What hair care faux pas did you make before coming here that you honestly didn't think were bad- or at least not that bad? :lachen:

I'll start: I honestly didn't think it was bad/wrong to relax my entire head. Yeah, yeah I know only the new growth- and of course the times I got it done at a salon, that is what they did! But at home- oh no. I would relax from root to tip! I thought my ends needed it- they were frizzy! Lol. Surprisingly, my hair was still growing pretty good- I just kept cutting it though!

I honestly thought nothing of using a fine tooth comb to do my hair and I would use it in the shower- when my hair was wet- eek- starting at the roots! I thought I was doing a good job detangling!

I honestly didn't think heat was bad. I would flat iron maybe three times a week- and on hair that needed to be washed. And I would blow dry every wash- I didn't think air drying was for me... :sekret:

1. Oiling my scalp with all those petroleum/mineral oil-laden products to combat my dry scalp. :nono:

2. Only washing my hair once every 2 weeks. My hair appreciates co-washes/poo washes twice a week now.

These were wrong for my hair, and thanks to LHCF, i have learned what is right for it!

1. Thought washing my hair once every 2-6 weeks was ok

2. Used Pink Oil like it was something special

3. NEVER slept with any scarf on my head unless I had just gotten my hair done that day.

4. Used blow dryers and curling irons at the highest setting possible and the curling iron was used daily ( since being on this site and going to the dominicans I havent used a curling iron in YEARS).

5. Cutting my hair ( no trim but CUT) every 6 weeks after a relaxer is the only way it would grow. God I was stupid with this one :ohwell:

6. I could NEVER do my hair on my own.

I flat ironed my hair while it was wet all the time and I thought hot oil treatments were for deep conditioning.

1. the mineral oil greases on my scalp
2. i thought it was worse when long hairs fell out with the bulb.... I actually felt better when i saw the short hairs.
3. I used oil or grease to flatiron.
4. it didn't even occur to me that it was better to use direct heat on clean hair.
5. oh and only sleeping with a headtie for a couple of nights after i got my hair done.

The only thing that saved me was that i was lazy and had a great hairstylist.

I thought Dr Miracles relaxed hair poison was a good moisturizer. I thought it was ok to not put any moisturizer on my hair ( for days) if I wanted to keep a straight look. Never mind the fact that my hair was dry as straw.

gettin REALLY tight braids and not washing my hair "so the style would last longer"

I never thought it was wrong ...

1. using heat on my hair until it sizzled.
2. to not wash my hair until time for another relaxer ( i know right?? )
3. to tear through my hair with a comb (i thought as long as it wasn't nappy, I was good)

-Moisturizing with Biosilk.

-Greasing my scalp.

-Sleeping with a cotton bandana OCCASIONALLY.

-Not washing my braids throughout the entire month.

Wash only on Relaxer days :burning:

Never Moisterize :pullhair:

Flat Iron DAILY:blush:

Geta glued in weave ( went from past SL back up to NL with that little disaster)

In 2002, I was:

flat ironing almost every morning (I remember having a patch of dry crispy hair at the front)

not wearing a satin/silk scarf

not deep conditioning @ all

I think that what is bad and what is good is all relative.

Some think that relaxing every 4-6 weeks is bad. I did that before and still do and I have no problems.

Some think that using heat is bad. Some can do it everyday w/ no problems while if others do it 3x a week they get breakage.

Its all relative.

I used to do that. Didnt want to wash the relaxer out. :lachen::lachen::lachen::lachen:

I didn't think neutralizing with suave strawberry was that bad after a relaxer  afterall, it's not like it made my hair fall out :lachen:

I didn't think there was anything wrong with using heat everyday afterall, it didn't make my hair fall out.

I also didn't think there was anything wrong with relaxing once a month...now THAT did make my hair fall out :ohwell:

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of for now...

1. Not washing until relax days. After all, my hair would just turn into a giant fluff ball when I did try to wash it on my own, so there was no point.

2. Relaxing every 6 weeks when I didn't always need it.

3. Never moisturizing -- I didn't know I had to.

4. Using lots of grease on my scalp, thinking that it moisturized.

5. Whenever I did wash my own hair (rarely, less than once a year) I'd get my mother to put the rollers on and she'd use that setting lotion and wraps, so my hair would be dry, knotted, and puffy!

6. Using hot rollers on my hair daily.

7. Listening to people who had ugly, dry, dyed hair about what to do with my own hair. :nono: I didn't listen to everything they said, but enough.

1. Greasing my scalp to ease dryness.
2. Improper combing
3. Use any old shampoo and never any conditioner.:nono:
4. Not buying great products because of the price even though I could afford it.

I did a lot of the same stuff you ladies are talking about but also the worse thing I used to do was using plastic bristle brushes to rip through my hair with water AND gel in it to try to get the slickest, sleekest ponytail that I could and then securing it very tightly! It's no wonder my egdes were always short and raggety and practically SCREAMING for mercy!! It wasn't enough that I used to relax the edges FIRST to make sure they got the straightest... Now that I think about it, I'm lucky to still have hair on my nape and front. :lachen:

"perming" my hair every time it look dull or a little tangled.
I was so dumb I thought my new growth was the stylist not relaxing my bone straight hair good

1. Only washing my hair when I replaced by braids (every 8-10 weeks)
2. No deep condtioning
3. Only slapping chemical laden grease in my hair when it began to itch a lot, or when I saw the flakes (maybe every 2 weeks)

Okay DITTO everything that you said!!!
I especially like to flatiron my hair with grease like the blue Ultra Sheen, I thought that was just additional protection for my hair.

Relaxing to the ends( I didn't do this for years until a "hairstylist" told me it would help my dry ends) uh huh

Using relaxer to take glue ins out. I only used glue on my bangs and I wondered why they never grew.

Putting alot of gel on my hair for a ponytail and not washing for a week.

To blowdry and flatiron my hair (on the highest settings!) on wash day with no heat protectant or anything... i wanted to have lightweight hair!!

What pisses me off is that my hair was longer when i was doing that than it is now.... but my ends were see through and raggedy!

:lachen: at the bolded. Me too!:lachen:

Yooo I thought my new growth was my hair reverting after a relaxer. Sooooo damn dumb. Smh @ myself.

Everything listed except relaxing the entire head. I use to jump out the shower (b4 putting in leave-in conditioner) and ram that small tooth comb through my hair and complain, "Why is my hair breaking!" Then I would blow-dry and flat iron right after.

O yea...NO HEAT PROTECTANT!:nono:
