IF your hair grows in an upside down "W" or "V" pattern, what would u do?

That was my intentions. Until my stylist cut off an inch of my hair. What the puck is the point of growing it if every daggone time somebody wants to cut my ends! Let them be jagged until I am READY to cut. And for the record, a TRIM is only 1/8 of an inch. A BIG CHOP is goddang inch.

I'd wait till I passed my goal length to even out. I'd probably do small dustings every 3-6 months but no trims at all until I passed my goal length. You know your hair is growing like that so what's the point of cutting off progress? If you wear your hair up or curly, no one's going to know but you anyway.

I chose even it out, because that's how I keep my hair. When I've had that upside down pattern emerge, it was because of neglect or manipulation to some part of my hair, rather than the growth pattern. When the manipulation stopped in that area, there was no more breakage. Also, I trimmed it because I like to wear my hair out.

I would leave it alone. It might fill in on it's own later on. Bubblnbrnsuga's hair did that. She had the upside down W thing going on but it all filled in on its own.

I made APL. Except for my sides which are shorter. My back is APL. I'm having a VERY difficult time NOT cutting my hair. I haven't gotten a trim since May when I finally had to do a BIG cut to get rid of all my damaged ends from the summer/cholorine/sea salt/ etc. It was all bad.

Now though, my hair is not even. It's growing faster on the left than on the right and it makes me really unhappy. :nono:

I was going to try going a year without any cutting at all and I'll still stick with it. I'm trying to leave my hair alone by wearings wigs (new thing for me) right now. I only wear my hair out on the weekends. When I get to a year, I'll probably trim and then no more trims till my goal length. My goal length is waist length and I KNOW I cannot wait 2.5 more years to cut hair. :look:

I would wait. I used to chop it every couple of months, and no matter what, it still would grow like that. This would explain why I haven't retained length in 3 years. Mine is more like a "U" though, and it isn't upside down, but I feel you. The width of my nape is small, so it will always grow this way. I have vowed to dust every so often and trim/shape once a year.

That makes sense.

Anyone with success stories of letting it grow out before trimming? I've been contemplating this alot lately. i even posted a thread with a pic asking 'what is this mess' - lol. I dont even feel like wearing my hair out EVER - its so depressing. It makes you wonder - 'what am i doing wrong?' , 'is waiting making it worse?'. Anyone with encouragement/success stories pls chime in - TIA.

Yea, i think my hair does grow like this. But also, my hair plays tricks on me. Sometimes it looks full and even then other days it looks thin and kinda jagged.
Anyhoo...I am waiting until it grows to my goal length and then I will trim.
I put in a weave about 2 weeks ago, and I loved how my OWN hair looked when I put the weave in so I have fond memories of my hair right now, as far as the evenness goes.

I used to try to wait for the left side catch up. It is not going to happen. I've accepted this fact and don't worry about it. Not worth it. When I reach full MB, I THINK I will even then. :drunk:

Hmm, this makes sense. Puts things in perspective for me :yep:

I call mine the "Wu-Tang" because it looks like the bottom of the symbol for the Wu-Tang clan

I guess I'll wait and see what happens...

My hair has grown into a "V" pattern and I'm leaving it alone.:yep: I will trim my ends when needed but other than that I'm fine with my "V". The back and crown grows faster than the sides and front so I would always have to even it out.. :ohwell: I'm leaving my "V" alone.....

my thoughts exactly...

Thats what i used to do too...but it would grow back the same way so im contemplating leaving it alone!

I may hold on to an irregular growth pattern to reach a goal. But, if it gets to the point that I'm no longer enjoy my hair... I'm chopping!

My "W" made me real self-conscious when I wore my hair down. Always looking at the back w/a mirror before I went out :ohwell:. Most didnt notice the thinness, unless I pointed it out (doing my infamous 'can you see my thin part' check :nono:- w/friends and family). But it bothered me. I knew it was there. Sometimes I'd straighten then bun because I was sooo self-conscious... and I knew wearing my hair out would bring attention. *Not that Im all that, but folks very rarely saw my hair down or knew the length.* It really began to bother me, almost control me really. I wanted to wear my hair out and feel free. Style it, and not worry if someone was looking at the back of my head . I wanted to enjoy my hair, so.... I had my sister hack it off (from bra to shoulder/collar(?)) yesterday. :yep: It feels soo much thicker/healthier and looks sooo much better. I llllllike it!

me too! thats why I started this thread/poll to see what your opinions are.

Mine is growing like this too. Its due to some breakage I had just above the nape area due to using too much sulphur :perplexed!
I'm not cutting it, I have natural hair and very rarely wear it loose so no one can see it but me.

Im sure your hair looks great Lotus! I understand exactly how u feel...i straightened for the 1st time since my BC last night and this morning b4 i left the house for work i put it in a butterfly clip bcos i have an upside "V" thing going on:wallbash::wallbash::wallbash:.....I was SOOOOOOOOOO tempted to cut my progress but i figured Ill wait until I reach my goal since I RARELY wear my hair straight anyway...and its not obvious when in its natural state:yep:

Me too..and this is how i feel!
but dang Studio_gal...using too much sulfur can do that to u????

I waited and then evened it up but it grows in a V shape regardless. I just cut it off again and lost an inch or so and it will grow right back into that same damn shape. Why do I even fight it? :fistshake:

Yep. :yep:
You must ensure that you moisturise your hair thoroughly before adding sulphur to your scalp. Sulphur can/will dry your hair out which can cause breakage. I know better now - but didn't then.

Thanks Scarcity21! That's kinda what I did (I started stretching for health and ended up damn near natural- lol). Looking back on it (well the way I feel now, a whole 24hrs later- :look:) I wish I had chopped earlier. Im really excited about loosing my permed hair and learning to style my natural. Now tomorrow, I might be to'up, laying under the covers in my bed all day, eating icecream...:lachen:but today- I feel good.

I think it would depend on how I liked to wear my hair. If you wear a bun or a curly look, then the M or W wouldn't be too noticeable, and I would leave it alone.

If you like to wear your hair down and straight, then I would trim.

But that's just me.

And like another poster said, most of these things are more noticeable to you than it is to other ppl. Other ppl probably just think you have nice hair.

If your main priority is meeting a goal, then wear curly or protective styles & wait it out.

Even if you are wearing your hair down, the average person doesn't notice that stuff anyway. Hair-board standards and RL standards are two completely different entities.

i agree with everything u said...thanks!

My hair kept growing in the v shape and I cut about 2 inches off. Now its growing like that again and I just figured thats the way my hair grows so I'm going to leave it alone.
