I'm a tangler and have seen this brush referenced in a few threads. Is this a good buy or leave on the shelf?

If it's a good buy, which brush is best for semi long hair detangling?

thx

I really liked mine but the shrinkage was crazy! Plus, I got similar results using a normal comb (not wide tooth or fine tooth but in between). I don't spend too much time detangling so I just end up finger combing all the time. Maybe when my hair gets longer I'll revisit it.

I really tried to love my Denman, but it was ripping out too much of my fragile, fine strands.

I tried it for detangling and it's not on my first line of defense. I used the wide tooth comb then the denman....then a fine tooth comb on the knots and a whole lot of 20/80 Conditioner/Water mix.

For me it's good for styling and smoothing the hair for roller sets and twist/braid sets but not for detangling. It just rips my hair. I only use it after I've fully detangled.

Same here except I use mane n tail detangler

My Denman has transformed the way I detangle during my long-term transition. But my new growth definitely responds better than my relaxed ends

I agree with everybody. I find it amazing when my hair is completely detangled, moisturized and lubricated, but still using it very gently: it can give your curls a shape you wouldn't achieve with other tools.
Every time I have detangled with it it has broken my hair and I realized about it only when my hair was 100% dry.

I do not use the denman for detangling because it rips my hair out. I use a wide-tooth comb instead and my denman is great for smoothing my edges or if I'm shingling my hair thats it.

I use my Denman after detangling with a wide tooth comb to make sure I get shed hairs out. I love that thing. It gives me really defined curls too. I have a D41 from Sally's. Are you relaxed or natural?

I was duped. I hate it, for my hair the detangling is solved by ripping out my hair.

Yeah, I tried to love the Denman, but using it only resulted in lots of lost hair for me. I’d like to know how everyone is using it and keeping hair on your heads and not in the brush.

When using it is your hair wet, dry, semi-wet…ect. and natural or relaxed?

I love my Denman, it detangles easily and encourages my curls to clump and twirl
I have 3c 4a hair, i use it when my hair is saturated with water and conditioner in the shower, i use it after the shower on 75% wet hair with product and section brush the detangled hair smoothing and flipping at the ends. i get uniformed clumped curls with lots of defintion and even product distrbution.

I’m with Keshieshimmer on this one. I’ve tried the Denman brushes and it only resulted in lots of lost hair for me. I’d like to know how everyone is using it and keeping hair on your heads and not in the brush.

I would also like to say that I am transitioning so I still have relaxed ends. I usually use it on towel dried hair with some sort of lubricant. Now I only use it to help my edges.

I use my denman after detangling and I love it. I motified it by taking out every other row and it works 10 times better.

This was a waste of money for me. I gave it to my son. When I try to detangle with this, it completely rips my hair out. I used it once. Never again, any brush I use that I can hear my hair snapping is a no-no.

I love both of my Denman brushes. I have found that I cannot start at the scalp when detangling, which I was guilty of, and my hair had to be wet. I've heard that curly girls shouldn't comb our hair while dry or comb while wet. But I think when it's wet I just can't go in full force and start brushing, you still have to be gentle since hair is most fragile in it's wet state. Ladies that still have their Denman should give it another chance, it might've been your technique in brushing. When I slowed down and started from tip to root, there was maybe 1 or 2 strands or none.

For me, I lose a very consistant amount of hair weekly ( I have a pic in my fotki)

I detangle on hair loaded with conditioner and water and start detangling at the tip and work my way to the roots, if I find some resistance because of a tangle I gently brush through it starting at the bottom of the tangle and working through it. :yep:

Adding water to the section usually adds slip. My hair is at it's most pliable when wet so tangles are easiest to remove in this state.

I could go back to using a wide tooth comb as I think it's gentler but I could never figure out how to get out the shed hair which led to worse tangles and knots.

I guess I should have specified -- I'm relaxed so it seems this brush is for more natural hair...correct?

I think naturals love it so much more than us relaxed heads do. Mine hated me too!!
I'm starting to get that impression.

I think you either LOVE this brush or absolutely HATE it. I love it - I can't be nappyheaded and ever expect to have a decent ponytail or truly detangled hair without it. I say buy it and keep the receipt. If you don't like it take it back.

As my hair grew longer, I found the Denman (I had the knockoff) was ripping my hair out. I tried and tried to make it work, but it was a no-go. Now, I detangle with a wide tooth comb.

I just recently bought a new Denman (the real kind lol) and it's still sitting in the box after buying it a month ago. I dunno..guess I'm kinda nervous. Anywho, I plan on using the Denman now only after I've properly detangled with my wide tooth comb. I rarely do wash n go's so I may use it to help clump my curlies too.

i love my denman... i use it to distribute the oils in my hair after i oil it....and i use it to smooth my hair when i wrap it......i also have less dandruff on my scalp now that i use it.....

I just purchase the denman and it works great for me. I am newly natural as of yesterday. But it worked on my transtion hair. I use it whenmy hair is wet and has conditioner in it I start at the ends and work up to the root. I am able to brush my entire head with it. I only lose a few strands.

I hated that thing it was a good thing I proceeded with caution when I first tried it felt as if it was going to rip my hair out. I now use and love the goody detangling brush which does a good job of detangling and getting out shed hairs. The bristles of the goody brush are flexible which makes it more gentle.
