The statistics that were in Jet are correct. Brown and black women are twice a likely as white women to get type 2 diabetes, which also comes with a side of heart diease, kidney diease, limb amputation and blindness. Obesity has a direct link to diabetes. Sorry to be morbid but, I spend my working day discussing type 2 diabetes and it's complications.

My real question is does anyone know how to do a nice "up do"? After my workouts my hair may not need to be washed but, it is wavy because I am natural and my scalp gets a little moist. I wash twice a week but, in between washes, I would like to wear it in a professional up do, something other than a bun--maybe a french twist, A lil sumthin sumthin professional w/ some natural curl to keep things sexy.:look:

I would like to know this too, I'm natural but I don't wet my hair every day, I have a ugly hairline, so I don't like to wear ponytails, I want to wear it up but can't think of way that my sides won't show and it still looks nice.

I love this thread!:D I am currently working out 4 times a week and am natural. My question is for everyone though. Does your cleansing routine change as the weather gets colder? I mean I don't mind having a wet head in the summer but I live in England and it's just too freaking cold to be walking around here like that 4 times a week. I was thinking of switching my workouts to the evenings so when I did rinse or wash I could just twist it up and let it dry overnight. What is everyone else doing these days?

I'm relaxed, I just invested in an ion blow dryer, I can't go to work with wet hair. I am going to do protein conditioners every two weeks, con-wash after each heavy workout, and deep conditon once per week. I just can't do that wet head thing. Sorry!!! My hair feels really great by the way. I am also wearing protective styles, like my UPA clip (phony Pony) and falls to minimize manipulating my hair, and I can still look good. That's a fall in my avatar... I think I got this hair thing down pat. Right now I'm using up products I already had in my cabinets, enhancing with honey (moisture) olive and jojoba oils in both my shampoos and conditoners. My hair feels great. So I don't have a particular product line I'm using yet, MUST use up all the stuff I have before I buy more! LOL

I'm starting Taekwondo lessons Thrusday!! Woo Hoo!!!

Going for a run in a few..

Peace and love ladies!

Janet

I run sun, tues, wed, thur and sat every week.

I wash my hair on saturday nights with shampooand tuesday nights with conditioner.

When my new growth is thick, I blow dry and flat iron on saturdays after deep conditioning. On tuesday I wash and apply leave-in, oil and allow my hair to air dry.

Usually I wear my hair in hats that are made of coolmax ( this material wicks the sweat from your head and causes it to evaporate faster). When I do this though, my hair ends up very dry and it is very hard to style it for the day.

Recently I have been oiling my hair prior to the run and pulling all of my hair into a high ponytail on top of my head and wrap the ends in a bun with a satin scrunci. After running, I have no time to wash or rinse my hair, so I just let it down and apply moisturizer and oil. I shake it out and it falls pretty well. (It ends up looking like a braidout). So far this has been working well. The sweat evaporates pretty well, because all of my hair is up and out of the way.

the best thing would be to conditioner wash after every workout with a cholesterol conditioner, shampoo every 5-7 days and clarify every 3-5 weeks!

i think it can be a blessing because your hair will not only grow faster from constant washing, but it wil be soft and kept away. i would keep my hair ina wet bun and go about my business. thinking about it, i wanna join a gym!

What else is a blessing is that, since I work out 5 days per week I am less inclined to use heat on my new growth because it will revert as soon as a sweat. So I don't bother. I work out first think in the morning, and the best thing that has worked for me is to keep my pin curls in. I work out, shower, and then after my head is not so sweated up (I do my makeup first) I take the pin curls out. My hair is just sweeping my shoulders so I've been using this as my primary protective style (when it's curly it's off my shoulders) I'll post a picture once I figure out how to...:look:

I agree with all that is being said. I workout most days 4-5 days per week, and it is impossible to keep my hiar looking straight, which is why I wear my hair in a bun most of the time. I Co Wash, or just do a cold water rinse when my hair feels especially weaty and disgusting. I find that making using a Ph balanced shampoo conditioner works to remove salt and all that.

Ok, this has been a lifetime dilemma of mine. I am an official gym rat I workout daily except on Sundays. I was natural a few years back because it really suited my active lifestyle, especially those TWA days. My hair grew out and super super thick and I just couldn't handle it anymore, so i texturized it and alternated between bunning, pincurls and cornrows. I've been fully relaxed now for two years. I had major breakage from not rinsing after working out and leaving it in a wet bun. Now I'm nursing it back with weekly conditioning. But I'm wearing it out everyday and manipulating it and my hair really thrives when I don't manipulate it at all. I'm wondering whether i should get a curly weave. I've had this style before where I co washed my hair daily. I think as long as i rinse the sweat out of my hair along with using the nioxin scalp therapy my hair should be good to go. I get bored with the same hair style but I will try to do this getting it redone every four weeks or so and giving my hair time to 'breathe' in between.

Yesterday I read an article in a magazine--forget which one--which recommended sprinkling your hair with dry shampoo before the workout. It stated that the shampoo would absorb the sweat incurred during the workout. I've never tried it and can't currently b/c I am recovering from surgery and thus can't workout but I'm going to try that when I can.
When I was working out vigorously, I just had to bite the bullet and either wear my hair back or put on a half or whole wig. I didn't have a problem if I'd work out at night, but I like to do my cardio in the morning and yes that woudl be a problem b/c my hair would be all sweaty. I used to even sometimes sit under the dryer after the workout and before work, but that was just too much.

Two things you could do. If youwanted a french twist, you could get one of those foam kind of banana shaped things, wrap the end of you hair around that and pit it. That would give you a nice french twist w/volume in the twisted part of it. The other thing, is to do a regular twist, or even just pull your hair back and use one of those combs, like this: (I don't necessarily endorse this brand I think her products are overpriced but this is just so you get the idea...) http://www.hsn.com/cnt/prod/default.aspx?webp_id=1341530&web_id=1341530&sf=bs&attr=161&prev=hp!sf!161

One of the primary reasons I decided to go natural was because of working out so often. I just couldn't see trying to curl my hair everday, not to mention the fact that it would have left my hair in horrible condition.

Now I either rinse my hair after a workout, apply leave-in and diffuse dry or put it in a ponytail. I usually rinse it a couple of times a week and shampoo on the weekend.

I had to make a decision between trying to have a straight style all the time or my overall health -- I chose my health.

CO washes are not cutting it anymore for me after the workouts...my scalp doesnt feel clean after (and just "rinsing" is not an option either)...I wash my hair either every day or every other day. Anyone have any suggestions for a 2 in 1 that gives good conditioning....I bought a bottle of Pantene and Im not impressed but I gotta find something...Any suggestions are welcome and thanks!

I'm transitioning AND I box/kickbox 4-5X a week. I'm putting my hair in braids later this month, it seems like the easiest solution to me. When I've had them in the past I didn't have scalp buildup b/c it was free to breath easily. Right now I wear a bun or french twist everyday with a headband or scarf. It keeps my edges smooth and creates a frame around my face so I can at least look cute from the front. :ohwell: I still get hit on at the gym so I figure it's gotta be working. I've also learned that if you aren't going to wash, it's best to leave your hair up until it dries and calms down. When I do rinse or wash I co-wash or use an ACV rinse and make sure to massage my scalp really well to get it clean.

I wear a bun daily, too, with a nice headband. I workout Monday through Friday. My hair is always nice and soft, but, after working out and sweating, my hair does dry out -- not in the front, but the hair in the bun dries out and feels tacky. However, it remains in the bun, so I am the only one who can tell how dry it has gotten after my workout. As for the front, it will frizz just the tiniest bit (thank goodness) when I sweat and I just brush it back once or twice in the locker room and it lays right back back down. I do wet my hair every night in some capacity.

I was thinking the other day that it is so much easier working out and sweating with natural hair than it was with relaxed hair. I am in my fifth month of working out and I never was able, in the past, to make it past eight weeks, mostly because the sweating in my head played havoc with my relaxed hair and I had not discovered LHCF yet back then. I rinse on Monday, cowash on Tuesday, wash on Wednesday, cowash on Thursday. Friday night, I will cowash, or (if I am not going out the house Saturday) I drench my hair in oil/butter for an overnight pre-poo. I wash, clarify, do a light or heavy protein on Saturday evening and a deep condition on Sunday. I do pay close attention to my scalp during the week and make sure that I keep it clean and de-gunked.

For the past two months i worked out 7 days a week 2.5 hours a day. I cannot keep a style. I JUST CO wash and put it up wet..
Im now 14 weeks post relaxer. I just leave it alone forced protective style and air dried.

Im not sure if this has been discussed in this thread, but what do ladies w/ necklength and shorter hair do? :perplexed: I see everyone else doing buns and updo's and all that. I cant do no updo. Its getting to cold for wash and go's. I may have to get braids eventually, but Im very afraid of braids drying my hair out. :nono: *sigh* its very frustrating... I dont want my hair to be the cause of me not working out. But trying to maintain a professional apperance w/ frizzy, puffy, 10weeks post after workout hair aint exactly happenin.

Just venting and looking for ideas.

Thanks to whoever pulled this thread up. I see it's from last year. I workout (I'm a walker but am considering joining a gym near me because they have kickboxing classes and I love kickboxing) and get sweaty in my head. I was wondering what to do as well. I see a lot of great tips.

I also agree that my body comes before my hair:yep:. I would never allow my hair to stop me from taking care of myself. What good is a lot of hair or a cute style if you are dangerously overweight and out of shape???:nono: Makes no sense...

Wow! Really impressed with the dedication you lot have with the whole working out thing. The most strenuous exercise I can maintain is a trip to the Fridge for some Ben & J's or Haagen Dazs or chocolate gateau, dang I'm hungry:look:

Kels – I feel ya, girl! Right now my hair is in a jaw/neck length bob. It does not bun, it does not wash and go and it does not "go up" period. I've been dealing with this problem for years and working out had wrecked havoc on my hair in the past. I would go to the gym on my lunch hour, sweat my hair completely out and have to try to flat iron the ends (which were dirty of course) so I could look presentable in my next meeting. I have had all of the gym styles for black women: cornrows, weave, and when my hair was a little longer, I had one of those shiny salon buns that resemble the salon ponytail, full of hair spray and pulled back with a ton of those little black rubber bands. I was constantly relaxing to get rid of the puffiness and cutting due to all the damage. Obviously I was not a LHCF member at that time.

Anyway, like Neenzmj, all this relaxing and cutting drove me to make a decision to go natural. I'm transitioning now and love it. To minimize my use of heat, I'm wearing my hair flat ironed for part of the week and wet set for the other. Each of these styles can handle one workout before I need to wash it. I found that bangs or hair in the face is what makes my hair look raggedy when it needs to be done so I have a variety of head bands to hold the bangs back when it needs it or for when I can't fit a co-wash/shampoo into my schedule. Normally, I have to plan my shampoos around my workout schedule. For example, if I'm working out 4 days per week (T, W, F, S) I'll do my Tues. and Wed. workouts in the evening, then co-wash and flat iron my hair Wed. evening. That will give me Thurs. and most of Fri. with fresh hair. Then I'll do my Fri. workout in the evening and my Sat. workout in the morning, then shampoo and wet set my hair Sat. after the workout. That will give me the rest of Sat, Sun., Mon. and most of Tuesday with nice hair. Plus, I don't go more than two days in a row between workouts. To put it another way, I will have only one work-day, Wed., and two evenings, Tues. and Fri., with tired hair. This month I've joined the September workout challenge so I've modified the schedule. But you get what I'm saying. When I stop roller setting due to my transition out of the relaxer, I plan to buy a 3/4 wig and flat twist the front, baggy the back and wear the wig over the bag for those days.

Bumping for some good 2 in 1 shampoos that give a decent amount of slip! I just gotta wash every or every pother day to get that sweat outta my scalp...the CO washes arent making my scalp feel breezy after the workouts, LOL!

Hey Cafe - I don't know any good 2-in-1s. But I can recommend a good leave in that helps detangle. It is the Qhemet Biologics Olive Cream Conditioner and Detangler. It actually feels like a moisturizer but it does a great job to help detangle when I don't have time for a conditioner. You just smooth it in comb out the kinks. It's even helping me during my transition from relaxed to natural, which you know gets really tangled when wet.

Is anyone wearing a wig to help manage their gym hair? I just bought a great natural looking wig that I am now using after my workouts. Now I can go in the gym, sweat as much as I need to, rinse my hair, pop on my little friend and go about my day. I put on plenty of moisturizer and a conditioner cap underneath. I feel so liberated, plus my hair condition will improve when I work out, not get all ragged.

Yes! This works especially well for the cooler months.

I don't complain. I exercise daily and co-wash daily. If people don't like my wet bun they can give me money to get it done professionally.

I honestly don't care about sweat, bacteria, whatever. In fact, I exercise just to have an excuse to wash my hair.

I HATE when black women don't want to exercise because of their hair. That is sick-- no wonder so many of us are overweight.

I was at a resort about a month ago with my "adopted" hispanic family. Can you believe they thought black women don't swim because "their hair will get messed up and turn into an afro." They even told me after I got out of the pool, "Look, your hair is puffing up!" Who the heck cares!

We saw four black couples who were together, and one black woman refused to get in the water because her weave would have got wet. Why are you sacrificing fun, enjoyment, and pleasure at a resort just because you have two-toned weave?

We really need to teach women that water is our hair's best friend. You are not going to melt if you get water on your hair. Once they learn that, maybe they'll start exercising. What's the point of having perfect hair if you weigh three hundred lbs and have diabetes?

sorry that was a random rambling.

Lol, so true, so true.
Best thing you can do is work yourself up in a sweat... coat your hair in conditioner or pre poo...and chill in the sauna... :lick:

And my SO first asked me if I was afraid of "water or swimming". My thing is, if I have to fear basic needs for hairstyles, I don't need them!

There's always a way around it... or to deal with it.

Girls I feel you. I workout almost daily. I wear a full head weave with some hair left out. The small amount I leave out, I have to deal with every day. I have to wash this hair and condition more frequently, I cannot think about not washing my whole head after 3 to 4 days. Of course the weave is easy post wash and conditioning( I use disgustinly expensive hair -for the price I pay for it -it should wash itself.) but my hair after quick conditioning i use my caruso rollers or if time allows my regular rollers and blow dry to the roots. I try to stay away from super striaght styles, so if need be I can let my hair lay down with a little bit of surge Moisterizer creme. Thats been a life saver. I am very worried once I take out my weave for good. I hope bunning will work.

OMG Im so excited about this thread!!!! Cicilypayne, I teach aerobics everyday and I wear a sew-in and I need you or someone with a similar situation to please share with me how you maintain the weave in more detail! Like what's your removal technique to avoid matting when you wash so often while wearing the weave. What moisturizer do you use daily for your hair under the weave that doesn't create a lot of build? Is it more drying to leave the salt and sweat til the end of the week to do a wash, or is washing daily more drying. I am having such a hard time keeping my hair moisturized :cry3: I really need someone who has figured it out to help me and my sweaty weave before I loose my mind:whyme: Its not stinky now cause I wash so often but that is causing a lot of dryness and matting due to build up for me when it comes time to take it out (a 9 hour mission:nono:) :help: Girls you gotta help a sista out cause I'd hate to loose my 24" waist just to have waist length hair!
