IF your hair grows in an upside down "W" or "V" pattern, what would u do?

I chose even it out, because that's how I keep my hair. When I've had that upside down pattern emerge, it was because of neglect or manipulation to some part of my hair, rather than the growth pattern. When the manipulation stopped in that area, there was no more breakage. Also, I trimmed it because I like to wear my hair out.

This exactly how I feel. I also had the exact same experience except mine happened due to neglect and carelessness. I recently cut off the rest of the damage and me and my hair are much happier:).

My hair used to grow in an upside-down "V" pattern because my hair practices were causing my hair to break at the nape and centerback of my head. Unknowingly, I was allowing my hair to rub and break along my shoulders/clothing. In addition, collars were tearing up my nape. As a result, I was constantly trimming the front and sides to even things out and losing my progress at the same time.

Since gaining knowledge here and other hairboards, I'm much more careful and gentle with handling my hair. I also began protecting and regularly moisturizing my hair, especially the nape area. In time, my nape and centerback caught up with the rest of my hair. Interestingly, my hair grows pretty evenly....Imagine that!

I am trying so hard to hold off cutting. I have a little "v" and I am hoping my sides will catch up.

good to know.

My hair is shorter in the front and in the crown than the sides and the back, and has always been that way - even when I was relaxed.

I voted for evening my hair out when it all reaches my goal length. I never wear my hair straight and rarely wear it down (only in braid/twist outs or rollersets). If my hair is out, it's usually a fro, and at that point it's hard to tell what's what due to shrinkage anyways.

mine too..thats why im gonna leave it alone for now even though im soooo tempted to even it out...I rarely wear it str8 anyways

I would leave it alone. It might fill in on it's own later on. Bubblnbrnsuga's hair did that. She had the upside down W thing going on but it all filled in on its own.

I agree with this entire post. I 'thought' my hair grew in that upside down W and my stylists had me convinced of the same:rolleyes: Once I dumped them and started wearing protective styles consistently, it all grew out:thumbsup:

My belief is that my hair looked that way in the back due to stylist ABUSE and the way that I wrapped my hair nightly:wallbash:

Baby your hair and give it a chance to correct itself:D

Thanks....

My hair doesn't grow that way but I had it in an inverted bob. I just recently had it evened up but I let it grow in alot before I did that.:yep:

If my hair had a W shape, I would even out first. With a V shape, if I obsessed over that I would be forever cutting my hair. That's just how it grows and I've come to like it better than blunt ends. For me, it makes it look thicker and healthier.

When my hair is wet/damp, it has that "W" appearance. The reason is that my hair is mostly 4b, but a section in the center back of my head is like 4c or something...it shrinks up more than the rest. When my hair is dry and straightened, it looks all the same length, though. So, I think I'll just leave my hair alone until I get to my next major goal, WL, then do a U-shaped trim. That way, I'll be trimming off the top and sides mostly and not so much that "different" back section.

I'd wait till I passed my goal length to even out. I'd probably do small dustings every 3-6 months but no trims at all until I passed my goal length. You know your hair is growing like that so what's the point of cutting off progress? If you wear your hair up or curly, no one's going to know but you anyway.

That's what I would do. And I am so with BraveGirl. Stop cutting off my damn hair!!! Don't be a hater!! That's one of the main reasons I stop going to salons....

my hair is kind of growing like that now but, i notice that it is starting to even out on its own. there are very people whose hair grows evenly anyway. just wait until you reach your goal length to even things out. if you start cutting now it will just take you longer to get to where you want to be and you will probably just get discouraged. atleast when you do cut it you will know that your hair does grow and did reach your goal.

yea...i decided to leave it alone for now...last August I evened it out and it grew back the same way within 6 months:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash: so for now no evening out until @least APL for me:perplexed

I feel that since it grows that way Id just trim it and then do a nice blunt chop once I hit my goal. Completely cutting it off now is only giving it an opportunity to grow back. In the meanwhile you also may be able to coax the shorter hairs to grow.

I hate, REALLY REALLY hate to have empty ends and a zigzag in my hair, unless i intentionally want it, so i normally trim every month. I do think that the hair absorv easily the products in it, if it's healthy. I'm not attached to any lenght, i just want my hair to look pretty, even if is short or long.

I just have a habit of evening out my hair as it grows.......Every relaxer I get a trim.

When I grew to APL (before transitioning), I trimmed along the way because I had the W and for me I'd rather beautifully thick ends versus just being able to say my hair is long.

For MY hair it looked terrible and unhealthy when the W was present even though my ends and hair was very healthy. With a fresh even trim, it always looked thicker and healthier and that's the hair I've always loved. Now that I'm natural, I'll cross that road when I plan to press. :look: I gave up my quest for length for 1.5 yrs, and now that I'm back on the quest to reach APL in 09 and BSL by June 10, I guess I have to figure something out.

ETA: Even though I did it this way, doesn't mean I wasn't disappointed with how slow my hair seemed to progress... but all in all, I still reached a milestone goal of APL even if it took me 3-6 months longer than it would have had I not trimmed it even. But doing it the other way, I would have been able to claim it earlier with only the W tips, and not all the hair :(

I'd grow a little past my goal and then even it up; I'm transition with braids therefore any unevenness doesn’t really bother me at the moment.

I have the "V" thang goin' on. I trim a little at a time until it is all even. I just got it under control by using deep condish only! It tok me long enough to find a cure!

It depends on the person's goal.

a. If any length at the quickest time is of importance and you wear your hair up religiously then hold off on the cutting til goal.

b. If you wear your hair down several times a year and don't want to walk around with W ends then a nice trim/cut to full length should be considered?

I opt for the last..I want a nice blunt/slight U in the back at the year's end. I'm willing to wait the years.

mine grows in an upside down W shape...I was gonna even it out tonight but will wait until I get several more inches.
