It sort of depends on what her hair looks like to me. But never pass up advice that may do you some good. Just because someone is new doesn't mean they know nothing. Afterall, they are researchers and may have stumbled upon something you missed.

I'm a nebie myself so I can't tell who's new or not unless I look up their information, which I don't. If the person has beautiful long hair or at least has hair similar to mine (natural) and the thing they're talking about doesn't involve putting monkey pee in my hair, I might listen

Do you discriminate (whether you realize it or not) against newbie's advice or opinions?

I've seen little tidbits like "i have to relax every 7 weeks because my hair grows like crazy, and if i don't then it breaks off"... and thought :perplexed

it depends more on the content of the advice, and not so much the member's join date.

& i hope this thread doesn't offend anybody, or go off track

I will listen to a newbies advice. Even if someone is having a problem with her hair, she may have had a similar issue that I may be having and solved it and moved on.

If I am having trouble with dry scalp and she used to, she may be able to give me advice, even though she may be having a totally unrelated problem with something else.

It is not that big of a deal to me, because I feel that we are all here for similar reasons.

good question. I would hope people would listen to any advice they feel could help them. Every newbie here didn't come in to the forum with three strands of hair on their head. Some actually had pretty healthy hair and wanted a place where they could meet like minded people(don't let the short cut fool you... it was a choice). Being a newbie myself, I am soaking up all the info like a sponge, however I do feel like I am able to give pretty good advice as well for what has worked for me.

I still consider myself a newbie so I only offer advice on things that I know for sure from experience. But I look at everyone's hair - newbie or veteran and see what works for them and take that into account with any advice given.

I'm a newbie and i don't give advice. After growing my hair to healthy full SL twice and then losing it, i could probably say what not to do, but i keep quiet and let the experts do the talking

You're a cutie pie :yep: And i LOVE that cute!

I listen.

Just because a person is new doesn't mean they don't know what they are talking about. Also, if you look at a person's hair...maybe their hair hasn't always been jacked. Maybe it is newly jacked. Maybe a year before they joined they had waistlength hair that fell out due to sickness, meds, etc.

If it doesn't make sense then that's another story.:yep:

I will take advice usually from those that have healthy looking hair, but I am always willing to listen. You never know what made them have the hair they have now..it could be from circumstances not under their control like an illness, meds or a bad hairstylist experience. Hey, some of the oldies around here have made mistakes and their hair ended up looking jacked up! I am here to learn about healthy hair practices just like everyone else so I have no need to reject someone because they are new to the forum.

I think this is a good answer. Just seems there's only certain people that may be "qualified" to offer suggestions that people will actually listen to. I think there's an unspoken culture in this forum that suggests tenure equals knowledge.:look:

I like the bolded statement.

I still consider myself a newbie so I only offer advice on things that I know for sure from experience. But I look at everyone's hair - newbie or veteran and see what works for them and take that into account with any advice given.

ITA with the bolded. I give advice on what I know based on experience. But I do know that my advice may be overlooked because of the length of my hair.

I believe all of us have valid ideas & thoughts. I don't know none of y'all; everyone has my equal attention.

There are some "old heads" who have not put the hair care knowledge available here to good use...never mind how many thank yous they have.:yep:

how long is a person considered a newbie? does it depend on join date? by post count?

newbies/oldheads- it doesn't matter to me. everyone has had successes and failures with their hair. and what works for you might not work for me anyway (and vice versa) despite your status.

I just listen to whether or not what they are saying makes sense. It's nice to see pics, but it's not necessary for me to at least CONSIDER what the person is saying (heck, I don't have pics for religious reasons and I don't anticipate that changing any time soon, Insha'Allah). Plus, like someone else said they may have been lurking for quite some time (i.e. I was a member before this was a paid site and then lurked off and on for quite some time afterwards before finally subscribing).

That said, I'm not exactly one to jump on bandwagons so it's less of an issue.

It doesn't matter to me when someone joined. The hair is the verdict. Newbie or veteran doesn't mean anything in my opinion.

I would listen to a newbie dependant upon mostly what her hair looks like. Although I would also listen if she's had hair all her life as this is a great indication that something she's been doing was working and working well. I don't think i'ts wise to shun advice no matter who is giving it because what they may bring to the table may be fresh and new and let alone, quite helpful, so again I guess it heavily depends on the content of the advice as someone else stated.

Additionally, newbies from all different types of ethnic backgrounds also get advice from well knowledgeable people outside of the hair forums, be it a mother, a sister, an aunt, etc. So I like to keep an open mind and welcome all the help I can get and give in return. So newbies, go right on ahead...bring on the advice:grin:. All is welcomed in my book.

I'm leery of people joining the site just to promote a product. So if I see a thread where someone (usually without pics) and a low post count is in a thread telling folks about the new miracle product of the week that can be conveniently purchased at their website then I just bow out.

For the most part, if a newbies hair type and state of hair is what I look at when considering their advice.

I take advice if the advice seems sensible. I don't really check on if their hair is healthy or not. My hair was relatively healthy before the forum, but I wasn't taking care of it. I didn't know jack about hair care and my hair was always between shoulder length and apl. Of course, it never grew past that and always wound up back to shoulder length. People would always ask me how I kept my hair healthy and what i was doing, but i wasn't doing anything. I wasn't even tying my head at night. I would just direct them to my hair dresser. Anywhoo, I'm still a newbie, but I've done so much research that I think I know a good amount of info. I will give advice and take advice from newbies. i would just use my discretion. Btw, this is the longest my hair has ever been.

I take advice if the advice seems sensible.

I've seen/read good advice from newbies and older posters alike, as well as bad. Personally, I don't really take that much advice from anyone [anymore] and I only comment on what I've experienced first-hand.

I do sometimes give a side eye to those (regardless of "posting age") who say something like "not that I've experienced this, but here's my advice..."

I'm a newbie and if someone has a question about a subject that I actually know something about, I'll respectfully offer an opinion if I feel it is valid and helpful. (For example, I was Ayurvedic before coming here and have a little knowledge on that, but I don't bother answering questions that are relaxer-specific 'cuz I haven't had one in 15 years!) I think a lot of us newbies are folks who have been researching and experimenting by ourselves for years. That journey is what made us seek out LHCF. It's great to have a community in which to give AND receive. :yep:

I'm a newbie here and I wouldn't mind listening to a newbie. Often times some newbies have made a transition from another board to this board (like me). So they may be new to the board, but not the hair game.

Unless the advice was something COMPLETELY off, I'd take their advice into consideration.

I am also wondering what you guys consider to be a newbie.

I am newly subscribed to LHCF (low # of posts) but I have visited in the past and was a member at another site for over a year. I do a lot of research on hair because I love hair and hair science. So I am kinda a newbie to the site, but don't really consider myself a newbie to healthy hair care.
