Well, I've never had shedding issues, so I don't know about that one.

But, I used to have thin, overprocessed, see-through ends when I relaxed my hair bone-straight...texlaxing cured that. :yep:

There is an active thread about shedding including a detailed post regarding what supplements should be taken to block dht related shedding. I can't post the link right now but search for Saw Palmetto.

Good thread! I just went from BSL to APL bc of major shedding :(

Oh well, I believe mine is hormonal- hypothyroidism specifically. I've been having quite a few issues lately. As soon as I can get some blood work done at a low cost clinic, I hope to come up with a solution.

In the meantime- back to alter ego

did the alter ego work well for you? i've better results with the nutrine garlic shampoo...and black tea rinse

working on determining my source tho'

I know that garlic taken orally is good for shedding, but today i bought some garlic oil capsules - word to the wise, buy the odourless type, because that stuff is repeating on me and it is NOT pleasant :nono:!!!!

okay this is a stupid questions but you an only increase the thinkness of new hair right? or can you increase the thinkness of strands lets say mid way down the lentgh of your hair? ive been applying caster oil to my temples and noticed thicker new growth but nothing for the hair that was already on my head. does that make sense or did i just confuse everyone else too?

increasing THICKNESS:

in my "limited experience" Bim, you are 90% correct (maybe someone with more knowledge on this will lend a hand later:look:). Only this is what has worked for me. Increasing new growth by using things like oral supplements (only one I can think of is biotin & horsetail<--- think that was the vitamin?) the other think as u mentioned is castor oil

I've have read some ladies speaking of using castor oil on the LENGTH of their hair "to increase thickness" with hot oil treatments.... deep conditioning treatments....etc.
I've also read that black tea rinses may increase the thickness of the length of the hair (or at least gives the appearance that it's thicker)

appearance of thicker hair: I do know their are tons of "thickening shampoos & conditioners" & henna that claim to thicken hair ....but I made this thread b/c i'm also trying to find out:grin:

I don't usually suffer from extreme shedding. But when I do, I know it's from stress.
Once the semester ends, it stops. lol.

IF HENNA makes one's hair thicker....i'm looking for henna next
my black tea rinses are helping... but i don't know why i'm still shedding even a little (more than normal)
perhaps my diet..... i can't be a long thin haired natural

I use to shed bad. I believe the cause was from only using protein. I was still a newbie with natural hair. I used cantu shampoo and leave in and then bb mayonaise and honey for moisture. DUMBEST THING I COULD HAVE DONE.
I had it again this year because of the denman. So it took a little babying with protein and moisture balancing.
As for thickness, I understand most of us believe grease is bad but when I used dax lanolin I had growth and thickness. I've always had thick hair until around my third year of being natural I noticed a thinner texture especially in my crown. I think it's from scractching to hard and using selsun blue consistently without following with a moisturizing shampoo. So now I stay away from sls mostly and drugstore anti dandruff brands. Also I think ketaconozole caused a lot of it which is odd because it has the opposite effect in men. Anyway I do want my thickness back and I hope and pray to regain it.

is the black tea for thickness or reduction of shedding?

THE BLACK TEA IS "FOR SHEDDING" however, i read somewhere that it thickens or gives the appearance of thicker strands! i read so much on hair (via net) i rarely remember where

it may have been on tracyee's blog

wherever....it read "thickens the strands, reduces shedding, as well as darkens the hair"

maybe my shedding is from scratching & frequent manipulation
i actually have the most itchy scalp ever known to man.... so i cowash daily
(sometimes twice)
i gotta win the battle on thicker hair....determined

Black Tea rinses :yep:

I've been falling off lately and I'll be darned... but I do see more hair in the comb!

I'm gonna stop being lazy and start doing them again :)

Moni at Home 254.jpg this is after a few months of regular henna's.

Moni at Home 336.jpg

Moni at Home 337.jpg] This pic and the second one are from a few months w/ little to no henna. (recent months)

My siggy is also from my reg. henna usage days. I plan on going back to reg. use. It's so hard though to find henna plus (i only used one box of this but i wish i would've bought every box on the shelf that day +) But for the most part i just used ancient formula w/ skikakai, henna and amla pwdrs. I would add extra amla or some other easy to get powder in too. My usually fine, flyaway, and barely there "feeling" hair had among other things weight & shine.

thank you so much for the add sis!!!

exactly how do you mix your powders & with what ingredients? amounts?:drunk:

No problem. I make many different ones to be honest. But i get very good results from adding yogurt, honey, oils (coconut "vatika or org. unref."), amla, anything really, e.o's, whateva. Left over conditioners any kind and i go for a pastey consistency OR as creamy as i can get (in order to rinse out well, oil really helps here too). Oh and water.Whenever it looks gritty i add whatever will get it creamy again.

ETA: When i use henna and other powders my hair can no longer use a flimsy hair tie... I need thicker heavy duty hair ties.

alter ego garlic conditioner really helps to decrease shedding. I used the nutrine garlic shampoo and that helps as well.

Not sure how to increase thickness, read that biotin supplements help with that.. My shedding was do to hormonal imbalance also but mostly very low iron. I had blood work done and was diagnosed with very low iron. My hair which was nearly BSL was shedding over a period of time and the ends became see-thru and that is when I noticed that the shedding wasn't normal. I went from nearly BSL to APL to SL and I finally cut my hair or did the big chop as you ladies say here this past March.. Currently taking iron supplements daily to increase iron ferritin level.
