Has anyone's stylist helped them transition?

If so tell me how it went, or how it's going and what length you started out with and where you are now.

This morning, I was sitting in my stylist's chair while she was doing my hair and saw a hot comb nearby. I asked her if she uses that hot comb much anymore. She said, "I have quite a few naturals but most of them prefer I blow them dry and flat iron... why?" I told her that I wish I could transition. She said, "Well let's do it!"

Having tried a couple times before on my own was a mess of fragile strands and little breakage but I know with her help, I can. She's very much into healthy hair and is picky picky picky about damage. She refuses to color my hair all over and won't give me streaks except in areas of my head where my hair is strongest AND only during the summer because my hair is not as dry. Yes, THAT PICKY.

She warned me that it's going to get tough at times and we're going to deal with a lot of conditioning (as if this board didn't teach me that), but I will love the end results. I'm soooo ready for this because I watched her transition a high school girl who kept her bra strap length hair with the exception of a couple of inches.

She told me winter was the best time to transition (maybe she meant for me, I dunno) and she knows I'm a PJ so she said she's going to put me on new hair products as my hair's need changes. I'm sooo excited. Can't wait to get my hair stronger and thicker and growing faster.

You're VERY lucky! Every single stylist I went to convinced me not to go natural. Why would they? They knew that once I went natural I wasn't going to come by as much.

She's a gem so definitely keep her. I wish I had somebody that would've helped me. Thank God for the hairboards or I wouldn't have been able to do it. Just make sure you read up on how to transition and moisturize. Oh and when she flatirons, make sure to use a heat protectant.

Good luck on your transition!! You have this website and all the resources to be successful

She truly IS a gem. I'm well up on the transitioning threads so farr and she uses a heat protectant already when I go under the dryer for a set and when I get styled. I peeped her product shelves while she was rinsing out a relaxer and saw it was Paul Mitchell heat seal that she used before the dryer. I'm only 2 weeks post relaxer which is an advantage I guess. This way any hair changes can be quickly noticed.

Thanks for the reminders and please shoot me anything else you all can think of.

she was a stylist but i didnt go regularly to her. i went to get my hair braided or weaved and she would tell me to never put chems in my hair again and always encouraged me too keep on transitioning.she helped me for most of my first transition. she was natural and her daughter who had LONG hair.

she had alot of natural clients and some of her clients i though were relaxed actually were press n curl girls. many of them had long hair. i always loved my hair when i got it done and she was gentle and i never lost any hair. and when she straightened my hair for a weave it all reverted back. she was a pro with the marcel irons. but recently she moved into a salon (she worked in a barbershop) and she wasnt the same.

the quality of her work declined tremendously. she lost her touch as it were. the other stylist in that salon were horrible. they all had jacked up hair and were rough w/ hair and did almost every bad practice as said on the hair boards. i felt that she was starting to pick up on them so i havent went back. it was a pretty salon but they gave the stank face to people w/ natural hair and long hair too. :(

Good for you!! I WISH I knew a stylist who could assist me with my transition! I, on the other hand, will rely on LHCF to aide me with mine. Hold on to her tight, take notes, and be sure to share your transitioning tips with us!! Good Luck...you will do great!!

I wish i might find a stylist who would help me go natural. It's hard. At least for me it is.

Most stylists do turn their noses up at napps.

:newbie:

Why is it that stylists do not want us natural? :nono:

I guess they are so use to getting that weave money so they dont encourage natural style but the African Stylists sure do!:yep:

one of the stylists at the dominican salon i used to frequent helped me...only her though, the rest of them looked at me like i was crazy. i thought i would have to cut off all of my hair and she told me i could let it grow out and take off a bit at a time. when i told her it would all break off (this is what my know-it-all cousin told me) she told me that it wouldn't. she also emphasized the importance of DCing to me when i thought it was unnecessary. she was very supportive.

I certainly will. I'm keeping a journal (not posted yet) and will pass along any tips that I don't get from here... although I can't imagine any tips that haven't been covered.

Yeah, my stylist kept "warning" me that this will involve LOTS of conditioning. Fine with me.
