Supernova: I have 3b/c hair textlaxed/relaxed whatever. I have found a new daily regime which I think will help me stretch. I usually put my hair in 6 sections. I would do a two strand twist and flexirod that twist all the way to the top at night. I put cholesterol on my new growth edges and the new growth in the middle of my hair and tie it all down with a satin scarf. In the morning I would just unravel my flexirods and pin the the 6 sections up w/bobby pins to make it look like a curly ponytail. (see fotki) But when I do that simple maintance and notice I can't touch my hair without it shedding. Forget it. Relaxer it is. I normally get relaxers every 5weeks to the day unless I have braided or weaved my hair. I am going to try to stretch without the weaves/braids. But in your case I think you hair is telling you....relax me relax me!

I think so too, because whenever I have a fresh relaxer, my hair doesn't shed. It only sheds when the newgrowth gets thick. Well, guess I'll be putting a relaxer in soon. I did a henna n' placenta treatment yesterday so hopefully the softness that has provided will last until I relax.

I too think it has a lot to do with hair type. tighter curl patters may put more stress on the demarcation line between relaxed hair and ng while looser curls may just flow better. That's something to look into before stretching.

Interesting. I never heard of that before. I'll update you if youd like I am only at week 4 right now.

Very low manipulation (wearing buns daily/no combing)
Detangling with my hair loaded full of conditioner
Ok, well, my next question. What is the point in relaxing if the hair is always kept bunned up? I personally relax so that I can wear my hair, but keeping it bunned up seems to defeat the purpose of being able to wear the hair and utilize the length of it.

wow ur right

I hear you, I love to wear my hair down. However, I think everyone wears their hair pinned up or in protective styles is to protect the ends and allow themselves to retain growth or have longer hair in the long run. I dont' mind pinning my hair up, especially now it is hot as hell in California right now. But I must admit the last few months since I have been pinning my hair up, I don't have any split ends and I have retained more growth. My hair is almost twice as long as it was in February when I started this hair growth thing.

All that growth, DAAAANNNNGGGGG. I guess I want my cake and to eat it too. I want to wear my hair everyday, stretch, and still retain the length. guess it's not possible for my hair. I may consider wearing it up more while I stretch---although, I am getting a relaxer ASAP. I need to get my hair in the right health before stretching again.

I was just wondering because lately I have had to relax at 5 week because my ng comes in wavy and once it gets to 1/2 inch it starts to loop and loop and cause a curl pattern that has my hair tangled... and then I have to wash every 2 days to keep it from breaking because it just tangles at the root where the loop and the two textures meet. Does anyone else have this same problem, and if you do how do you deal with it?:ohwell:

Once I started using Kera Care Detangling Hydrating Shampoo, this problem stops. It's so detangling, it helps with the new growth.

The first time I attempted to stretch (around 2 years ago after a nasty touch up experience), it was horrible. But that was because I had no idea how to treat the new growth and basically neglected my hair. The new growth was a force to be reckoned with: super strong (though my hair isn't very resistant--I use a mild relaxer) , thick, wavy/curly, and thristy. It was a tangled, bushy mess. This was also when I used to wash once a week. I lost a lot of hair trying to comb it while dry--yes, I know. That was before LHCF. I have very thick hair, so the loss wasn't noticeable, but it was still a lot more than I was comfortable with.

The following relaxer I just put in more time by washing minimum 2x a week and co-washing. I was also more patient. I had to learn that with significant new growth I can't treat my hair the same as when it's all relaxed. I detangle carefully, use good leave-ins and sealers. I've been fine since then.

I use to stretch because I hated getting relaxers. My scalp would be on fire and sore afterwards. My hair would shed alot. I think that if I knew how to moisurize my hair and new growth I would have had different results.

I lose hair from tangles and knots that I try to remove.

Not pretty.

One thing that helped me significantly with the knots/tangles is to saturate the knot with olive oil. The longer it sits on the knot (I did this on my dry hair) the more it naturally "loosens up" the knot and you barely have to pull at it. I was able to loosen the knots with my fingers or the end of a rat tail comb.

This thread helped me a lot. I'm glad I am getting a relaxer in 2 days. I just did washed with WEN and am DC'ing..baggie no heat... and I lost SO MUCH hair... it has to be the relaxer stretch (17 weeks).. I'm going to go back to 12 weeks and not try to transition again.. 12 weeks used to be my standard until I called myself transitioning..now I think if I had've relaxed a month ago..i would have THAT much more hair... let me stop blaming the shedding on the MT now...lol.

My min amount of time between touch-ups are 10 weeks. The longest I went was 12. I notice that if I go past 10 weeks I lose more hair on detangling then anything else. I'm finding that it's not really neccessary for me to go over 10 anymore because when I compare my new growth it's not too much of a different between 10 to 12 weeks, and all I get is more breakage trying to detangle my hair.

I'm currently 18 weeks post and I don't have a lot of breakage. I was very surprised but I think it's due to the fact that I don't comb it when it's dry only in the shower with conditioner in it. I also use Mane & Tail detangler which is realy great because that why I can really get the roots. I also use Biosilk leave in.

I hear cowboy magic is excellent for dangling. You can search the forum for reviews. I ordered some from ebay last night.

not only did it loop and tangle it also broke off. Now I am trying to get those broken of patches back healthy and in shape.

now that I use MT I thin I am gonna stretch longer because my NG is softer and more manageable. When it starts to become too much I will relax.

Yeah, I use to loose hair do to tangling at the root, It was nothing too major however it was more than after my touch-up. About week 8 or 9 I would see an increase of hair loss. But now that I flat iron my NG (onlly) after my roller sets, I'm good. Stretching is no longer a problem for me. I hardly loose any hair now while finger combing and I'm 13 weeks post!!!

...Sigh......But i dont wannnnnnna relax now. Im enjoying my ng despite the breakage and major shedding. i finally got my ng's dryness under control along with its porosity....the shedding is scaring me. But i shed a lot this same time last year so i think its my natural shedding phase. But then theres the breakage. More so wet than dry. Ive done 2 reconstructuring treatments in 2 weeks and its still stretching then breaks off. usually thats a sign of not enuff protein but dang it....how much protein do u need hair!!....Its very strange. I didnt wanna relax until i figured out the cause. i wanna stretch til week 20...or atleast thanksgiving.......im giving myself one more protein treat. & dc. If i see anymore hair in my shower im giving up

I'm not sure if I lost alot of hair, but I lost more than I like to... I would be looking at my hair to see which ones were shedded and which were broken. It was ridiculous...

I loose more hair than I would like due to tangling. I am at 9 weeks post right now, and that is only because my hair dresser was out of commission last week. But I did a protein treatment the other day with aphogee for some breakage I have been experiencing. While it helped with the breakage it didn't help with the tangling. So I am just trying to find good ways to manage my hair type while still keeping it simple.

I get breakage after 8 weeks, so I cornrow my hair and cover with a wig, or get a sew in weave, and this way I can stretch to 16-18 weeks usually. Once my hair grows to BSL I will probably start relaxing every 10-12 weeks. So I guess i will be doing this for at least another year

Sis, do you detangle your hair with loads of condish in it while it's wet? I thought this was overrated until my Dominican stylist did it and literally my hair detangled like a DREAM! Whenever he came across a knot or a place where the comb would get stuck, he'd just run some more water and then add more condish. . .the comb would slide right through!!! He used the UNA condish to do it AFTER my DC.

I tried this at home and it worked great. Although it wasn't as effortless as it was at the salon (prob b/c my head wasn't leaned back...maybe b/c of the condish I used), it made things a ton easier. I'm 7.5 weeks post now stretching til 2nd week in Dec.

ETA: Oh and when I first start to experience an abnormal amount of breakage (for ME), I skip whatever wash day plans I had for that day and immediately do a Motions CPR treatment under the dryer for 10 mins. Then later I use my Porosity Control as a final rinse, my APhogee Green Tea Reconstructor, Smooth N Shine leave in and Nexxus Humectress Leave In. Next time I take my bun down to CW, a definite major reduction in breakage.

I usually turn the knob on my shower head so that the water comes out in one spot (hi pressure) I too put loads of cheapie (VO5) conditioner...on detangle days... but thats only like once a week that I detangle :sekret: The rest of the week it looks a hot mess do to cowashing and putting a stocking cap on...

Thanks, sis! Yeah, I do that, but I think I need a thicker conditioner though. My hair gets so thick at the roots when I am stretching, it gets worser when it is wet. But to maintain, I have started running water through my hair everyday and combing in sections and using silicone mix leave in, and just bunning. This is my first time stretching so long while using this method, but until that aphogee treatement, it seemed to work. I don't think my hair likes that aphogee too much.

 Yeah, my hair laughs at Vo5. I tried it and it did not work for me at all. I need something for super thick for these roots though.

Today is my relaxer day!!! YAY!!! I cannot wait! I hope that this ends this shedding. I'm about to go spray my hair down with SAA and get it done..LOL!

I got mine last night. Boy was she scissor happy. :nono: But my ends look way better, and I didn't shed as much as I thought I would. I think I am about to stretch until the end of December. I need to play catchup. I think I might get some twists or something.

I can't stretch for nothing. My hair starts breaking like crazyyyyy! It's so short so if it does start breaking, it will be noticeable.
