I dont comb my hair often once I get past 8 weeks so I get shedding plus tangles and knots, especially after 12 weeks post.

I begin to experience a lot of breakage at about week 6. My hair is extremely tight and highly coiled at the roots and I am not one of those people who can get away with not combing their hair for days or weeks. I would love to stretch longer (I waited 7 weeks then decided to relax before I experienced more breakage) but I would rather have hair that is relaxed a few weeks too soon versus hair that is broken off all over my head causing me to have to cut it and lose whatever progress I had made since the last relaxer.

Hopefully I will be able to figure out the proper combination of tools, techniques and products that will help me stretch longer because I do think it is a good thing to do but until then I just have to do what I think is best for my hair at the time.

I really don't stretch. 8 weeks is my longest. I have alot of shedding. But since comming to this forum I have learned better techniques. My last relaxer was Nov. 8th and I got a re-touch Jan. 7th. In between I have been using Brahmi powder as a paste and mixed with condish. which allowed me to get to 8 weeks. But the most alarming thing happened. I mixed olive oil and coconut oil together, basted my scalp ( LOL ) and the next day I could really comb through it without it pulling. Olive oil is the bomb as well as Coconut oil.

What happens if your hair doesn't tangle at the root, but on the already relaxed hair? Oddly, my hair doesn't tangle at NG, but at/on the already relaxed hair. Hmmmm

No, I don't lose a lot of hair while stretching; on the contrary, my hair has gotten thicker since I began lengthening the time between touchups. I normally stretch 13/14 weeks max. with no problem.

My regimen is very simple: I co-wash once/week, comb on wash day only, moisturize my ends with plain water and my edges with a water/castor oil mix once/day. Most importantly for me, I wear low-manipulation styles during the latter weeks, which keeps breakage to an absolute minimum.

For those relaxer stretchers who haven't yet checked out this thread by Patricia should go on over and read it. You are going to be really glad you did - I know I was. Here is the link:

Thanks Aggie. And you were right. I am glad I read it. Lots of good info. Because of my hair being so thin/fine I've been really careful with the protein. Hopefully the info in that thread will help me strengthen and stretch longer with less breakage.

Thanks for the tip hurrricane. I will definitely be trying this my next wash:yep:.

You're welcomed truthbetold. Good luck in strengthening your hair and longer stretches.

my longest stretch that i ever did was for six and a half months...that really just happended it was before i discovered this wonderful board:grin:...i did experience a lot of shedding..but, i attribute that to the fact like the last two months..i dint comb my hair......ahggggg...lol yeah i know...i was busy wearing my wigs....anyway, so when i finally did go in for a relaxer...omg i didn think i had any hair left..i saw her pulling clupms out if my hair when she was trying to comb trhough it to deep condition my hair:nono:....i said never agin..lol that was a lie because now i am ina challenge where there is a relaxer stretch from jan-june 09...i am doing good so far...so know that i have his board i know the right techniques to be a succeassful stretcher....so im doing it...oh and a little side note..i attribute my strtches yo my thickness of my hair totally...i relax only three times a year and thats it...:yep:

Last wash I lost way too much hair. About 19 weeks post now.

Hair at the roots is so curly that its wrapping/coiling around making it hard to detangle with relaxed part of hair.

Getting a relaxer in 2 weeks.

Going to the wig shop this week.

If i can find a nice wig then maybe i can stretch longer but too much hair started coming out in my WIDE tooth comb all a sudden and its preventing me from trying to transition.

I simply cannot stretch. If I do not relax at 6 weeks, I would lose more hair than it's worth. My hair is so tight when it comes it:look: Myscalp also actually become sore. I can't take it. I must relax:ohwell:

After trying to stretch 3x's I have discovered that 7 weeks is my limit. Of course, it could have something to do with my MT/Bee Mine mix giving me 12 weeks of growth in 7 weeks. I've reached the conclusion that I can either stretch or do growth aids but not both.

How many weeks were you wanting to get to?

I think my next wash I'm going to do the whole washing in braids thing and see if that will help. But then again the last time I washed I didn't comb my hair for three days. So it was probably just the 300 hairs I was supposed to lose.

I worked my way up from 8 to 18 currently. I can't wait for next Friday to get here! My saving grace is the fact that I only flat iron straight for like 6 weeks tops after a fresh relaxer. After that it's a lot of daily cowashes gently detangle under the water with my fingers after using a lot of conditioner. While under there I put my hair in two braids and then pin the ends up to keep them moist all day and slap a headband on and call it a day. My NG is fierce. I'm too nervous to do some of the styles some of you are doing. I stick to super curly rollersets if I want to look cute but this time I think I'm going to buy a nice straight high quality wig because I don't feel so cute looking like this.

I dont loose a lot of hair, when I stretch properly. I've formulated a regimen that I'm consistent with. I use products and techniques that work for me. My issue was getting past the knots and tangles. It was such a disaster. Now, I use silicon mix and survivor detangler. I:heart2: these product and there excellent to use while stretching.

Garnier Fructis shampoo and conditioner helps a lot. Detangle with the condish on ur hair after letting it sit for a min. . .under running water of course. Damn near effortless detangling. The tangles and knots just slip right on out. I used the Strength and Repair line. I'm about 14 weeks post, btw. HTH n HHG

I dont stretch, because I lose so much hair.

LOL, I dont go pat 10 weeks, and that is stretching in itself for me, LOL

I try not to go too far past 14 weeks because my new growth is something else, but I have found that using Porosity Control products (or an ACV rinse) can help with the knots. I used to lose GOBS of hair after shampooing and DCing, but now I spray diluted ACV on my hair after washing and lightly towel drying and I have been able to really minimize the knots and breakage. If you haven't tried it, it's worth a try, as it may be helpful

When I start to lose hair I relax. I'm not sacrificing 10 hairs so that the 5 that are left can be stronger, you know?

In the past, yes, I loss a lot of hair. Now I am 18 weeks post and amazed that I was able to stretch this long. I am relaxing this weekend, which is going to be the true test. Lets see if I can do my relaxer without a dangerous mess of tangles.

See, this is what concerns me after a very long stretch myself.

I am currently 15 weeks post and I co wash every day for moisture. Around 12 weeks I do a heavy protien treatment with duotex. Msm has relaxed my ng a bit and that helps. I baggie most of the day and all night for moisture.

I am currently 15 weeks post and I'm not having any issues stretching (last time I stretched 12 weeks). I cannot remember who it was, but someone posted about using serum when detangling (after a wash/DC) and I think this really helped me. I start doing this when I'm about 6 weeks post and I have no problems w/ excessive shedding or breakage. I cowash daily and wash/DC once a week. I also seal my leave in w/ castor oil. I very rarely wear my hair straight and I usually bun or just clip my hair up which keeps my ends from being super dry.

This has yet to be a problem for me. but I am very careful. I detangle carefully. i was finger detangling but combined with a conditoner that didn't agree with me that turned into a fiasco. Now, when past a certain point, I detangle with running water under the shower and as they said, loads of conditoner. Also, if you do get some knots and tangling, you have to be careful with the knots. I may see one, tops on wash day if any. And when you know you have a knot, gently unravel it, the way you would unravele a knot in a tennis shoe lace when you were a kid. you should be able to get that knot out if it's small without any breakage. DON'T PULL AGAINST THE knot if you pull against it it will be tight, and other knots will form.

Now if you have several knots, I don't know how you deal with them. Try to get the sheds out as well as possible but other than that, leave hair alone.

I'm a low manipluation girlie. I wash and dentangle twice a week, and this far past post, put that mess back in a bun!

I can only do lengthy stretches while wearing sew-ins. Other than that I experience major breakage.

I am 6mths post and have no breakage at all. I stay in cornrows under my wig. Just like wearing a weave except i can get to my hair/scalp. I only take my braids out 1x a month or 6 weeks and I get a small amount of shedding less much less than when i wear a weave. They key is a moisturizer that will penetrate the NG and soften it. There is only one that works on my 4beezies.
