No... definitely not. I think one of her grandparents is though.

I believe her grandfather is. Her immediate family is Nigerian. She mentioned it on Top Model. My roommate is friends with her brother (they went to college together) and she said he did travel to Brazil to visit relatives on occasion.

huh? American is a nationality. Her heritage/ethnicity/ is half Brazilian and if her mother is Brazilian then it is pretty significant.
Brazilian is a nationality too. IME, there are so many ethnic groups, races etc in Brazil that calling "Brazilian" an ethnicity doesn't really give much information, unless you prefix it with something, *much* the same as it is in America. You wouldn't say someone's ethnicy is American, but that they are African American, Irish American, etc

In Yaya's case, from what I have read, she has some Afro-Brazilian heritage / ethnicity, through a greatgrandfather.

Very true I don't consider my family as 'brazilian" and although I was born in england I don't consider myself "english".

Dissecting race/nationality/ethnicity is a requirement when viewing beautiful hair. Consider yourself officially cc'd on the memo:grin:

:lachen:

Okay? Really? Does it matter? :rolleyes: :look: Gorgeous hair does not have a race........

Girl, you know, it matters to some people when they're looking for role models for their hair. It's more of an undertone that I see sometimes when people point out that someone isn't american.

I just wanted to make it clear that someone "Brazilian" can by blood be as african or more african than you or me. Heck, I was often mistaken for Brazilian (specifically from the Salvador / Bahia region) when I was there.

Back to our scheduled programming.... :look:

With all due respect, Yaya is not Nigerian-American, at least according to her own words as reported by Wickipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaya_DaCosta

I think that she probably is of Yoruba ethnicity in her blood line since her grandfather is Brazilian, and Yoruba is the major African ethnic group in that country. But she's not strictly Nigerian-American.

Anyway I could care less where she's from. I need to know her skin care regimen as well as how she does her hair. I remember reading in a thread here a long time ago that she might be texturized??? She is so beautiful and I'm glad that she didn't win ANTM because the winners haven't really gone on to do anything of worth, whereas she has done A LOT! :yep:
I think wiki is wrong. I was her biggest fan, back when she was on and all throughout the cycle, she made it a point to let everyone know she is Nigerian. I dunno why all of a sudden she's Brazillian:look:, guess it sounds more exotic:nono:

Because even on this board, when people see a nice head of hair they are conditioned to de-negrofy it to legitimize it.:look:

<sarcasm>

Oh, yeah, that's right! Hair that pretty can't come from a regular ole black woman, it has to be some sort of 'exotic' black woman.

</sarcasm>

:rolleyes: *sigh*
:nono:

Nobody said that she wasn't "american" , whatever that means.

Ok maybe on this board but I don't think that is what people were trying to imply in this thread. Some of us were just curious to know her heritage after it being mentioned that she is brazilian, because there is conflicting information on the net. Nothing more, nothing less.

Is it important? Heyal no! She is a beautiful BLACK women, PERIOD! Regardless of race or whatever BUT I don't see why can't people discuss race/ethnicity without people making assumptions or jumping to conclusions and getting all defensive.

/thread jack.

Imma just say she is gorgeous and her hair is so pretty. Her nationality shouldn't matter. She is looked at as black and thats what she is to me. ;)

Wow really? I read an interview where she said that she was natural. I also remember her saying that she suffers from acne.

And That is a Damn Shame. I checked in on this thread this afternoon and knew exactly where it was headed, I am not surprised.

Yeah, I do remember reading that, but I might be wrong...

Man... it's too bad that this thread seems to have taken on a somewhat negative tone, and I certainly hope I didn't contribute to this speculation over her ethnicity or any attempts to de-negrofy her. :nono: (but lol at that new word that I will incorporate in my vocabulary). I got curious when I read others' queries into her ethnicity and went to Wiki to check. :ohwell: As others said and even I said earlier, I could care less what her ethnic background is. Her hair is beautiful, and so is her skin and even her body from all those years of dancing.
