I take"Slow Fe" Iron tablets they work very well ! (I 've had anemia all my life too.) :yep: I don't have any side efects from it !!!!!!!! You can get it at any wal-mart , walgreens, cvs, etc...
you ladies might want to try it.
Thanks for the tip~!

YES Always have a checkup before taking Iron supplements. I was diag. by my doctor, so I have to have blood test about 3x a year or so.

Yes extremely! I had to get iron infusions through an IV on a weekly/monthly basis for several years. Last year I had a NovaSure procedure to control my very heavy cycles, and I haven't had a cycle since then (thank the Lord)!!! My anemia has been under control since then. Ironically, taking 5 mg of biotin everyday is also helping to maintain my iron levels and red blood cell count. Who would have thunk it?

I'm getting iron infusions now and you had to get them for several years? Hmmmmm....what is NovaSure and how do they do the procedure?

Me too. I have had transfusion and take iron supplements. I also had a procedure two years ago to stop my heavy periods.

I'm not, but at one time my parents thought I was. I am taking vitamins with Iron and eating alot more greens in order to prevent me from getting anemia.

Yes, unfortunately. When I start a cycle of infusions, I usually have them every week for about 4 months, then I go to every other week for 4 months, then to every month if my ferritin and blood levels come up high enough. After about a year, I went for a year with just monitoring and my levels plummeted so I started the whole thing over but stayed on the infusions until I had the NovaSure. I'm due for a one-year review now. I would say I had infusions on a regular basis for 5 or 6 years. Sometimes I had to get stuck 5 or 6 times to find a vein...anemic veins are usually very small. Anyway, the NovaSure is a newer technique for the endometrial ablation. It destroys the endometrial lining using a burning techinque. I had mine in the hospital under general anesthesia, but it only took about 30 minutes from start to finish. The procedure itself takes about 5 minutes to complete, no cutting...it's minimally invasive. I recovered with some cramping, but not as bad as my monthly cramps. I could actually have gone back to work the next day, but I had it on a Friday so I had the weekend to sleep off the anesthesia. Once the lining heals up from being burned from the instrument that is used, a good scenario would be much lighter periods...a great scenario is no periods at all. Please look online....there is tons of information about the procedure at the NovaSure site. I saw pictures of mine and I expected the inside of my uterus to look burnt, but it actually looked really white and fluffy with some tan areas, instead of initally very pink and smooth. For me, it was a great alternative to a regular endometrial ablation or a hysterectomy. HTH!!

Wow. I was wondering why I couldn't walk from my car to my apartment without doubling over to catch my breath. I was always tired, and was getting these patches in my head. I couldn't run a mile like I used to.

Right after New Year's, I started getting intermittent pain near my heart. Wasn't chronic, but totally unusual and scared the crap outta me. I had given up my strong coffee for this year's resolution cuz I was getting crazy arrythmia that made me panic. Plus I was feeling my heart beat HARD for no apparent reason. I went to the doc and had a CBC done. The next day, my doc blew up my home, work, AND cell phones, telling me to go the hospital STAT!

Turns out I was heading toward heart failure! The chest pain was telling me that it was working TOO hard because I wasn't getting enough iron to transport oxygen to my organs.

So I was hospitalized a couple weeks ago and got FOUR units of blood and was discharged to take ferrous sulfate 3 times a day plus folic acid and vitamin C. My mom has me drinking lots of low-fat milk to prevent constipation (it works!) I feel MUCH better (wonder if this is how vampires feel? LOL!), but the weirdest thing happened afterward: I had a lot of shedding breakage, but I got it under control after stepping up my co-washes and ACV rinses. I'm now noticing that my hair has gotten thicker and I'm thinking about going back natural.

Ladies, PLEASE don't hesitate to get treatment if you're terribly anemic. Heart disease/failure kills more women each year than breast cancer and AIDS.

Sorry that I ran my mouth...and HTH,

Pink Gator

I get anaemic sometimes, never for prolonged periods though. I never take prescribed iron tablets, I usually get some natural remedy from a health food store, take that for a few weeks and I am back to normal.

I feel like I am anaemic now so I need to start taking my health shop remedy again (Floradix - don't know if it is available outside the UK).

Thank you so much for this information. I will look this up.

This sounds like my problem!

My heart has been damaged a little as while by the anemia. And the anemia also has been a side effect of my fiberoids.

I had fibriods the size of oranges removed two and half years ago because the bleeding was so heavy, it had me two points away from needing a transfusion. Needless to say, women should really watch those heavy, heavy periods. All of the veggies in the world won't allow your red blood cell count to rise to a normal range if your bleeding to death every month.

The wierd thing is, my period has never been heavy so i dunno y im anaemic. i dunno if it can be inherited coz my mum has really heavy ones.

I've been anemic for years. I take the slow FE pills, but I haven't noticed a boost in energy. I also haven't eaten red meat in 15 years. I recently found out that I have an irregular heartbeat, I'm always cold, tiredddddd, no energy and my hair grows very slowly.

Dr. said I was so low that I needed to get iron from food, preferably beef liver, for a period of 6 months before I'd become regular. YUCk, but I started eating it and noticed a dramatic difference in my energy levels. my mind can't stomach the liver.

I'm back to just taking iron, but its not enough.

Yesterday I had a burger from Burger King. Been years since I've done this. WOW!! I felt better within hours. I even had enough energy to workout, which I haven't consistently in 2 months. I was even able to wake up early this morning.

All that to say, I'm making myself eat a burger once a week. Who knows, just may help my hair grow and stop this irregular heartbeat.
Mine is so severe, that I cannot have the heart treatment that I need to stop my irregular heart beats. Which is also a cause from the anemia.

In other words, my anemia has damaged my heart, slighty, very slighty.

I am anemic. i've been anemic for as long as i can remember. that explains a lot about my hair breakage. I need to go to the doctor stat.

i had the cryoablation done and it help with my anemia about 25% (which is EXCELENT compared to what i had before)...now, my cycles only last about 4-5 days. iron doesn't stay in my body no matter what i use...beef helps, but i get sick eating it (i am queasy when it comes to meat).

wow this is a great thread, i am anemic and i think i have been so for a while. I am an ice fiend like some of you ladies, and im always freezing. I was so happy when i found out sonic sold bags of ice, you rarely see me without a cup of ice within 2 feet. I need to go to the doctor because the past month i have been feeling increasingly sluggish...hopefully i wont have to do transfusions or anything cause that scares me to death.

I actually have Beta Thalassemia Minor, which is often confused for anemia or sickle cell.

Yes I did read about that. How that can often be confused with Anemia or have Sickle Cell Anemia.

Also too, the main problem that I am having is that there are really any none-invasive procedures to remove fibiroids if you still want to have children.

I don't want surgery! I don't want to be cut and I really don't want to take off 6 weeks of work to recover from surgery.

Yet I don't want to have the option of having children later taken away from me because I choose a removal option that would let me heal in like a week. It's not fair and the anemia can cause blood loss during surgery.

Plus, my hair :nono: I mean my hair is trying to push pass certain lengths, but I can tell that the anemia is taking it's toll because it still sheads and pulls out easily.

I voted Yes. But I am actually borderline anaemic, not fully anaemic.

I am always cold. My hands feet and nose are always like ice.

And once I went to a blood drive to give blood and was turned away because my iron was too low.

I felt so dejected!

i used to be extremely anemic. I would have real heavy periods. But i take iron tablets now and it had helped. Its still low, but i take them everyday, so its getting better and not worse.

i am... or so i've been told... i plan on getting a second opinion.
When i was little i too was addicted to ice... to me it was like a meal, I would crave it badly. Also, i would always be cold and nose bleeds were very common. I didn't get my period until i was 12/13 and they were very heavy but didt realyl last all that long. I haven't had any symptoms until recently, i'm always cold, my blood pressue is stupid low, i'm always tired, and its ALWAYS COLD! But my hair grows regular pace and my periods are "short and sweet" lol
I've also noticed that if i eat at least 3-5oz of chicken a day or one sm/med steak once a week... i feel way better. go figure

yes, i am. i'm always forgetting that i am too. i will sometimes get very tired and have continual headaches and my anaemia is often one of the last things that i will point to as the culprit. sometimes, it never even crossed my mind that this is the cause. it may well affect my growth so i'm going to buy some iron tablets soon as well as consuming more iron through my diet.

i am slightly anemic. i too found out when my mother needed surgery and that wanted to keep extra blood on hand just in case she needed it. I have type o blood. But anyway, I couldn't give any because my iron is low.

my hands are always cold too.

I was told I'm anemic as well. I was in 2004 because of fibroids and had them removed. Now I've been diagnosed again with it and was told to take iron supplements. I plan to go to the doctor again in May to check my levels, however I want them to do more testing to find the cause of it. I don't want to walk around thinking everything is fine when it could be my heart or something else.
