsibility to educate anyone on Natural hair care practices because that IS NOT WHAT I DO ! I stick to what i am good at and advise only in areas that i am a expert in.
Stop Judging Me

MY question is how can she really consider herself a professional with an attitude like that? A TRUE professional should want to educate herself and clients about caring for their natural hair. But then again, with haircare practices like what is shown in some of the vids, I believe that she and most, if not all, employees and clients will continue to be totally dependent on extentions. What's the point in spending so much on haircare if you're not going to take care of your natural hair?

This is what she does not understand. Braids are a WAY to take care of natural hair.... DUMMY!

I saw her giant pink signs back in the day ( in the eighties)- when I lived in So. Central....
She worked her way up, being a teenage single mom, with little formal education.

She really is clueless about hair care.... And there is NO excuse for her to say that - " she does no natural hair", after all of these years.. WTH???
I have to judge that.....
Further proof to Run from that place!:nono:
