BKT and Thickness

I never had an issue with thinning with the bkt. It made my hair less bulky yes, but thin no. i didnt use high heat nor did i do many passes. My favorite was ok original keratin. My hair never felt stronger after a bkt except for when i used the nunaat keratin reconstructor.it didnt feel weaker either. It just felt silky and was easy to manage. If i was to bkt in the future with relaxed hair i personally would only do the roots. I also never experienced my roots looking different from the ends. My hair ALWAYS reverted FULLY.

I have been getting lots of requests for more information about why I no longer use BKT so here it goes.

Most of my clients would get the service done about every 6 or 9 months. Some hair laughed at the BKT and it didn't change anything. Some people's hair went straight almost immediately. I was customizing swipes and only using 3 or 4 on some clients depending on their hair. I started doing no more than 7 swipes all together. It's just too much heat.

I noticed that over time the hair did start to thin and it didn't make the hair any more healthy than traditional methods like shampooing and deep conditioning. Even if a client would wait a long period of time in between treatments, the section that was already treated would get straighter even though it appeared to be completely reverted. I started suggesting to client to get BKT touchups only.

Eventually the BKT'ed ends would not respond the same as the rest of the hair and I no longer saw any benefit to doing the service. In addition to that I tired of breathing the fumes. It's just not worth it to me.

Thank you DSD! Did you cut off the ends of your clients hair when the BKT'ed ends would no longer respond the same as the rest of the hair. I have found that this is an issue with my BKT'ed hair and I am wondering if there is anything that can be done or if the ends just need to be cut off immediately and start over. Thank you for your help. Much appreciated.

Interesting to see the different experiences, much like relaxers. I generally bkt once/yr or so. With the exception of my hair acting rebellious right now (can't say if bkt is/isn't the culprit), I haven't had any issues with thin or wispy hair. To answer BostonMaria's question (sister in shrinkage), it helps a bit, but not much. I bkt when I want straight hair without reversion in 60 seconds. My hair always curls amd I've had no trouble with the product not wearing off. I use G lobal.

I gradually trimmed them off. Good Luck!!

DSD were u using it on relaxed heads or naturals? Also- were they using heat frequently between touch ups? If a relaxed or natural client over uses heat---which a lot of people do for some reason when they BkT----you will get thinning/Heat Damage. If your heat process during the BKT is the only heat their hair gets in a year and its thinning then thats different...but if after the BKT they are using heat--even if only once a week----24 times in 6 mos---36 times in 9 mos, then thats not the BKT....JMHO....now the fumes---thats something else...or go formaldehyde-free!

Hey Eisani how are you? :drunk:
How many BKT's have you done so far?

On naturals. I can't speak for heat usage of my clients but it appeared that they were only using heat at bi-weekly salon visits. On my daughter's hair I only used heat twice a month or less.

I put a Salerm BKT in my niece's hair. It said that it didn't have formaldehyde and I don't know why we actually believed it. I didn't open any windows because it didn't smell bad. By the time I was done I was coughing and hacking. When her hair was done I had to go straight home and go to bed. I coughed all night and was sick for about 2 days. I can't believe this stuff is so strong. Not only that, but Salerm's got a lot of nerve acting like it doesn't have formaldehyde knowing damn real its full of toxic ish.

I'm interested in BKT but I'm terrified to do it because of a few horror stories. Do you guys think it's the chemical or the heat that's causing the hair to thin?

Oh and the reason why I'm considering it is to see if it'll help with my shrinkage.

Please don't do it! I noticed my hair had changed and very thin after using it. I believe it is both chemical and heat combined.

Did you see a doctor? You should still get your lungs checked, even if this is months later just to make sure. About those with aldehyde, you still need to ventilate well because I heard that at some point, it form formaldehyde during the heating process. :nono: I also experienced thinning.

I was tagged.:look:

I have not noticed any thinning of my hair strands at all. However, I do not use BKT for straight hair. I only wear my hair straight right after the treatment and then I wear my hair curly after the first wash. My curls always revert. I have a video on my youtube page (link below) of the BKT treatment and another video of my hair after the first wash. I think BKT loosens my curl pattern, for a few months at least, but it has always reverted back to 4a.

I actually like that you towel-dried the hair. That could be a good step for people prone to experiencing dryness. I probably won't return to use it, tho. Btw, nice vid but that music was the absolute most awfullest I've done ever hurd! :lachen: It had me laughing.

This thread makes me sad... I can only speak for QOD Max but it has made it possible for me to be 2 yrs post after trying many times before. So sorry to hear of the bad experiences :(

The new treatment at Sally's is a smoothing treatment made for ethnic hair called Silk Elements Kera-Minerals you only have to use one pass.

I have been doing BKT on my for a year. I have more thickness then when i was relaxed. I'm extremely happy with the results..no intention of stopping.

I also want to point out that i take full precaution when applying bkt. I have my fume extractor I wear gloves and a regular mask. Im sory to hear so many of you had bad experiences with BKT. In my case , BKT is the answer to my prayers.:yep:

Perhaps it's the brand? It appears that everyone (or most) who have not had a problem have good things to say about QOD

:ohwell:

WOW!!!!!

Thank you dontspeakdefeat - for being a responsible awesome stylist....

:nono::nono: Sad to hear about all this stuff.....I think it really was formulated for some groups - possibly - and could be too much for some.

I am glad to see that others are having no issues.... that is good - but - I will never do any chems on my hair... Not worth it.

:sad::sad:

Good luck Everyone. I feel like this is a GREAT informative Post .....
Maybe it should be a Review Sticky!:look:

Hey dontspeakdefeat

curious to the types of bkt you used . It's good to file all of this in my mental rolodex. I don't plan on using it, but I love to "remember" information necessary in case someone I know needs it, etc. You never know

After getting Coppola BKT I could get my hair 95% straight by just pulling it back while it dried. I would just use my hot comb real quick before I went out and didn't have to hit EVERY inch. BKT allows me to use much less heat.

Just being real...:look: the BKT wrecked my hair, had to go into protective mode right after... i believe it was the QOD that did it ... ends still straight...oh well... lesson lived and learned...

Lexs, what brand did you use? Dream hair did me in and I will never BKT again.

Dream hair stopped my BKT run also. I was fine while I was using Global and QOD.

ETA: When I used Global and QOD with the high heat, it seemed to protect my hair and add thickness and weight to the strand. When I switched to Dream hair and used the same temp to process, my hair became whispy and light and then shortly afterwards the breakage began. In hind sight, Dreamhair was an awful product. I would recommend trying the BKT without the excessively high heat in general.

I recently used the Chi Keratin Treatment and I liked the results. I have thin/fine hair anyway. My hair was shedding alot before the treatment and it has slowed down alot. My curl pattern is looser, but it still curls or gets wavy. My hair is much softer and silkier than before and doesn't get frizzy either. I won't do another one until next year around the end of spring or beginning of summer.

i know this thread it old, but i haven't been on in a while and saw that i was tagged.

but yeah, i started noticing some breakage in the middle of my hair. not right away, cause it was easy to hide. i'm not gonna say it was the bkt though, 'cause it could've been all the heat that was used, or the blow dry process that i sucked at.

the reason i stopped though was because it just took too dang long to do.
