For you ladies that didn't want to look like a boy out in public, when was it ok for you to wear your hair out without feeling insecure?

My hair 3c/4a and 2 inches long/short right about now. All's I's gots-ta say is I am not quite ready, nor do I have style options, to wear my hair out in public. I for one would like for my hair to grow atleast to ear length and I would be comfortable wearing it straightened or in twist or a braid out.
I'd love to hear what you girls have to say.:yep:

When I bc at the end of August, I was not comfortable with the length at all so I decide to get some micros. I have them in now and I plan on taking then down at the end of the year. I took some braids down to redo them and I discovered that my hair is at a decent length now. Plus, I have seen so many college age girls rocking their twa and they are making me miss my hair. So, I plan on wearing my hair out in January.

A twist out or braid out would be nice at your length. I would say whatever time you feel comfortable.

Whenever you feel the most comfortable wear it out. My hair is 4-5 inches all around and I wear my hair out and I know I dont have the boy look. So, I dont think you HAVE to wait until you are ear-length but once again you know when you'll feel comfortable enough to wear it out. Accessories help a lot with maintaining a feminine look. HTH. Good luck on your journey!

When my hair was short it was hard for me to do a wash and go because the front was too short and I couldn't do much with it. I didn't look like a boy, but you could clearly see I didn't have a clue what to do with it.

Its so much easier now.

IDK length wise but I started wearing my hair out about 6 months after I bced. It would have been the equivalent of about a years worth of growth minus trims.

It didn't bother me when I bc'd on 09-07-08. I was rather relieved. I felt fresh, new, whole. I enjoy taking baths, showers getting into the pool and going to the beach and not have to worry about getting my relaxed hair wet or messing up my wraps etc. I think short hair can be rather sexxy, if you rock it right with the right clothing, accessories and a lil makeup. Just learn to embrace your NEW AND BOLD LOOK! I think you and your hair are BEAUTIFUL! Good luck on your journey!

I agree with everything you said.

when i had my hair cut low i was at the barber shop with my brother and this older sistah came in and her style was so...classy, sexy, and sophisticated i was like OMG i want that...the guys in the barber shop was like yeah ok...i grabbed this guys clippers...which is a big NO NO...its the equivalent of going in a womans purse...but i was quick and did a quick stroke with the clippers he knew i was for real he did it so nice my brothers mouth just hung open...well needless to say i walked out of the shop..and my head froze it was january in st louis missouri...it was the coldest thing i ever felt in my life...i was like what have i done...it wasnt about the length or lack thereof that insecured me...it was the brutal winter that kept me in hiding

I decided to get a full weave last weekend. I liked the short do, but i am looking to wear weave for the next year, four installs totall, and then wear my hair out then. Ilike being natural, but I want a little more hair to do things with. i wanna be able to do braid outs and twist outs, and with about 3 ins of hair in some places, and 7 stretched in others, i just want more hair to work with.
My license picture is of me at 1 year post, wll about 14 months and I have A LOT of hair. I will be comfy then.. My hair was about SL stretched and a nice sized afro at the time

i didnt feel comfortable with my short hair out until about 7 months after my bc

When I BC'd I was already Neck Length...

I don't really wear my hair out at Shoulder Length...

I think that has more to do with me being paranoid about my ends
than looking like a boy.

My aunt and grandmother and mother have had very short hair
my whole life... they just own it and make it flyy...
it's mind over matter.

I just BC'd after a year of transitioning, and my hair is between ear and neck length and I'm not too comfortable about wearing it out yet.
Thankfully I can wear it up in a bun.
By summer I'm sure I'll be fine with wearing it out.

well i don't look like a boy. i look pretty good with short hair. i'm sorry if you feel that way about yourself. why do you get a wig or some type of weave until you can feel more comfortable with your hair.

My sister rocks a shaved head and works in a law firm. It doesn't hurt that she's breathtaking gorgeous but, she also exudes a lot of confidence and she doesn't care what anyone thinks. She dresses fierce and no one would mistaken her for a boy.

Best,
Almond Eyes

I am currently rocking the braids right now. I am though missing my wig, because I would always be able to feel my hair at the end of the day.

Very funny story, cold tempertures on the head is no joke:lachen:

(((katblack))) I had short hair for so long when I was a teen. In the last ten years or so, I haven't had short hair except when I got my BC. What's so funny is, only my hubby hated the "boy look". No one else seemed to care. And actually prior to my unceremonious BC, I had worn my hair shrunked to about an inch to work. Everyone thought I looked different and I had fun shocking them by pulling out a long strand. (One of my coworkers even asked, "How do you get it to hide like that?" as if it's magic. :lachen: ) Anyway, it's funny but no one seems to remember the BC. I keep reminding them of the days I would look like a baby with a headband because it made hubby happy to see me looking more girly than boyish. so I'd force a puff. (See?)

I think we worry more than those looking at us from the outside. Start to wear it out at home on the weekends or when you go to the store...and it will soon grow on you. Get accessories, like a flower you can hold in with a bobby pin, or cute combs you can insert on the side with matching accessories.

I BC'd in April and I'm not comfortable with my length yet, I have been in braids since May. I think I'm going to get a full sew-in for about 6-8 weeks and I will probably feel comfortable wearing it out then. Hopefully by that time I will be close to ear length.

I didn't mean to say anyone looks like a boy perse with short hair, but undoubtedly that is the conotation when you are a women with short hair. It is a more masculine/boyish undertone as opposed to long hair. I for one don't think neck length or longer hair on a women is quite boyish but shorter than that, you might get confused:blush:

Thanx for the tips though, I do wear wigs but I am in braids at the moment. I just wanted to know some of the comfort zones of my fellow lhcf'ers. I know my comfort zone would be past ear length or longer. I have an attachment, me at my shortest prior to lchf, not bad at all...

I feel you, I think it's the men in you life that want to look at you like, wth:nono:...
That's how my dad was looking, he even asked me why?:lachen:

I forgot to add the pic where I said (See?). That's what hubby preferred instead of this. Girl, once you get comfortable with it, you won't care what they think. If I didn't like the girlie dos that hubby wanted me to wear, I would not have worn them. But I did like them, and would alternate with my afro, which he didn't like but whatever. He even hated one of my best creations (this a few years was before the BC); said it looked like spiders, but I thought I was sizzling with this do. :lachen:In time, it grows on them, as long as you yourself are loving the dos. One day, I wore a twist-out that sorta flopped (I personally didn't like it and knew for sure he'd hate it). Mr Mine was fine with it. He even stopped me from covering it up and went places with me looking like this.

So girl, you do you and ack like your ish don't stink and you'll soon have folks confused and treating you like your hair's da bomb, even when you might think otherwise. Remember my Lisa Simpson do? Who knew it could be such a hit?

i kno how u feel i felt like a lil boy for a while but then i just spruced my look up a bit with make up and accessories...it just had to grow on me and as time passed i gained length

I'm 5 months post BC and I transitioned for a year. I've trimmed a lot from the bottom to get rid of layers. I JUST started wearing my hair out in a twistout (see avi). I'm still not comfortable with a wash-n-go yet.

I became comfortable with my hair out when the twist done on wet hair was long enough to roll AFTER they were dry.

I know, I also need my hair longer because I personally dont favor my head shape :sad:
But after I take off my braids I will see how I like my hair out for 2 weeks in the comfort of my own home, it will be fun. In the mean time I shall use my wigs for work and perhaps school.:yep:

I loved my twa at first, but I want length!:lachen: I also don't want to deal with the cold NY air without hair on my head.:nono: Been there, done that! This transition period I am learning so much and I'm very thankful for all the ladies here who keep helping me.:yep:

I've been wearing my natural hair out since I did the BC but I have done some protective styles like braids and weaves because I have a tendency to put my hands in my hair...

Looking back when I BCd I had a TWA! I loved it! I wore it out and couldn't care what anyone thought, men either. Dh loved it, so maybe that is also why!:look: I have short hair, but relaxed, and I also love it short! I feel fierce in it.:yep: But, Dh wants me to go back natural and I can honestly say, I am a little scared to rock a TWA:nono:. I don't get it. I feel short hair is my thang, and to wear a TWA just doesn't sit well with me. What am I saying? Go with your comfort level, and like someone else mentioned, wear sew ins, braids, hats, scarves, and so ons until you are ready for the big reveal!

So, I officially BCd Oct 16th (that was at the barber shop, before that a friend had just cut off the perm and I was looking rough, lol). And I totally love the freedom of this! My best friend is a hairdresser and she is in serious distress over how short my hair is -- keeps recommending wigs and weaves she could make for me--but I just feel like I want to be a part of the process of getting back my long and luscious hair! And I want the people around me to be a part of that, too-- my bf and my friends and my coworkers, because rocking this twa speaks volumes about how I feel about myself as a black woman: I am beautiful with hair, with no hair, with short hair (the three years I was relaxing), with long hair (the seventeen years I was natural...why'd i leave?), ANYWAY! And, finally, on my college campus there aren't many black girls and a lot of us feel so overlooked and not appreciated when it comes to beauty, so I like when black girls hear my white friends (male and female) complimenting my look: I think it encourages them.... and as it keeps growing they'll be even more encouraged!

I just bc'd and at first I was wearing wigs out. Now I've been rocking the heck out of it  I love it!
