With the high visibility of greek life in the black community, she should have known that using the word sorority would imply certain things (no, I am not in a sorority but I also do not live under a rock). And lo and behold, she intends for it to be an actual sorority. Giving passes about how "words can mean different things to different people" is obviously something people use when it benefits their argument only, so I would expect nothing less on the innanets. There are a few other instances in the "natural hair community" when people have brought out the lynch mob, which NO ONE is doing in this thread and the issue could have been dismissed in the same manner. I'm just saying, I think that some people are showing themselves right now and aren't being consistent because they are ya-ya about the natural hair sisterhood. Which is fine, but it's also uber obvi. Either "they should have known better" or we're going to leave it open to our own interpretations. Be consistent, please.

And of course she can have her sorority, and no it's not a big deal. People were asked how they felt, and they responded. No one said they were going to boycott the po' chile.

Just a few questions...

Do you become a "life member" after a certain period of natural-ness?
Are men who have locs/braids allowed to join...or are they "sweethearts"
Will national headquarters revoke your membership if you relax or long term transition?
What will their call/hand sign be?

In all seriousness... **** it...I can't take this seriously. Those of us who are Greek AND know the foundation of our organizations can identify the nonsense in the use of the term sorority. Heck...even some non-Greeks can see the foolishness.

Most sororities/ fraternities are based on core values. Despite what people see in movies/tv... there is a purpose beyond friendship, parties, and physical appearance. For that reason...I think that them using the term "sorority" is a joke. Not offensive at all...just comical:lol:
 
No one is trying to bring out the lynch mob or get mad, it's just that once you know what it's like to be in a sorority it makes you wonder why Sunshine decided to go through the process of putting a natural hair sorority in the works. Not because it can't or shouldn't be done, but because of the fact that it's being focused on a factor that could be changed at the drop of a dime.

That aside I am no stranger to the process and ridicule a newly formed greek organization receives from outsiders (my boyfriend went through the process of getting a new greek social fellowship started at my alma mater this year).

To me, it seems like if they were to establish they would receive law suits out the wazoo just for the fact that their a natural hair sorority. There's too much gray area for law suit happy happy people to nip at.

you know people say that if you overuse words they lose their power and importance?

like if you call everything awesome. full of awe. not everything is awesome, that's a complete overstatement.

i think....some members of certain organizations would feel "tainted" if EVERYONE could be in a sorority (of any kind) tbh.

but whatever.

i got the email and dismissed it.
 
I always get confused in these threads. Everyone is sharing their thoughts & opinions and I'm not sure why it needs to be restated so many times. Just because everyone does not agree doesn't mean folks are mad or upset.
 
I probably wouldn't join, I refuse to be defined by natural hair or my BGLO Sorority.

I DO believe in meeting people where they are--so if this is what compels you to do service in your community, go for it! No hate here.
 
I didn't log in but like someone else said from the bit of info I read I would think it's similar to being on here.

(At above bolded)I'm Greek and .....well you can't compare the two at all. A sorority based on the superficiality of the state of one's hair. Not education or community goals, or morals and values. C'mon son!

Nope. The concept is just another reason for people to exclude others because of vanity reasons. We have enough issues already between the natural hair community :nono:
 
ok this is waaaay extra and uncalled for.and wouldnt this cause for even more seperation/division between us?creating a sorority based on hair is just plain old ridiculous to me i would not be able to take a sorority like tht seriously

Could not agree more. I understand support/encouragement for things/people that are often in the minority, but I think lots of things regarding natural hair are becoming/already excessive.

These are my thoughts. IMO natural hair is all about acceptance and inclusion. The word "sorority" implies "exclusivity" and therefore rejection. It also just "smacks" of "blacker than thou" which gets the big :rolleyes: from me.
 
I would just join a traditional sorority/ one of the divine 9. I would however join a natural hair club or something that is not really as big of a deal though.

ETA: No shade towards natural sunshine though...

Well I'm an (inactive) member of Natural Sunshine and I'm relaxed... :/ ...I'm not offended by this at all...

I think that a lot of people are putting too much on the word "sorority". It's not like she wants to become a black, greek letter organization and become part of the NPHC, etc, etc. In its purest form, a sorority is a group of women with a bond of sisterhood. Sorority does not equal greek. Calm down.

Regarding the community aspect that many are concerned about, Sunshine is trying to launch a Natural Hair Acceptance MOVEMENT. Meaning she is trying to spread the word to the international black community that its OK to wear your hair natural.

Idk, just my feelings on it...

That's the very definition of a sorority. I went to an HBCU and the "Divine 9" were the absolute most divisive organizations on campus. So... nothing new here to see!

There's negatives in "real" sororities I'm sure. They may have certain objectives, but it can't be denied that they are exclusive. You have to pledge and fit into certain molds and if you don't fit the criteria, you don't make it. Don't you have to pay fees to be a member of some sororities? Aesthetics are a part of that system as well.

Not everything is copesthetic. Just sayin
