i voted bra strap length
but im not the best gauge
(bsl is also 25 inches on me)

i started actively growing my hair a little before joining this board in nov 06
at that time i was abt armpit length
b4 that i was cutting inches off every 3 months
b/c my stylists i and were obsessed w/ perfect even ends :ohwell:
and i kept my hair short for years b4 that

but i must say this board has helped tremendously
i knew nothing abt moisturizing to this extent so that's why i kept cutting

I really like your fotki!!

I BC'd 4 years ago this month and transitioned 8 months before cutting it off. Then I kept cutting. I'm Armpit length. Was armpit length last year but my trims have a habit of turning into cuts. Now I try to just dust my ends. I'm also going the henna route after I take my braids down to cut down on the dryness from my current dye.

Sure here are a couple that have stood the test of time for my natural hair type:

  1. Overnight Prepoos (coconut and olive oil are my staples). Something about the protection this gives really pays off in the next stage - shampoo. I sit under a heat cap for 1 hour, then wrap it up and go to bed.
  2. Gentle shampoos (I usually use baking soda, but Sam turned me on to diluted Castile) Works wonders.
  3. Part my hair in two sections when I shampoo.
  4. I DC for 2 hours - 1 under a hot dryer the other under a heating cap Sam gave me. She also whipped up a DC and sent it to me. Whatever it is, it is off the hook. She's very into making her own products. Works Wonders.
  5. Sam is a proponent of natural hair care ingredients. Anything you can't read or google with straight answer goes in the trash.
  6. Cones are a savior - for well moisturized hair. If you put cones on dry feeling hair with crackly ends, it will break off.
  7. For real hair growth, you need to leave your mitts out of your hair. twist it up, wig it up, bun it up and you will get growth.
  8. Natural kinky hair can be smoothed out without heat if it is well moisturized. My ends are straight after I put them into bantu knots.
  9. Dry, crinkly, zigzaggy ends are the devil. There is no hope for them because they lack moisture and are porous. Snap snap, so snip snip.

Natural kinky hair is beautiful when it is well moisturized. I wouldn't change it for anything.

Wow, you gon have me stalking Samantha! What's in that DC, Sam? I NEVER feel like my hair is moisturized enough.

Been natural for 10 years, Started transitioning in Oct 97', BC'd in July 98'. Used to be scissor happy up until Dec 05 when I let this "stylist" press my hair, she damaged it horribly. In Dec 06, I cut the damage off to about 3 in long (3 in long stretched). And now, I'm just letting it grow, only trimming once a year until I reach my WL goal. I'm a little past SL now, and I am loving it! I never set any hair goals b4, and now by setting goals and leaving the scissors alone, I'm experiencing greater progress than ever b4.

I'm not at 3 years yet. I actually just had my 2 year anniversary as a natural. This is the longest time that I've remained relaxer free. I'm loving the journey.

I feel BillBackers siggie with where's my scalp. That's how I feel everyday.

I'm about an inch or two shy of APL. The back might be already there, but my front has some catching up to do.

That's a bad arse braid out/ twist out/ plain ol' out on ya!

Well, I've been natural for 7 years ( I transitioned for about 7 months before chopping the first time). Before I did another big chop back in May, I was APL. I would have been longer, but I had tons of breakage the first year because I was always playing in my hair, then I was just scissor happy fpr awhile. LOL.

I've been natural for 4 years now and I'm 3 inches from the waist.:yay:
I just wear my hair in protective styles and try not to use too much heat.

Well I've been natural for over 10, but only growing my hair out for the past 3. Stretched in the back I am almost at my goal of APL. My sides are past collarbone length. And the front is at the bottom of my chin.

November 19 2008 will make four years, I started my transition in November 2003 and did a chop in 2004 been natural every since. I'm at armpit length, it would be longer if, my hair didn't grow at a snails pace and if I wasn't so very scissor happy, I despise uneven hair and split ends.

Well my last BC was in Nov 2005, so this Nov will be my 3yr mark. And I am grazing APL stretched.

I've been natural for 3 years and 2 months.

I'm less than 2 inches from BSL and this is with cutting 5 inches of color off (over a 2 year period)

I'm satisified with my hair I just wish it was a little thicker.

I went natural because I thought my hair would look fuller, but I was so wrong.

Last time I checked I was past APL in July. I think I'm moving toward BSL, however I plan on trimming off at least an inch of hair within the next week- so I may be back to my July start point.

DANG, I'm still here. And I last posted in August. I did get two trims since then, but DANG. My hair is thick, thick, thick, but I want length, length, length.

Its been 4 years since I've decided to go natural and My length at its longest (at the end of Nov. 2008) I was an inch and a half away from brastrap straightened, but I became bored with the bland long length of my hair so I cut away 4 to 5 inches. I like my shorter do, but I do miss the length lol

I big chopped in June 2004 to about 1-2 inches. Now my hair is between the top and the bottom of my brastrap.

Now my hair is about 1 inch from the top of my brastrap (about 23" from the front of my head). I was going to wait until I reach waist length to trim, but I wanted my ends to look decent when I straightened my hair (I hadn't trimmed since I big chopped so the bottom of my hair was longer than the top and it made my ends look thinner). Last year I gradually trimmed about 4".
