this is my second thread tonight ! i'm on a roll !

question though, many times i've heard my guy friends talk about how they'll only date a girl with "long hair" what exactly is long hair to men? i realize that i should probably be asking them this, and not a board full of women, but i'm at home sitting in front of my computer and thought "why not?" this question is purely out of curiosity...

It's probably regional what is long and what isn't. My guy friend from Cali thinks most of the girls there have longer hair than us East coast ladies, and it makes sense because I hear that a lot of Cali gals are natural and press. Less chemicals, less breakage, etc, etc.
Anyway, I feel as though in the black community anything at shoulder length and below is called long. At least in my little neck length book!

hmmm, i think you are on to something. i went to boarding school for a semester in mississippi and i used to always get told that my shoulder length hair was "long" something i completely disagreed with, because back home in california all my friends were at least apl !

I think APL or longer for most guys (BSL or longer for myself).

You are so right men are so fickle they don't know squat all they see is the package and if hair touches the shoulder they think thats long but Halle Berry during her short cut days was not lonely

Based on personal experience I would say SL + is long to men. I am only SL and men tell me I have long hair all the time. I don't think it's long at all.

i agree, most men think a little past shoulder is long anything past bsl is a weave though

i agree. i'm BARELY touching shoulder length with the longest part of my hair, and i get compliments from my fam and a few girlfriends like, "wow, your hair is getting long!" i think guys think it's long "for a black girl" as well, but i really think it's super short.

Well, my hair is just about APL stretched but my twists just barely touch my shoulders on the side, and past SL a little in the back. And my bf feels my natural hair in twists is "long". I think that many of my black brothers tend to think that anything past SL on a sister (without weave) is "long".

I think men who are into long hair, including my man , would go just nuts over BSL (without weave). That without weave part is so important to many of them, as well.

Well IMO, hair length goes along with your height and body shape.....I'm 5'3 full figure diamond<-----lol, and my hair just became apl, some men think that's long, but I think it's medium length.....and plus my hair is thick, (I look like a hairy person, and I'm naturally hairy), but anyways, now think about a 5'6 female with apl hair that's alot of hair because of her height, and especially if she's slim....so if trying to compare....I compare that way....

But realisticly, I think a Full APL and longer is long for the black community. I've been seeing alot of girls now with APL hair around my way but their ends are so scraggly and their hair is so overproccessed I don't even count it for being long.

For instance, I remember there was this guy (more like a kid) working at my job and we had to attend a sort of conference meeting after work, so I pulled my hair out of my bun to let it dry better (mind you I was only about apl and my hair was slightly curly from the bun) and he was awe-struck by it. He talked about my hair like it was booty length or something . I think just so long as your hair looks healthy and it has nice bounce and swing to it guys like it.

"To men" being the operative words here... I think at least APL. Most hair books I've looked at to find styles indicate that anything past shoulder length in considered long.

See! You're in the DMV like me (i'm in D.C.) and I tell you, around here you are the bomb diggity with shoulder length hair. Any longer, and you are definitely asking for a flood of "is that your hair" inquires. Btw, your hair is beautiful, bout to fotki friend you cuz you started were I was and your length is my goal!!

LMAO at bolded! I Totally agree with underlined! Thickness and swing really tricks the male eye, and is just as good as length to them. Let me tell you, I'm neck length and I just took out my collar bone length weave. Honestly, you would think I was Beyonce meets Nia Long when I have my weave in. Not long at all, but its nice and thick and very realistic looking and men have their tounges hanging out when I'm weaved up. The difference in attention that I get from men is NIGHT and DAY I swear, and this weave isn't long at all, just "healthy looking"

i think since its not common to see "real hair" BSL on black women on a day to day basis, the long hair standard is different for us. I think long on us would be a couple inches past SL to APL+.....but then again it depends on their surroundings. If there are a lot of black women with APL hair, then SL seems short. it depends

I think men of all races of men consider shoulder length as long, as i have heard men describe women with shoulder length hair, as having long hair. for me it would be APL+.

Anything "down the back" is long to the black men I've talked to. Two previous boyfriends thought I had "long hair" when it was a few inches past SL (maybe around 10 inches in overall length).

Well men usually have short hair. So anything just pass shoulder length and longer is long to them. I keep my hair up or if not puffy curly and I'm usually told I have a lot of hair but not long hair. Anytime I straighten my hair whenever I get outside it frizzes up to just pass the shoulder. So I don't really enjoy the benefits of men drooling over long hair.

Oh, at one point I was asked if I wore a wig. Even children have asked, well actually teased me for "wearing a wig."
