Can someone please tell me what flat iron silkening is?
What is the process, what products do you use, what is the tecnique?
Anything?

Thanks in advance.

A stylist in TN calls it a silk-out and charges $65 and the results are impressive. Her technique was simply... she used Design Essential products and the Paul Mitchell smoothing iron. She divided the hair into small sections and slowly flat iron the hair. After the process, she applied Paul Mitchell skinny serum and styled.

It gives your hair a silky look and feel as if you just received a relaxer. I tried it twice to stretch my chemical treatments. Anyone can achieve the same look with smoothing products, a flatiron and time.

There is a stylist here in DC that does this and it's nothing but flat ironing. No special products. He uses a marcel flat iron (one that goes on the heating unit, like straightening combs).

LOL yeah I was going to say the same exact thing. They're just using their marketing ploys just to sell you an expensive flat iron, lol. You can do this yourself, just find the right products and flat iron in small sections. If you want more of a "bump" or body with the hair, flat iron it with a slight curving motion instead of straight out. My hair always looks relaxer straight after a flat-iron and all I use are Sebastian Potion 9 and Salerm 21. Love the results.

It's nothing but flat ironing your hair using minimal products so that you hair won't be weighed down... "silkening" is just a fancy term used to sell you expensive services...

^^^^^ what she said...:perplexed I have NO idea what silkening is now...

Silkening is nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Your hair is flatironed. period. It's supposed to feel like silk:look: Even the guy that does it here in DC said himself "It's a modern day press n' curl":yep:

You can achieve the same results at home with a good flatiron (don't need the marcel kind), products and technique (parting your hair in smaller sections is best).

I got this process done years ago and it silked the hair right out of my head!!! of course she did this directly after a relaxer!!!:wallbash:

Well damn... I thought it was something special:lachen:

I do this mess almost twice a week with my CHI and some Fantasia ic and a fine tooth comb... I guess they'll call anything by a different name to get us to pay for it.

After finally finding some other post, I thought there was some type of protein treatment that was put on the hair to make it look straight and give it that swing, maybe that was just for naturals.

Now, I think I'm even more confused.:ohwell:

I think we've been bamboozled:yep:

O.K.!!! I am natural, and I have seen other naturals with their hair relaxer straight that say they have had their hair silkened. That sounds to me like they have used something other than a flat iron.

As many times that I have used my fake Chi with little product if none at all, and taken my time to take little sections and pass it with that flat iron, it never came out that straight.

I wish I never broke my maxiglide, I guess I better just shell the money for the new version of it.:wallbash:

Ok She just flat Ironed her hair.....:perplexed

:scratchch I thought silkening was using some kind of speacial product or chemical to loosen curls :spinning:

Well, I thought I would give it another try because I needed to hurry up and get my starter pics for the OCT/MT challenge.

I washed with all three products of OCT just as the instructions say, (shampoo, ovation cell therapy, rinse) I then blowdried and then flatiron with my bootleg chi flatiron and I could not believe it! I have moveable hair.

I dont know how long it's going to last, but it's moving:yep: Not quite as pretty as the silkening that I saw, but close.

Still dont know the total story on the silkening (too many different stories), but I will find out.

You do need product to get your hair silky, if you don't use anything you are damaging your hair, which will cause it not to shine the same.

My natural hair gets just as shiny and smooth as the relaxed hair does when I flatiron it, even the places where I cut off relaxed ends way back, the natural ends were silky as well:yep:, even on the 4a sections and the 4b (for a while)...

You need to get your hair as straight as possible while blowdrying (I think thats what that woman did in the video), which probably requires some tension and good product. I would recommend blowdrying with CHI Silk Infusion or Giovanni Direct Leave-In, depending on how comfortable you are with silicones.

Then flat iron your hair with a fine tooth comb, sectioning your hair off in 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick sections at the largest. The more body you want, the bigger sections, and the sleeker you want your hair the smaller the sections. If you have very thick (or tightly curled or dense) hair you want to do smaller sections as well. Detangle each section with the finer tooth comb after using the wide tooth comb, then dip your finger in some CHI Silk infusion or some other heat protectant straightening serum (Biosilk, fantasia ic, etc... they all do the same, you just have to figure out which works with your hair better!) and rub the serum over that section of hair. Do not make your hair feel greasy or limp (remember you already have some on from blowdrying so you only need a little!). Then go over it with the fake CHI.

I think that silkened is just a term for professional flatironing. And I think professional flatironing is just paying someone to do it for you... like professional relaxing. I mean you can get the kit for 5 dollars or pay someone 70 bucks but if you know what you are doing you can get the same results:yep:

I agree, I did not see the big deal, maybe I was missing something. Her hair did not look like the silkening that i've seen.

There is another process called Silkener for naturals that the ladies at Miss Jessie's used. It's basically a texturizer (chemical). That does loosen the curl pattern.

Use no products after drying your hair unless its light weight.
Use a fine tooth comb while holding the flatiron AFTER IT and move them both down your hair in a small section.

Boom, thats it.

My old hairdresser in ATL used this method when she did my hair. I just love the way my hair blow in the wind. i am curretly trying to get the some look, but i need more work. Plus, she used a Paul Mitchell Soothing Flatiron. I may have to breakdown and buy it in order to get this Silky hair look.

Everything she said.

I am sorry but who ever that stylist is made that term up on her own. All this is, is a professional knowing how to really do your hair well. My stylist does the same thing. She actually tried the new Paul Mitchell smoothing flat iron on my hair the weekend before last. She puts the supper skinny serum in my hair before she flat irons it out and it comes out bone straight all over and I absolutely love it. It is just the result of someone else doing your hair that knows what they are doing!
