I am with wadadligyal....Im nearing 30 when the metabolism becomes very unfriendly.
Im not afraid of water...its what to do with my hair after the water.
If I had a stylist to deal with after each wash, what...bring it on.
My air dryed hair takes almost 48 hours to dry so I would AlWAYS have wet hair.
Any suggestions as to how to get it dry any quicker?
My hair is BSL and its plentiful so I have no idea what to do.

I want long healthy hair but I also want a healthy body also. I'm nearing 30 so gotta keep my figure :lachen: :lachen: :lachen:

I go swimming, to water parks. I'm not scared of water. Plus I'm an island girl I got the beach in my backyard growing up so I've never let that get in the way of my hair. Since joining this forum a few months ago I've learned about cowashes and learned how to better take care of my hair but my lifestyle ahsn't changed. Gotta get my workout on and getting myhair wet ain't nothing but a thing

Don't be scared water is our friend ladies. I just slap on a bit of conditioner beofre going to the gym or pool and my hair is fine.

I'm so glad you posted this!!! =) I'm starting to add swimming to my workout routine as a switch in my cardio (my BF swims like a fish, he's a certified rescue swimmer so I have to get on the ball!) :look:

I was wondering what to do about my hair, I bought a swim cap but k know that won't keep all the water out. I have some Swimmer's Poo and Conditioner. What type of conditioner do you use on your hair prior to getting in the water?

TIA!!

OT: Thanks ladies for the compliments! I'll rock a bun for my hair but Moo Moo dresses are outta the question!

My workourk regimen is part of the reason I chose to go natural. I just make sure I rinse my hair after a super strenuous work out.

Great post Plenty! Our bodies are just as important as our hair, if not more. I'll be getting my walk in today...because of you:kiss:.

Like a lot of the other ladies, I work out 5 times a week, conditioner wash after each workout, and wear my hair in a bun. I shampoo and deep condition once a week. I take two days off from working out a week so those are the days I may choose to wear my hair straight. My hair has grown to brastrap length using this regimen so water must be my hair's friend. (I heard otherwise when I first started doing this. Now they don't say nuthin.)

what about the tension of having a bun or ponytail every day? do you get any breakage??

I work out 3-4 days/wk and CW about 3 days a week. I wear my hair in a bun or braidout most of the time.

I'm on "injured reserve" right now but i wear a wig all the time w/hair plaited underneath. Works like a charm. Either that or I'd just wear hair pulled b ack in a bun or ponytail.

VWVixxen

Your body looks wonderful. Motivation for me to hit the gym.

I wear my hair natural. Working out and having nice hair is not hard for me. Usually I wet it up in the shower to pop out my curls after a workout. Frequent Conditioner washes are important so the salt and sweat don't cause your hair to break off. I usually wear twists in my hair to maintain the lengh. This week I worked out 5 days and my hair was feeling yucky. I had to wash it out.

I just use the conditioner I use for cowashes VO5 extra body or tea therapy and I make sure I do cowash as soon as I get home. Also I leave the conditioner in my haed and put on a plastic cap while i wash my skin then rinse out afterwards.

If you don't want to do a wet bun try some hair sticks that way you have that look of a bun without the tension. If you want it a bit flatter tie a satin scarf for a few minutes and you are good to go.

I guess I'm comfortable with my hair not being smooth and straight all the time so I've gotten accustomed. Also If I have to go out at night and my hair is stilll wet instead of doing a bun I have the cutest wig that looks exactly llike my hair looks after a curly rollerset so I rock that also.

I figure when my hair reaches apl or bsl it would look better doing a wash and wear but for now I just do a wet bun or hair sticks or rock my wig

i love this thread - i workout like a maniac - 2 times per day now for a total of 2.5 hours per day of excercise where i am sweating profusely - so i have to wet my hair to rinse daily. i cannot even think of straightemimg it because the sweat wopuld make it curl up...i want it alot longer so that when i let it airdry and wear it natural it does not shrink up to my ears....

This is me too..I workout up to 5 times a week...Aint no way I can flat iron my hair straight and keep it that way for more than a couple days MAX because of sweating at the gym. I am on a personal wash/rinse and bun challenge right now....

Now that I have been washing or rinsing or at minimum wetting my hair (mix of distilled water, Giovanni Leave in and peppermint oil) almost daily, I almost feel weird (not to mention my scalp) when I don't do it... I dont know how I used go a week doing the same thing and not wash my hair before....

I am closer to 40 than 30   and have found that consistant workouts are required! After I had my twins (born after 30) my hair fell out due to hormones. I began working out to lose the baby weight and found that it really helped my hair grow. I'm sure you all know that - exercise is good for your body and hair.

I workout 3-5 time a week and have stopped worrying about the 'fro. I workout, co-wash and air dry. I use flatout to help it dry straight and then were a blow-fro or rock a ponytail. I wash once a week with a clarifying shampoo, deep condition and start all over. Natural styles are in for women of color and others who try to match the look.

I work for a company that makes metabolic syndrome medications (prescription) - our target population is the obese patient headed towards type II diabetes or who already has type II diabetes (usually caused by lifestyle). Workout ladies, I've seen the stats - do yo' thang, don't worry about the hair and beat the odds, exercise is essential to a good quality of life.

This is the reason why I started researching hair care in the first place- great thread! I'm an aerobics instructor so I teach 5 classes a week along with my own fitness routines. I'm 4ab relaxed, so I can't co-wash everyday because it leaves my hair mushy and I don't have the time to counterbalance it with the necessary protein after each workout. And forget about rollersetting everyday.
When I get home I take a hot wash cloth and work it through my hair and rub my scalp several times. Then i use a mixture of s-curl with water (scalp) and ntm mixed with rusk on my hair. I then use mango butter or ors on the ends and seal everything with jojoba. I then leave my hair in the damp bun until it's time to take it down and moisterize for bedtime and then mohawk. I do this for 2 days in a row, co-wash on the third day and then shampoo and deep condition at the end of the week. This has worked for me for some time and my hair doesn't smell or itch which was a big problem before I found the boards. I mean, once I read a black magazine article on hair that stated if you wanted to work out, you'd just have to find a short hair cut that would accomodate your exercise routines. That's when I hit the internet. I figured there had to be a better way, and there was! So ladies, please don't be afraid to get up and move it! Do I look cute everyday? No. But when it's time to really clean up for something special, all of the effort with the hair and the working out really pays off:)

Wow this thread has been exactly what I've been trying to figure out to do, since beginning a new workout routine at the start of the year. I got a relaxer in April, and at the moment my hair is just ridiculously thick. When I go to workout I worry about my hair so much, that I dont focus on what I'm actually suppose to be doing; which in return makes me feel like I'm not doing much of anything when I am at the gym.

So what are the favorite products for the sisters wetting thier hair everyday to maintain balance of moisture and not overcondition? which conditioners do you use for the daily washes? which products do you use afterwards??
What's the point of having perfect hair if you weigh three hundred lbs and have diabetes?

sorry that was a random rambling.
I understand what you're saying, but I'm tellin you that if I ever weigh 300 lbs my hair is going to be lookin fierce:D

But seriously tho I do not use hair as an excuse not to exercise (I have too many other excuses) because 1)my scalp does not sweat alot 2) I don't mind wearing protective styles and 3) I am not afraid to get my hair wet

But if anybody is using hair as an excuse they better look at:
Macherieamor whose hair always looks lovely and she works out, VWVixxen who sticks to her hair regimen and her body is slammin' and CandyC whose hair is growing by leaps and bounds and looks so healthy and you can tell she works out. There are lots of others but those are the few that came to mind:)

Okay Ladies,
Im going to through my thread here....

I am a fitness trainer and run my own small family gym. I get up at 5:00 in the morning just to molest my machines. (HA HA) I love them. And I get mad if I am not able to do a good 3 hours a day. Splitting up my body for resistance training, cardio and strecthing. I think I am Exerexic.
Anyway, As a natural I constantly using the CO method. I love Regis Hydrating Balm and the newly found Herbal Essence conditioner for curly hair. This stuff is wonderful.
I normally end with 20 minutes usage of Dabur Vatika Hair oil. Recently I started wearing a wig just for a change. I would normally braid the front of my hair in two conrows and pull the rest back. I use a mixture of Emu oil, olive oil, water, and a small amount of conditioner in my hair to keep it moisturize. Unfortunately my hair is wearing thin in the edges where I sit my wig. Any solutions to a product that will help thicken them up again? I do massage with Emu oil through hair as that has really help maintain my edges to begin with. But I thought I may try Surge.
Any suggestions?

Robbing thread for second ........Have to give a shout out to VWVixen....I am envying the muscles. I only come in at 102 (lean muscle mass) looking like Jada Pinkett Smith. Pump it up girl!!!!!!

the best thing would be to conditioner wash after every workout with a cholesterol conditioner, shampoo every 5-7 days and clarify every 3-5 weeks

This is what I do! I'm natural so going straight isn't an option. When I do go straight I take a break from the gym.

I don't complain. I exercise daily and co-wash daily. If people don't like my wet bun they can give me money to get it done professionally.

I honestly don't care about sweat, bacteria, whatever. In fact, I exercise just to have an excuse to wash my hair.

I HATE when black women don't want to exercise because of their hair. That is sick-- no wonder so many of us are overweight.

I was at a resort about a month ago with my "adopted" hispanic family. Can you believe they thought black women don't swim because "their hair will get messed up and turn into an afro." They even told me after I got out of the pool, "Look, your hair is puffing up!" Who the heck cares!

We saw four black couples who were together, and one black woman refused to get in the water because her weave would have got wet. Why are you sacrificing fun, enjoyment, and pleasure at a resort just because you have two-toned weave?

We really need to teach women that water is our hair's best friend. You are not going to melt if you get water on your hair. Once they learn that, maybe they'll start exercising. What's the point of having perfect hair if you weigh three hundred lbs and have diabetes?

sorry that was a random rambling.

I agree.

Right now I have braids, so when I excersize it's easy to rinse my hair and let it air dry. I really need to go to the track today!

I am a little concerned about what I'm going to do when I start weaving (I'm leaving a little of my hair out). I'm sure I'll figure it out. I'm not going to let that stop me from getting my workout on!

Great thread. I think it depends on what type of exercise you do. I exercise 5 times a week but I dont normally do that much cardio, just pilates and light weights/abs which means I dont sweat that much. I just pin curl my hair and leave on my hair net and its fine afterwards.

I work out 2-3x a week. I just rinse the sweat out, slather on Motions, wash my body. Then I comb out and rinse in the shower. Apply a combo of Paul Mitchell the Conditoner and GPB to wet hair. Seal w/ oil, and put in 1 braid. A lil Elasta QP Glaze for my edges and cover w/ a scarf. In the morning I put in a wavy lil bun and keep pushing.

Awesome thread. I've been trying to figure out what to do with my hair when I exercise. Every stylist that I've questioned states that I should only be washing my hair once a week no matter how much I work out. I can't wash my hair everyday either cause it gets mushy. I'm gonna try to work out 3 days in a row and wash my hair at the end of the 3 days and take a 3 day break like someone posted earlier. Thanks for posting that.

I'll be 30 on the 3rd of July and my metabolism has definitely slowed down. I'm putting weight at the hips, belly and butt. The hips and butt I'm fine with cause I always thought myself lacking in that area but the belly has got to go.

Are you ladies finding that your hair is growing faster and thicker as a result of the workouts? I have heard this happens. bonjour

I workout 5 days a week (Monday thru Friday). On those days I just do a CO Wash or rinse + leave in and wet bun. I run so the CO wash is necessary especially in the summer. The wet bun is not the greatest look but I have no one to impress during the week anyway. It's work -> gym -> home.

On the weekends (when it really matters for me anyway) I wear my hair out.
If I do happen to go out mid week I will skip the cardio/run for the day and just double up on weights/yoga/stretching/abs. I don't sweat much doing those.

Anky- Preach girl. When I was relaxed I stopped caring about having perfect hair. I was overweight and needed to work out. I am natural and I feel so free. I love water.

Just wanted to chime in and say that I am soooo happy someone has started this topic Although I am just a workout newbie, I will be doing a mini trianthalon next year so this hair advise is just what I needed!
