Clarification regarding relaxers and drain cleaner....

tiffers

Whisper "bleep boop" to yourself when you're sad.
There seems to be some confusion going on that I wanted to clear up.....

Drain cleaners contain sodium hydroxide (lye)

Relaxers don't contain drain cleaner

Tis all :)

Naw, I just wanted to start a new topic so everyone could see. There's a big difference between Draino containing lye and relaxers containing Draino :yep:

Exactly. Lye soap anyone? The use of which produced more manageable hair and led people to develop hair relaxers. I guess I shouldn't use a natural soap and clean my a@@

I have obviously missed something but the relaxer/drano comparison comes from the fact that relaxers have the same ph levels as drano which goes to show how strong of a chemical it is and its potential for damage to hair since drano basically disolves hair...

Well whether or not they contain drain cleansers - whatever those are - I think is kinda beyond the point. I was thinking about this lately because of the CLT(see my siggy). Baking soda and vinegar mixed together can clean drains. The combination fizzes up and actually has a nice, soft, slip feel to it. The CLT is yogurt, baking soda, and amino acids. It helps "reduce frizz" but definitely made me feel like I had a mild relaxer. I think that the baking soda reacts with the acid in the yogurt, it fizzes up just like the drain cleaner mix. This made me see a direct connection between things that change texture and things that clean drains.

In the thread about CLT at NC I said I think that the first "natural" relaxer has been discovered for the above reasons.

No - of course they don't.... The comparison is often made due to the pH levels of both products..........They can be both very strong.

I think that is all.

Thank you, Tiffers.

I wanted to add that I know someone that works for Clorox and she said that drain cleaners are about 98% water. She said that now that she works for the company she will NEVER ever buy drain cleaner again. It's all about baking soda and vinegar.

BTW, I didn't read the other thread and kind of don't want to.

Oh and one more thing. Again according the the NIH sodium Hydroxide is in everything from toothpaste, to Woolite, to eye gel, to laundry detergent, to cologne. So I wouldn't get all bent out of shape about it being in your relaxer.

I think that is all.
I just wanted to clarify because a few people in that other thread were saying things like "Wow, i didn't know relaxers had drain cleaner in them"

Thanks for the Tip!!! I kinda knew that anyway - the sink drained quickly after I brushed with Baking Soda and Vinegar :giggle:

Oh and one more thing. Again according the the NIH sodium Hydroxide is in everything from toothpaste, to Woolite, to eye gel, to laundry detergent, to cologne. So I wouldn't get all bent out of shape about it being in your relaxer.

Eye gel?

Hmm... Thanks for the list. I am glad I do not use most of that stuff anyway. But toothpaste? C'mon. I think I might end up going back to just using baking soda.

If the main ingredient is the same, what's the issue? Drain cleaner may contain a higher concentration of SH, but it does contain it.

I think it would matter what you mean by main ingredient. I don't think that SH is the main ingredient as in mostly SH based on the percentages above.

Eye gel?

You're welcome. And that wasn't even the whole list. The original post was too long so I had to take quite a bit off that list. The point I wanted to illustrate was that SH is not the enemy. Its in practically everything!

Respectfully - I disagree with that....But...

Carry on...........................

What do the abbreviations stand for?

Ladies, I can see this thread turning for the worse. Please don't get my poor little innocent thread locked  I just wanted to make a simple clarification, that's all.

I don't want this turned into yet ANOTHER relaxed vs natural thread. I've seen enough of those to last a lifetime :lachen:

*walks out singing* "Go on and swear/See if I care/Good and bad hair"

(some of) Y'all got me wanting to :computer::censored: and act a damn fool today, but I will display self-control. Reading is oh so fundamental...damn.
