Why is it that when I express my love for my hair I get railroaded with "relaxed hair is pretty too". All of the beautiful relaxed heads here, I don't have to be told that. It just seems that when I say I like my hair people get defensive but they can talk about their relaxed hair all day. When they say they need a perm and it was 3 weeks since their last application I don't give them the unwanted advice. I compliment those people but when I say something about my natural hair suddenly people accuse me of downing relaxed hair. It must just be the people I'm around...

It is. They sound a bit insecure

:look: Sounds like a guilty conscience to me - anytime people immediately jump defensive about something - it's rarely about you, it's some issue they have (and are hiding from) within themselves...... :ohwell:

I think it's the lack of understanding. Some people seem to think that natural hair is hard to manage and style options are limited. They ignorant of the versatilty. So, I'm guessing that they're probably wondering why you're still natural. Shake them haters off!

*I think your hair is beautiful!*

I agree that it may be the folks you are around. This happen to me twice so I just don't talk about hair to those folks.

I may compliment them here or there but that's it. They kept saying that I was trying to "turn them." One said, "I don't see how you do the natural thing" and all I said was "you would if you tried it". :perplexed

Forget those people girl! Love your hair b/c it is beautiful, I understand your frustration though.

What brought this on is that I said I don't like to wear my hair loose because I can't keep my hands out of it. I like the way it feels. And this girl says, "here she goes." Here I go what? First of all, she asked why I don't wear my hair down a lot. I really think she was trying to be funny but she didn't like my answer...the slut! I try not to talk about hair and especially not my hair because of this attitude. But let them talk about their hair, they go on and on. I say nothing. I'm starting to take it personal.

:lachen::lachen:

Well we like your hair :)

I can see both sides of the picture.

I love my natural hair (and yours too :yep:) and I'm not ashamed of it in the least. Many people still have a negative view of natural kinky hair.

On the other hand some naturals love their hair a bit too much. So much that they can put people with relaxed hair down or feel that they are somehow superior.

Being humble is a virtue, but if you got it going on you should be able to enjoy it too!

I agree! If a girl went on and on about being relaxed or whatever, than someone who is natural can go on and on. The rule applies to everyone, long, short, relaxed, natural, real, or fake.
And sometimes, it does have something to do with that individual and not you!

if it is a person with LHCF worthy hair, like her relaxer is on point (hair does not have to necessarily be long but it better be healthy), i would not be as mad as if it were a person with short/brittle/broken off/what have you hair. just throwing that out there.

That's just the thing. I don't talk about my hair because I KNOW they don't want to hear it. What pisses me off is that they can talk all day about perms and relaxers giving me glances. And no, they don't have LHCF relaxed hair. I've even told them about this site. This is why they think I'm hair crazy. I guess they figure if I'm on a hair site I should be permed not natural. And SHE always ask me about my hair. She's the one the initiated the conversation. I could see if I constantly walked around with my hands in my hair saying my hair is better than all of yours! I don't think this nor do I portray that. Like some of you said, there may be other issues...but their hers, not mine.

awww sweetie don't let those heffas bother you. I was in the BSS about a month ago and these heffas saw me and started rolling their eyes and "suddenly" one of them started talking very loudly about how much she loves her perm and how much she needs one. They were literally following me around the BS talking about their perms. You just need to ignore people like. OH and I HATE when people tell me why don't you just get a perm, your hair will look longer....

I don't think it's possible to love your hair too much. You can love your natural hair to the maximum extent, and it will still have nothing to do with putting down other people's (relaxed) hair.

Loving something does NOT = hating it's opposite.

I loooove my coily hair (the new growth), but doesn't stop me from thinking my Chinese friend's stick straight shiny hair is beautiful as heck.

The OP didn't say she downed anyone's hair. All she said was that she liked her OWN.

I think the problem comes when people see everything as binary opposites. And drag in *hair politics* into every discussion of our hair, and want to start some ridiculous relaxed vs. natural war. For me natural hair is just the hair that grows out of my head, nothing political about it.

I always get responses like "oh well my hair would look like that too if it was natural" or "I used to have thick hair like that but I don't have the time....." these comments are always unsolicited and are usually after they asked me about my hair!! I don't get it. I really don't care what they do to their hair!

 People always use that lame excuse, "My hair would look that that if I were natural" or my favorite, "My hair would be that long if I had the patience."

Please.
